Tandem Ciders is one of our all time favorite places on the Leelanau Peninsula. The vibe is laid back and friendly and on any given day, you can find tourists and locals alike, enjoying some delicious ciders. I especially like that many of their ciders are on the drier-side, but they do have enough variety for every taste. My personal favorites are Green Man and Smackintosh. One of the traditions we have when visiting Tandem is having a pickled egg. On our first visit, we spied the jar behind the bar and asked about it. Having never had one, we took the bartender's recommendation and tried one. We were surprised at how much we liked it! The indoor seating is cozy. We usually visit in the fall and love when we can sit outside. In the past, there were some fire pits outside to enjoy, but we didn't see them out this past trip. To be honest, the outdoor space could use a little decluttering and sprucing up, but that is literally the only negative thing I could say about this wonderful place. read more

An absolute delight. The cider is top notch and the surroundings are even better. What a lovey place to enjoy nature, maybe sit by a fire and drink your cider in the trees like the universe intended. What an absolute pleasure. The ciders are fantastic and I don't even drink. My partner ordered a 6 sampler so we got to try almost all of them - the Smackintosh and the strawberry one were standouts for me. And honestly, 3 ounces is just the right amount for me too, so I love that you can just order this size, flight or not. Anything you love enough to take home, they have larger bottles of. Inside they have merch, clothing and the world's softest hoodies. Sadly, they were out of my size, but next year I'm getting one come hell or soft fuzzy cozy high water. They also serve a limited food item and we were lucky enough to get their last crepe of the day... boy let me tell you it was worth the wait and worth the carbs! Served on a real plate with real silverware, eating a crepe and sipping on cider, laughing around the fire in the apple orchards, you're getting a peak Michigan experience here, kids. This was one of my favorite spots in the traverse city area. Some of our group's favorites included Bee's Dream and the semi dry options. It's a super affordable spot, and they even had some very cute merch. The outdoor area was thoroughly distanced and they were taking covid precautions very seriously. We went to four wineries and one cidery yesterday, and this was the one cidery, since it was in the area. They have a nice seating area outdoors but not much space indoors, though they have one pretty nice bathroom (and outdoors, they have a Port-A-Potty...). I wasn't feeling that great since we had drunk a lot of wine that day but I still sampled two ciders, the Smackintosh and the Coloma Blue. The Smackintosh tasted odd to me, but later my friends said I should have sampled that BEFORE the Coloma Blue (which was delicious, by the way - tasted like a blueberry apple cider). I believe it was $1.50 each per 3 ounce sampler pour. They have a small area with t-shirts and whatnot in the back, too, and I actually ended up buying a print for $15 ... I can't wait to frame it and put it on my wall. read more

This is a cool hidden barn off the main road. You order at a window and find a picnic table or pull some chairs out of your car. It was basically a big tailgate style setting with a barn in the middle selling cider. The staff was very friendly and inviting from the second we walked up. I ordered the Scrumpty Little Woody and was pretty disappointed. It was warm (not sure if that was on purpose or not), and it didn't really have any flavor. It was supposedly aged in oak barrels but I couldn't taste that. For being their strongest cider, it just tasted like flat apple juice. The setting was enjoyable but I didn't love my cider. Others in our group enjoyed theirs and the few pregnant ones enjoyed their alcohol free drinks they made. read more

The most interesting ciders are based on apple flavors that are tart, tannin, complex. Tandem is one of the few that go down this path- great pairing with food, really diverse. If you like Virtue cider you have to come here- and what a cool place. Great setting, laid back ambiance. This should be at the top of any cider lovers list. We visited this stop at the end of a day touring some local hard cider spots and were happy to end the day with such a gem. Staff were incredibly nice, prices reasonable, closing time a little flexible, and the ciders - importantly - delicious. We tried 11 of their ciders and then added on the Pomona at the end and shared the two flights between us to get a chance to try all their offerings. Ciders were all solid, some very good, and some excellent. The Strawberry Jam was incredibly good - so good that we bought some bottles of that to take home with us. Probably the best cider of the whole weekend! Bee's Dream was also delicious. Flights were super flexible and they'd let you build them to your hearts content - no worries about the precise number you wanted to try. Lots of fun outdoor areas that were dog-friendly, but also a few indoor rooms as well! This spot was excellent - highly recommend! read more

We are in love with everything about Tandem Ciders! Their facility is so quaint and tidy, the grounds are beautiful and the staff is so friendly. We've been frequenting Tandem since they opened and don't make a trip to TC/Sutton's Bay without stopping in for some cider, a pickled egg and cider to go of course. We even brought our daughter with us when she was just a year and she was welcomed with love. They had toys for her to play with and a rocking moose. I think their cider is priced right and love that they're sold in large glass bottles. We've never had a cider we didn't love here. Our favorites are Smackintosh, Crabster and The Greenman. If you're ever in the area do yourself a favor and go check this cute little cidery. Luckily for all of us you can order online, find it in some bars/restaurants and even stores. YES. YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES. First time visit to Tandem this past weekend and I'm already in love. In LOVE. Madly, passionately in love. And here's why: First off--it's adorable. Kind of tucked in the middle of farm country in Sutton's Bay, as most places there are. It's kind of a little barn type thing with a few seats at the bar and a bench by the window. When we came all the seats at the bar were filled so we stood by the window bench and the gal at the counter was super helpful, coming over to us and giving us tastings that way. When we decided on our pints we took them to the picnic table which was very comfortable but since it was a sunny day--also very HOT. So we moved to the grass by the barn in the shade. So perfect. A great place to hang out with some friends on a sunny summer day. Secondly--The ciders are damn good. The drafts go from more tart and crisp to sweeter as you go through the tastings. I have to admit I'm more a sweet girl but the tart was still delicious to me. They had 5 varieties (I think. 4 or 5) on draft and I tried them all. I also tried the bottled Sweetheart and Smackintosh and both were fantastic. All are made with local apples as well. Awesome. I also tried a tasting of the apple brandy which was also excellent. If you want a snack they also have that. Some locally made raclette, peanuts, and picked eggs. We got a few bowls of the peanuts and they went perfectly with the ciders. Thirdly the price--pretty darn cheap. Tastes of their draft ciders are free and then they have a few bottled varieties that you can taste for a small price. Most pints, if you choose to do a full pour of any of the drafts, are around $4-5. They also have half pints at $2 if you wanted to do two different varieties that add up to a full pint. I ended up loving the sweet Smackintosh variety which came bottled. My friend and I split one bottle and it ended up to be about a pint each. The bottle was $11 so it came out to about 5.50 per pint. Again, not bad for something locally made and completely delicious. You can get the bottles to go or get growlers of the draft ciders to go as well. Heck yes! I got a bottle of Smackintosh to go and I'm saving it for a celebratory drink when I'm all moved in and settled into my new house. I'm excited! If you're up in the area doing wine tastings be sure to factor Tandem into your plans. Even if you're not doing tastings, be sure to factor Tandem into your plans. Came here with some girlfriends to try the ciders. It didn't disappoint! My favorite was the Coloma Blue because it had such a good, rich flavor. But their award winning Smackintosh was the most refreshing. I would strongly recommend avoiding the pop that's made with apple cider vinegar. It was very grassy. The inside was very crowded, not because they didn't have space, but because everyone was crowded around the counter and the bathroom. It's a little drive and effort to find Tandem Ciders but the payoff is worth it. We arrived around 1pm on a weekend afternoon and the parking lot was already full. Luckily, as we were walking in another couple walked out, so we scooped up their bar stools. There's a definite lack of space and seating at the bar near the front door, but it looked like there were other rooms to hang out in. Our bartender was very friendly and efficient, getting us our cider flights within minutes of sitting down. Tandem has some of the best hard ciders in Michigan, hands down. My own personal qualm with them is that it's so expensive if you manage to find it distributed somewhere. I once unknowingly paid $9 for a 16oz can of their Smackintosh at Mudgie's. Maybe it's Mudgie's fault, but maybe not. Back to the cider! This taproom has plenty of ciders on tap and flights were affordably priced. They had a little bar game that involved stacking rocks, and I was able to stack six #likeaboss. My husband and I enjoyed our visit to Tandem. It's definitely a cider house we'd visit again when in Traverse City. read more

I've honestly never seen the allure of this place. My friends and I do a lot of Leelanau wine events, so I've been here a bunch of times, and it's just never been very good. Their ciders are all very, very dry, and the flavor just isn't up to par with the other cider places around here. As a lover of ciders, I have wanted to check out Tandem Ciders for awhile. I was so excited to hear we would be stopping there on our wine tasting tour! Tandem Ciders is a small rustic barn, definitely not quite as polished or fancy as some of the wineries in the area. The atmosphere is homey and there are toys and books for kids as well as a bathroom that felt like it belonged in my grandma's house. I got a sampler with 5 different ciders, including the Our Perry, Crabster, Scrumpy Little Woody and the Pretty Penny. Unfortunately I wasn't that thrilled with most of them. My favorite was the Our Perry (I ended up buying a bottle). I had one that really just tasted like watered down beer... not so great. None of the employees smiled the entire time we were there, which was kind of off-putting to me. Overall, I am glad I stopped in, but I doubt I will go back. read more

Don't drive by this cute place! It's small with seating inside and at multiple outdoor spots. People are so friendly and will share space with you. We were there for a tasting and some guy came in, bought a pack of ciders and asked if there was anyone there who played disc golf. One of the employees recommended he check with one of the tables outside since she thought there were some people there who played. It was fun to see strangers connect. The ciders run from dry to pretty sweet. We loved the Smakintosh, which was absolutely bursting with apple flavor. They offer a really great flight and hopefully you find something you like. Straight up, this is a cool little joint. If I lived up here, I would easily find myself here all the time. It's super tiny inside, room for a bar, a few tables, and a dart board. What caught my eye, along with all the hard cider, was the Picked Eggs. I've seen the jars before in many places but never the guts to try them. Now is my chance. I anticipated a pretty strong vinegar flavor, one to make my eyes water. It was furthest from the truth. To my surprise, it had only a mild vinegar flavor and the hot sauce gives it a nice balance between bitter and hot. The bartender mentioned that they make them every several days because they go through them so quickly. We were driving around looking for this place and as we passed by I commented, "Aw that barn is so cute with the bicycle built for two on the front!" which was met by a sarcastic, "Hmm...I wonder if that could be Tandem Ciders..." haha. It didn't necessarily look like a cidery it just looked like a really cute barn so be careful as you're looking for it. It's pretty small and doesn't fit a ton of people, so if they're busy you have to wait. They give out free samples of the four ciders that they have on draft, and then if you want to try more you have to pay a buck. They've also got fancy sodas too. read more
