I love this place. It was my friend's birthday and after getting a Lyft from Prizefighter (which is awesome btw) in Emeryville and ate a hotdog at top dog, we decided to continue drinking at TapHaus since it was right there. I guess they JUST opened because the place was relatively new. I DIG THE ATMOSPHERE and I love that wooden decor. They have big long tables, shuffleboard, etc. It was pretty empty when I was there, but I think because they're new they weren't packed yet. Good beers, and they have DAS BOOTEN! My friend bought us all a round of boots, and got the birthday boy a HUGE boot, which was awesome. They also have board games there and those tables are perfect for it. I like that they have various games. However we were kicked out before closing time. According to their website it is open until 2am. They supposedly were being nice and letting us finish our game after it was 1:30! It was about 1:40 and they insisted on us having only 2 more minutes! I wanted to finish my game. And if I am paying to finish my game I deserve to have my full time. I'm not one of those entitled people, I currently working in a restaurant/customer setting I know what it is Iike to keep a customer happy! Horrible experience, I haven't felt this demeaned in so long. I Went with my wife to Tap Haus for a friend's birthday party. Of course as tradition has it, I decided to buy my friend a drink. So me and my girl walk up to the bar to get drinks, I'm a black man and my girl is white(for context). I waited a few minutes before realizing that I was being ignored as others had walked up to the bar while I waited, and they were served almost instantaneously. So, I asked my girl to try to get the drinks....she was almost immediately helped by a ginger/blondish bartender with glasses. My girl pointed to me ask me to order for us. As I ordered, the bartender immediately interrupted me and said "if you're ordering for more than just yourself than I need to see their IDs as well because if I see you giving anyone a drink than I'm putting you out!" First off this is a bar, why at 9pm isn't everyone being carded at the door, and secondly, to talk to a customer about putting them out before even inquiring about there day... not my idea of costumer service, but then things got worst.. she had me go across the bar to look for the birthday boy( I couldn't find him) so I brought another friend(white guy) WHO SHE NEVER EVEN CARDED... she gave us our drinks and I eventually found my friend and we started drinking. She charged at us , demanding to see his ID and telling me that she's have me put out by the bouncers .. this is after me paying $30.. I asked to speak to a manager which no one accommodated... POC, please avoid this bar if you are looking to have a carefree Saturday night. Customer service is shit , and I'm a bit suspicious about the bartender being racist(at minimal has shitty customer service) I will never return. read more

There's some cool games (giant jenga, giant connect four, pool, and shuffle board). I didn't drink anything this time, but there is an assortment of German and domestic beers served here. The inside is nicely decorated and has a nice theme to it. Really like the hanging lights. Let me be real. I usually have to be dragged by my friends to any type of bar/pub/place that serves alcohol. This place was not my cup of tea (real tea is!). It was a Friday night so it was understandably packed. But what got me was that it was unbearably hot and stuffy and the noise was giving me a headache. And the games I was so excited about were all taken. Overall, not a great place for introverted people like me or really for anyone looking to have a nice conversation with friends and drinks without having to scream. But I do see the merits of the place (nice interior, close to campus) and would probably come back on a quieter night to play around with a group of friends. read more

What's not to love about giant Jenga, Connect 4, and 6 pool tables?? This is a great place to unwind with a group of friends. I came on a Thursday night and lucky for us, it wasn't too crowded. We were able to play all of the games with minimal wait. I'm almost afraid to post this just so it remains my little gem! Of course , I felt extremely old here lol the price is decent of course for all the college kids! They don't have food here but i went next door and got some food to go to eat here . Okay, I have a positive update. I received a message from Tap Haus apologizing for our experience. Seems like they are working on some things and they took my review as constructive criticism. Now, THAT is awesome. I was also politely informed that there is no table service there, so it's not that we were being ignored. My fault for not knowing that. They will be making a sign to inform customers of this. Great idea. Looking forward to returning to the Tap Haus in the future to see how things are going. The bartenders gave excellent suggestions and knew their beer. There weren't that many people (probably because it's summer), so maybe that helped in terms of service. Overall, great and helpful. Food-wise: the bratwurst (Atomic) was great because I love spicy! Beer: They had a nice sour which was great and they had a good selection of German beers! This place needs some SERIOUS ventilation. Stopped by after the Cal/USC game and yes, I am aware we went to a bar on Halloween after a rivalry football game, but it was still gross. The floor was exceptionally sticky, actually, everything we touched was sticky. It smelled so stale and was extremely stuffy downstairs even though there were probably only about 50 people total in the entire place. Wasn't a fan of the old Tap Haus, but the new upstairs area is fantastic! The service is still slow, but they have expanded their range of beers and it is the only close alternative to Freehouse (or Bears Lair) if you want to sneak a quick beer in between classes at Haas. My first time at this place--I was pretty excited just because I've been into beers. I came last Friday night around 9pm. The upstairs bar wasn't busy. I only saw the female bartender working, so I waited as she helped a group of people who were before me. I tried to get close to where she was helping them, and sat at the bar. I get that she was busy, so I didn't expect her to greet me or anything. I sat at the bar and waited patiently... And get this--at this time it wasn't even busy. After she had helped the group, she did not look at me, nor gave me any eye contact or whatsoever. She went straight to the guy who had been sitting next to me and asked him if he wanted his glass refilled. I was pretty upset at that moment. The guy's glass was full when I got there, so why would you offer to serve him first before serving a new customer who has been waiting? And not only that--she did not even look at me. So I told the bartender that I've been waiting, and she did apologize and offered me a free beer. At that time I was already too upset to even enjoy my beer. Her apology does not excuse her from discriminating me. Anyways, other than that being my first impression about this place, I really enjoyed the vibe. The male bartenders were A LOT more friendlier and attentive, so thank you. They were awesome. I made sure I gave them extra tips because I respect bartenders who serve everybody equally. read more

The Bartenders are great - friendly, nice, and willing to strike up conversation. Pool is always a fun time here with friends when ordering a large boot of cider, or you could also treat yourself to a large game of giant Connect 4 or giant Jenga. There are two floors: the bottom is more old fashioned, while upstairs has the "Today's Hits Music" kind of vibe. The bottom floor is only open during peak times/days, while the top floor is always open. Drinks are relatively inexpensive, and affordable. During the summers, it would get very crowded with Irish people who are subletting around the area, and the school year is mostly college-aged students at UC Berkeley. It's also conveniently located next to the Karaoke place, which you could easily go to right after a drink or two at Tap Haus. read more

Went here on a Wednesday night with a few friends. The guy at the bar was really helpful and explained each of the German beers to us. I got the Stiegl Radler, which tasted like grapefruit juice and was delicious. My boyfriend got the Weihenstephaner, which was also great and probably will be my next pick. A stein was $8. Later the two of us shared a pretzel; well worth the 3.50 imo. It came with horseradish and mustard sauce. They have games! I first walked into taphaus to charge my phone. The place had a chill atmosphere and I dug the music. The pool tables are in great condition, which is rare for a bar. I decided to come back and the bartenders (joy and matt) remembered me as did other workers. They all made me feel at home and like a regular. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon at 5. It was empty but soon filled up w grad students and a diverse crowd. The bartender switched the tv to the Giants game for us and offered us a few beer tasters. Amazing service at the bar. German and domestic beers on tap. We ordered the herb truffle fries with garlic aioli, which was really flavorful- get it if you love herby shoe string fries. Happy hour was 5-6pm. The deal was a pint with a pig pop for $10. Pretty good considering that would run you $14 on the regular. I'll be back! read more

I had a very unfortunate experience here and I wasn't even in the bar. A group of friends and I were out front leaving the Karaoke bar next door. One of my friends was drinking straight from a bottle of Martinelli's Apple Cider (the nonalcoholic kind) because we didn't have cups. An employee of Tap Haus (who seemed like the bouncer but we were unsure), came up to my friend and demanded that she stop drinking out of the bottle as he thought it was alcohol. When she refused and told him that it was apple cider, he came over and ripped the bottle out of her hand and proceeded to dump the entire bottle into the drain before calling her a bi*** and causing a scene. She was obviously upset by this and argued with him, which then he proceeded to demand she get away from the bar and up the steps. When she refused, he grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her up the steps. Excuse me, but how is this okay? Had he taken a moment to read the label of the bottle and smell the contents he would have known that it was straight apple juice. Instead he insisted on having a power trip and causing a scene. read more

We didn't stay for long. The menu online does not match what is really offered. They really do not serve German food. I was told that they changed the kitchen and therefore do not have the same menu as online. It does not take that long to change the online menu. We walked a good distance to get to this place to eat German food and were highly disappointed to find that they served none anymore. It took forever for them to come and serve us.. sever bartenders were standing around and talking to each other and would look over at us but not come and ask if we wanted anything, so we decided to leave and go across the street. I've spent a lot of time at Tap Haus and love it! The upstairs and downstairs are connected now which makes the whole place feel cohesive, even a little upscale. The beer selection is great and reasonably priced for the area. The bartenders also help make the huge range of options a little more manageable. Terrific spot and it's only gonna get better. Oktoberfest was goin' down at their fun grand opening last night. Feels like a beer hall plucked right out of Germany- steins and boots of beer, brats, kraut and even an Oom-pah band was playing. Great beer selection, yummy German fare, beautiful wood and stone interiors, beefy community tables, lights strung across the ceiling, pool tables and friendly staff. The owner really knows how to create a special, inviting and fun space in all of his establishments (also owns Kona club, Club Mallard and former Thalassa).
