There are several Tan Stands in Edinburgh and the one on South Clerk Street is very popular with the University students. Sun beds are available as well as an impressive range of spray and fake tans available. The tans are all very reasonably priced, with just 5 minutes on the sun bed costing around £2 and spray tans are available at £15. Because trained therapists spray you, there is absolutely no chance of you getting the awful streaks and patches which so frequently occur with fake tans. The staff are very friendly, inviting and knowledge about the various tanning options available to the customers. There is also a beauty salon attached to The Tan Stand which offers a range of therapies such as manicures, eyebrow shaping and waxing, which is also extremely well priced - about £5-8. There is no need to make an appointment and I frequently walked in and been served immediately. It would be difficult to find a cheaper tanning and beauty salon in Edinburgh.

I wish I could go to her regularly, but I now live in the US so unfortunately only get to go back to her occasionally. I mainly get the Guinot Hydradermie facial. I don't know how she does it but no matter whats going on with my skin, it always looks and feels great after she has finished with it and for many weeks after. I've probably had hundreds of facials in many cities round the world, including other Guinot salons and the flagship Guinot salon in London - honestly none have ever been as good as Lisa. The salon is intimate, quiet and relaxing. Her prices are good and she comes across as a kind, friendly, unassuming person who is very, very good at what she does - I just wish she was nearer!!

Gel mani lasted 15 days until I soaked it off only because the growth was showing. Apart from that, one tiny chip day 9 or 10, zero peeling, almost no wear on the tips (and I chose a dark color!). I got loads of compliments on my nails. Mani itself was relaxing and pampering. Lovely hand massage, gentle but thorough cuticle care. Minx pedi lasted about the same but I removed it even though it still held up in great condition. They offer several options depending on how much time you have and how much pampering you'd like. If you have some time and the pounds to spare, you absolutely will get what you pay for here. Staff was super friendly and attentive. I definitely look forward to returning!

I am still scratching shellac off the skin because the technician refused to remove it. When I commented on the problem, the technician got angry with me for requesting too complex a service and for waiting to notice the spots (a French manicure with a gold top coat falls under the standard menu everywhere that I have been, and I can't see under the nails while the tech is working on the top of the nail). When I asked to speak to the manager, the technician said that her mother owned the salon and that I would not get anywhere with a complaint. Staff called to hustle me for more money the next day. I paid in advance well more than I have ever paid for the same combination of services, but staff demand almost twice as much money by claiming the advanced payment was only a deposit. They literally increased the price after the service because I complained. It is also worth noting that the salon is dirty, disorganized, and badly decorated with cheap tacky synthetics. The service finished late, causing me to miss a show. I was there for hours and they felt put upon when I asked for water. Most places offer tea or water if not wine and food as part of the package. And for some reason the spa had a blood and carnage military movie playing complete with pieces of people's bodies being gutted and blown apart. My manicure was nothing but carnage. Not typical viewing for a day spa! If you are performing a service on another person's skin, you try to create a safe, neutral space for all and make it about the needs of the client and not your spoiled ego.

It was as if they were trying to kid your brain into thinking that you were in fact on holiday, so that'd you'd tan faster. All it did was make me irritated and grumpy. That lost this place it's first star. The second I took off because of the staff. When we walked in there were two girls behind the counter and another girl draped over the counter chatting to them. They stopped taling abruptly when we walked in, but all three of them stared us up and down disapprovingly, without even trying to be subtle, before looking at eachother with a puzzled expression on their faces. In short, if you're a radioactive ahde of neon rom using sunbeds too much, get yourself to this place and you'll fit right. If not, you'll be gawped at like a circus freak.
