Northern Chinese cuisine isn't as common to find here in Canberra, but it has been increasingly…read moremore popular with the arrival of Dickson Dumpling Cafe and the Shanghai Dumpling Cafe in the city. Both however are inferior to King Fook, a hidden gem that has been around for years and can be found at the Florey shops. I'd suggest it probably serves the best hand made noodles and dumplings in Canberra. Sure, you can find your staple Chinese food such as the sweet and sour pork, spring rolls and fried rice here and it's still tasty, but it's the Shanghai Xiao Long Bao (steamed soup filled dumplings) that are amazing that you'll be hard pressed to NOT burn your mouth on them as they taste that good. The 'Pot Stickers" or Pan fried dumplings are also amazing, as are quirky treats like the "Pockets with tasty meats" which is a little half pastry that you fill with a sort of san choy bao style mixture. Really good. As with most chinese restaurants, it's kinda cluttered and informal looking but the service is quick, pricing decent and food outstanding.

One of my favourite restaurants in Canberra has long been the Chairman and Yip and on our recent…read moretrip I was a little disconcerted to see it was no longer at its Bunda Street address - I found later it had moved to new digs in Barton - and in its place is Tasting China. Well we were there, so in we went.... Still a very elegant and inviting place -dark wood, a splash of colour around, comfortable seating, moody lighting - and the menu was appealing. A good range of dishes representing the cuisines of Canton, Sichaun and Shanghai. The wine list is well put together, with a fine selection of regions and varieties, although somewhat limited where "by the glass" is concerned. But a bottle of Geoff Merrill's Grenache rosé suited us just fine! To the food - we began with Zhong dumplings - gelatinous and tender dumplings filled with a mix of chopped boiled prawns and ginger, and doused with a mix of soy and garlic and chilli oil. These were simply outstanding - among the best dumplings we have eaten - the filling was juicy and aromatic, full of warm flavours and the companion sauces and oils a wonderful boost. Our second starter, sea scallops with sugar snap peas, sesame oil and ginger sauce, was another mouth-watering experience - the scallops were plump and luscious, so very lightly cooked, a scatter of shredded ginger added warmth and spice, while the snappy peas crunched and delighted. Stunning. Warned of the size of the mains by our waiter, we ordered only one - a very wise move - and our Sichuan Rock Ling in hot chilli oil arrived - a massive bowl of soup filled with batons of succulent fish, and well stocked with Sichuan pepper, numbing the lips and delighting the palate. A bowl of steamed rice helped soak up the soup. This was a very spicy and fitting conclusion to a brilliant lunch. I have to say Tasting China is a more than worthy tenant of the old Chairman site - excellent food, great waiters, very good beverage list, welcoming décor - it will be on my must visit restaurants for future trips to Canberra. We loved it.... Absolutely recommended!!

With the undressed facade through to the basic arrangement of chairs and tables inside, the initial…read moreimpression of the Dickson Dumpling House -- DDH -- would elude you to the prejudice of inferiority. However, stepped passed this prejudice, the experience, the food and the overall value for money is Heckin' Good. The DDH should be bookmarked in your Yelp account, if it isn't already, and be visited often to satisfy your embedded desire for dumplings. But first, facts. I claimed all of these things, yet provided no evidence. And to that my only reply would be 'Trust me.' Firstly, because this is an online review, where no matter how hard you would caress this screen with your tongue it would provide you with no extra information to prove my facts than by reading it. And secondly, because reading the reviews of the other Yelpers would convincingly indicate that this place does serve good food. When this many people indicate that this place is good there are ever only two explanations, it's either a well organised scam or it's the truth. And we would all indicate to the latter. I hope by now you can sense that this review is a bit of a jest about the truth about DDH. Simply put, everything is Heckin' Good. The dumplings are, for me, perfect. The noodle dishes are prepared so authentically that I feel like my stomach consciously turns off its ability to feel pain and fullness. And the price that you pay to enjoy all of what I've mentioned is amazingly fair. The DDH is a fair contender for being one of the best dumpling places in Canberra, relatively. Of course you could pay twice more for half the amount at another -- fancier -- restaurant, but if you're just wanting to satisfy your dumpling cravings and do it to a level where you're so incredibly full that you're borderline vomiting and not break the bank this is definitely the place.
