We were a family of four and sat near the window. It's true there's no AC, but with the windows open, it isn't so bad. The cushioned benches and colorful quilted ceiling along with the Moroccan lanterns really evoke the feeling of being transported to North and Western Africa. And I have traveled and eaten my way across Morocco. The chef here is from Mauritania, and the cuisine is similar to that of Morocco's. It's a pre-fixe menu, and we were given lentil soup with pita bread, hummus, and a platter filled with stewed beef & dates, chicken and green olives, and chickpeas all over couscous. The presentation was a feast for the eyes, and everything tasted delicious. The lentil soup, by the way, was the tastiest lentil soup I have ever had. I could do that, pita, and a salad and be satisfied. We finished with a pot of Moroccan mint tea, where our server poured the first round from way up high as they do in Morocco, surrounding countries, and the Middle East. He did great without spilling lol. Service was excellent. Our server was the only one working the dining room, and he did a great job attending to everyone's needs, including those of other diners around us. He had a sense of humor and was very generous when he asked if anyone wanted more food and tea. If you're looking to dine on Northwestern African food and enjoy a unique ambiance, this is a wonderful spot. It's perfect for dates and groups. Enjoy and expect to be wow'ed.

Why they put it in plastic bags on the table is a mystery and not especially classy. Very little explanation that everything is served family style. If I wanted family style dining, I would have stayed home and cooked. We had a pricey vegetarian appetizer plate where most of the foods tasted too vinegary or garlicky. The eggplant salad tasted more of onion than eggplant. The fish was pretty good but by the time it finally came, I wasn't hungry anymore. The rice had no flavour and the fries, although nicely crisp also were tasteless. The taste I had of my partner's chocolate cake was good but cold in the middle as if it wasn't fully defrosted. The service was friendly yet not attentive. We had to ask for soda twice before it came. The constant reel of what I think was Lebanese music videos projected on the wall were a visually loud distraction from the overall lack of ambiance. The sweetest old lady runs the place by herself & she makes a great Shisha. We came for the 2 nights we were in Montreal and ordered blueberry mint with a little peach. She doesn't start the Shisha herself so you do have to start it. The Shisha is smooth with great smoke. You do have to use 2 coals as it's a larger head but she gives you extra coals when she delivers it to you. Give this place a try if you're looking for somewhere to relax, study, or spend time with friends!

The pricing was a bit steep, but then Rayan is the only place I know that grills fish like this, coated with bran, a traditional Egyptian way. The food came fairly quickly, and was hot and fresh. The fish came with a large portion of rice and vegetables, as well as chopped onions. The rice was of the "minute rice" type, which is not my favorite, but it was seasoned and a good side to have. The vegetables were doused in garlic and melted butter/margarine, and better than I expected for something reminiscent of frozen vegetable mix that's steamed/sauteed. The fish was very well seasoned, perhaps by marination, with lots of parlsey and fresh lemon. The wheat bran gave a subtle flavour to the fish, which remained tender and juicy inside thanks to the coating. If you don't enjoy the texture of the bran, you can always brush it off. Good stuff! Looking forward to try more.
