Her teacher ms. Alexis is awesome and my daughter loves her classes. They just had their recital and it was amazing!!! Last year I was a back stage mom but this year I decided to sit in the audience and watch, my daughter had two numbers. after the first one I was able to go and sit with her and wait for the second number. Ms. Geena is so nice and helpful and great with the kids. I can't say enough about this school the classes are by far more professional than any other school we have been to. Mrs. Lisa is also amazing always very attentive and very warm, the numbers that she choreographed were amazing. I have recommended this school to others at my daughter's school and we will definitely be going back this fall and my daughter can't wait to start her new classes with ms. Another friend had taken classes at this academy before and highly recommended it, so the three of us booked an Introduction to Ballet class on Sunday at 12:00. Check-in was quick and easy. The class was $25 for an hour and a half, which I think is very reasonable considering it's from an actual ballet school. There's no strict dress code, which worked out well since none of us owned ballet attire -- we just wore regular workout clothes and socks, and it was perfectly fine. The instructor was wonderful. She started by asking who had never taken ballet before, then positioned the newer students between people with experience so it would be easier to follow along. I really appreciated that, as I have no dance background and definitely found myself lost more than once. Having people around me to follow made it much less intimidating. The class itself was energetic and fun. The instructor was patient, encouraging, and made sure to keep things approachable for beginners. I'm sure my form was atrocious and I messed up plenty of times, but nobody cared -- the atmosphere was supportive and welcoming, and everyone was just there to enjoy themselves and keep trying. The class had people of all different skill levels and abilities, and it felt very inclusive. Overall, this was a great introduction class, especially for someone nervous about trying something new. I never once felt self-conscious, and I genuinely had fun. I'd highly recommend this academy to anyone looking to take dance classes, whether you have experience or not. If I were interested in pursuing ballet, I would definitely come back.

This review is actually about the Company's debut of "The Cookout" City Center last night was full…read moreof dance enthusiasts and some very important members of the dance community; i.e., Sylvia Waters. It opened with The Cookout. Let's just say....It was a cookout that I would have left early....before the ribs were done and the potato salad came out. The dance came off tentative and not strongly executed. The movements seemed effortless and not very challenging. With songs like Bra and Movin by Brass Construction....I expected some powerhouse stand-out performances and felt disappointed. At first I thought it was just me but when the dance ended, my best friend said...."that looked more like a rehearsal". The costumes did not do it for me and I think this should have involved more dancers in vinettes telling different stories you would see at at cookout...."The drunk Uncle" The dancing Auntie that turns up......young folk crazy dances all interpreted through modern jazz and ballet. Even the sexy male lead dancers ...(and did I say SEXY) could not save this lackluster dance. This was clearly not DTH's lane. Like when Ailey did "Home" paying Homage to the Paradise Garage days paired with the aids crisis....I felt that all through my body...it connected and certainly resonated with everyone. The other three DTH pieces were brilliantly executed and beautiful to watch. This was truly their lane. All of the Principle dances were absolutely amazing!!!! Kouadio Davis' presences is captivating as well as Derek Brockington. Elias Re has the most beautiful long arms making his extensions memorable. Wanted to see more of this dancer. Carly Greene was FABULOUS!!!!!!!

When I was a dancer I had friends in the company and used to watch them in person all the time at New York City Center! Recently, I had an unavoidable conflict -- my family had planned a surprise retirement party for me, a once-in-a-lifetime event. It happened to fall on the same day as a mandatory rehearsal. I reached out to the school immediately, explained the situation, and asked if an exception could be made so my daughter could attend this important family milestone. Unfortunately, the owner was inflexible, showed no empathy, and made it clear that if my daughter missed rehearsal, she would not be allowed to perform. Over the course of the season, I spent more than $700 on tickets, costumes, and shoes. Spending the money was not the issue -- I understand that dance can be costly -- but when there is a total lack of flexibility and understanding, it leaves a sour taste. In my opinion, family should always come first. Because of this experience, my daughter will no longer be attending this dance school. I will be looking for a place where family is valued and people are treated with respect and professionalism. Communication is another area that could be improved. The school relies solely on email for important updates -- no reminders are sent home with students, no text alerts, and no phone calls. For busy, working parents who are not constantly checking email, this can easily lead to missed information. A modern, multi-channel reminder system would make a big difference. If you're looking for a rigorous, performance-focused program, this may be a good fit. But if you value flexibility, empathy, and consistent, accessible communication, you may want to consider these factors before enrolling.

I did bring this issue to the owner and she refused to refund a months worth of classes for both of my kids. My kids are never going back! I have no reason to lie I have had a decent experience up until this point. However, I must warn others about unethical business practices.

To my dismay, this did not occur. Many of the dance instructors showed a lack of creativity, and some movements for the younger classes were not age appropriate. My granddaughter said she felt isolated as a new student because the dance instructors showed obvious preference toward the students who were there the previous years. She did not feel a sense of fellowship as a member of the group which should have been fostered by the dance instructors. The instructors also offered little positive instruction when critiquing a dancer's missteps. They did, however, insult the dancer's intellect, which caused shame and insecurity. It's also essential to know, classes aren't held every Saturday as expressed during registration, and you won't get everything that was promised with the registration fee. Keep in mind that Devore Dance charges you for the last month of classes right at the start, even though no classes are actually happening that month. So, you end up paying double for the first month of dance lessons as well as the required registration fee. My interaction with the staff was also pretty unpleasant; I found them to be rude and dismissive. They showed a lack of interest in my concerns or questions, as though they were not knowledgeable or affiliated with the Devore Dance Center. Overall, I do not recommend Devore Dance Center as your upcoming dance experience on any level. This experience was HORRIBLE and not worth the hassle, stress or money! As someone who supports Black owned Businesses, I am truly disappointed and expected more.
