I was looking for something fun to do and came across TAP-a-holic and decided to give it a try. I had tap danced a bit as a kid but hadn't done it in AGES, so I was a little nervous the first time I showed up, but I absolutely didn't need to be. Everyone was super friendly and they have adult students of all levels and ages. The TAProbics classes are great workouts where the time just flies by, and the Broadway classes are great for perfecting technique. This was a fun work out and I really liked the studio. Bought a groupon for myself as did my two girlfriends. Hilary has good energy but the class times are pretty hard sometimes. Saturday at 11 or Monday night basically for the tap aerobics. I enjoyed it; you need no tap experience but need to be able to run around in tap shoes. Was a lot of fun; I would have considered continuing but there is a limit on packages if you buy them. Only good for three months or something; my schedule is too unpredictable. I really wanted this to work out for me. Hillary is a very pleasant teacher, and the other students I met were all extremely friendly. Also, it is hard to find Broadway style tap classes these days! So, if you are a tap beginner who wants to take a class for fun (and you have a lot of disposable income), you'll have a great time here! Unfortunately, she doesn't offer classes for more advanced students (and I understand the demand for these classes is low). When I tried a class, the highest level was a Level II class.... which I assumed would be an intermediate/advanced class (as it is at other studios), so I was very surprised to find myself in a beginner class, like at the tap level I functioned at when I was 8 years old! I I should also mention the classes are very expensive (even by LA standards), and Hillary has an extremely strict payment policy. Meaning, you have to pay for a month in advance so you may have to pay for classes you don't actually take. Still, if Hillary offered a high level class, I'd definitely deal with the high tuition to attend it! I considered taking private lessons from her as a solution to my dilemma, but they are just way out of my price range, alas. :-( read more

I am an avid tap dancer (I used to compete) and have had some trouble finding tap classes in the LA area. I finally found TAP-a-holic and was so happy I did! The TAProbics classes are a mix of aerobics and tap and are good for ALL LEVELS! I promise - I even took my mom to one! It's a follow-along class with basic steps that repeat several times throughout the song. And, like all aerobics classes, the more energy you put into it, the more you get out of it. Hillary will go over the steps before each dance for those that need it (or just as a refresher) and then you start tapping away. It's a great cardio workout - and different from anything I've ever taken. As for the Broadway style classes, I have the same issue as another commenter - the Level 2 class is a bit too easy for me and no Level 3 classes were offered. HOWEVER, the choreography that Hillary taught in the Level 2 class I took was so much fun! I would definitely recommend both classes, especially TAProbics. If you're a beginner-intermediate tapper, take the Broadway classes! - Hillary also has tap shoes for rent if you don't have your own. Some people even do it in sneakers (although that is a bit harder). - Every year (I think? Maybe twice/year) the Broadway students put on a show for the rest of the Tap-a-holics, performing the choreography they learned in class. - Evolution Dance Studios (where the classes are held) has really bad parking. There are three studios in the building and they all share a small lot of tandem parking. If you don't want to get interrupted in class to move your car, I suggest parking on the side streets if you can. read more

TAProbics is amazing. Anna makes the class so much fun you honestly don't realize you're getting exercise. I don't even mind doing the sit-ups and whatever at the end because the class has put me in such a great mood. I can't stand things like yoga because it's both hard and boring. This is like any standard aerobics class where there're a few different routines you're kind of just thrown into and hope you pick up... except it's tap dancing!! I'm learning to tap! I don't know if this would be a fun if you were an expert tap dancer, but I'm having a blast as a beginner. Best thing I could have spent money on. I started tapping at the age of 5 and kept it up until I turned 21. Life got in the way, I couldn't find another adult dance studio I like, and eventually... I just gave up. Luckily for me, I found a discount offer for TAP-a-holic classes through a corporate discount program and decided to jump on board. After a few weeks of attending Hilary's Level II classes, I can honestly say that I'm thrilled. I missed tapping so much, but was not at all interested in taking dance classes with a bunch of preteens. This is great environment. I want to start of disclosing I'm not a good dancer. When I was 6, my mom signed me up ballet classes and after a year it stopped coz she said she was wasting her money on me with my 2 left feet. My sisters went on until they got their point shoes and I dabbled with piano and other things instead. Suffice it to say, it did not stop me from copying people dancing on tv whenever I watch those old musicals like Annie and Singing in the Rain and even cartoons like Happy Feet... lol So, I was happy to find Tap-a-holic offered beginner classes. They sell tapshoes here, but I ended up renting first to see if I truly liked it. Hilary was pretty cool and she was easy to follow. I just learned the basic steps and it wasn't anything I imagined I would be doing. If you want to learn more, you have to keep attending more advanced classes, but I suppose the starter class did not make me want to pursue it further. Tap-a-holics is quite simply one of the best things that has ever happened to me. At the age of 39 I decided for no apparent reason that I wanted to learn to tap dance. I had never taken a dance class of any kind in my life and was seriously overweight and out of shape. I found Tap-a-holics and my life changed. Taprobics is perhaps the most entertaining way one can get a really sweaty workout in and have great fun. It is high energy and not intimidating even for the most basic level of beginners. All you have to do is move your feet and the energy of the room and the music take care of the rest. The more you come, the more fun you have. The Broadway classes are fantastic as well as people of all ages and skill levels (including me who had never taken a class before) can come in and learn technique while setting your moves to familiar music that makes it easier to remember choreography. Hillary Ayn Ryan, the owner and main teacher is fantastic. She is engaging and very supportive. When I told her that my goal was to learn the choreography to "Anything Goes" before my 40th birthday, she told me that she would make sure she planned a special workshop when I felt I was ready to help me hit my goal. Well, I did it, and while my skill level isn't quite "master level" yet, I absolutely felt empowered and accomplished that I could even attempt something like that in 8 short months. Summer Litwin teaches Taprobics once a week and some of the beginner classes and she is an absolute joy. I have never met someone who smiles so much (even when she is making us do flap circles - trust me, they are hell, but boy do they burn calories). In 8 months of going to Tap-a-holics 3x per week (Taprobics on Mon & Sat and Broadway on Wed), I managed to lose 35lbs and am at an "Advanced Beginner" level (Level 3). I have learned routines from Grease, The Wiz, Anything Goes, Chorus Line and more. I've been tap dancing for some time now, and recently found TAP-a-holic. I decided to try both kinds of classes offered since I couldn't decide between them. They have TAProbics and broadway-style classes, and I have to say, I loved both! TAProbics was so different from anything else I've done- its tap+aerobics, and so much fun because it is set to newer, popular music. The broadway class that I tried was the more advanced level, and more of a dance lesson. I did a four week session for that class, and I'm so glad I did. Hillary reviewed the choreography from the week before, and then added more each week, so I never felt lost, and I always left learning something new. read more

Here's what these classes are great for: a healthy, fun workout learning how to tap getting back into the swing of things if you used to tap improving your skills to an intermediate level Hilary and her crew are good teachers & create a supportive environment. They are skilled at what they do & I enjoyed the classes. BUT: If you are a professional performer who gigs out of town; this is not the situation for you. Dance class cards are not offered. The business is run by a "pay for the month" basis with make-up classes allowed during the current month of enrollment only. The policies are clearly defined & it's a fine way to run a business. Over the course of the last year, every time I'd see Hillary's postings pop up, I'd say to myself, "I should check that out...someday." If you don't have tap shoes, don't worry, you can rent them from her for three bucks a class. If you think the footwork will be too complicated, don't worry, it's no harder than following along in a country western line dancing class. I wasn't sure what to expect when I registered for my first Tap aholics class, but I had nothing to fear. It was super fun! And, the teacher, Anna, was such a great teacher. I had taken a few tap classes when I was a child, but haven't tapped in more years than I'm going to confess to. ;-) Anna's classes have allowed me to relearn in a fun environment. I grew up tap dancing (from about age 8 until I was 18), but then I stepped away for a few years during and after college because of my hectic schedule and my (perceived) lack of options when it came to adult tap classes. One day, I saw a Living Social deal for TAP-a-holic classes, and I knew I had to at least check it out. I decided to use my deal for "TAProbics" classes, and now I'm hooked! I would describe TAProbics as being a Zumba or Jazzercize class but for tap dancers. It's so much fun and a great aerobic workout! If you are a near-professional or professional level tap dancer, I highly recommend Matthew Corbett's Broadway-Style classes given at Hillary Ann Ryan's Tapaholics. Matt, (a graduate of Colorado Mesa University where he was a student of and mentored by Melanie Buchanan Murray), is an extremely talented instructor whose classes are demanding, rewarding and one hell of a lot of fun. In my "tap" world that's close to perfection. Over the forty years I've been in the "business," I've been fortunate to work with some of the best. Gus Girodano (Dance Inc. Chicago). Lou Conte, founder Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, (Boss). In NYC, Donald Sadler/Dottie Lester (No No Nanette - 1st National)... Peter Genero/Ernest Flatt/Joe Layton (Lorelei - Broadway). Working with Matt... the line of "some of the best" has not been broken. The first half of his class focuses on technique which is immediately incorporated into intensive choreography that is either completed in the 2nd half of the hour or carried over to the next few classes. The sense of learning a full-on Broadway-style routine at the end of the session is very satisfying. Speaking of satisfying - Matt also teaches Tap Workshops for Ms. Ryan. I have taken his last two, "Moses Supposes" from Singing In The Rain (THAT was an adventure that only top-level choreography can give one) and most recently, the Anything Goes tap number. It just doesn't get much closer to the real Broadway rehearsal experience. I've been there, I know. That's why I'm comfortable writing such a glowing review. I have also taken seven solo classes with Matt. These are focused, tap-problem-solving hours that were extremely productive. Matthew Corbett is 24. I'm 68. He has cut me the perfect amount of "slack" due to my olde bones... while honing my dormant skills with courtesy and respect, yet never losing an ounce of the professional attitude that all serious dancers share. And I must say... the hard work is paying off. I'm remembering the entire routines... my technique is improving by leaps and bounds... AND... I've lost 25 pounds. Okay, so I am checking off an item from my bucket list. I have wanted to take tap lessons forever. There are alot of dance studios around that offer tap, but they don't do it like Hillary does. Hillary understands the importance of what a 'beginner' is feeling. She starts with the basics and builds a routine from what she had shown you. She constantly reminds you to let go and enjoy the moment. Many studios you just have to jump in and try to catch on. This is not the case for this class. The class itself was fantastic! In fact, I would have taken more if the studio weren't so disorganized that they couldn't keep their own schedule straight. Are they offering a class this month? If they actually respond to your calls or emails, they can't confirm until a day or two before the class actually begins, and even then, there's a good chance they will cancel or change things at the last minute. It's a lot of work to fit these classes into my own busy schedule. I really wish the management would put in the same amount of effort. read more
