The quality and variety of produce is great, too. As others mentioned, there are plenty of foods you may not have bought in the market. That encourages one to be more adventurous in cooking/eating habits, and I've developed storage/preserving skills. The local farms that supply Shared Harvest are superb growers. They are Riverland, Cider Hill, and Picadilly Farm. The operation of the CSA is pretty smooth; you pay ahead, pickup your produce, and there are optional extra items you can order in advance (cheese, apples, maple syrup, etc). Brief weekly emails keep you informed of ordering deadlines and what you got in your share.

Most CSA shareholders buy their shares months in advance, to give the farmers income when they need to buy seeds and equipment. You don't just show up at a CSA distribution and expect to get a share! It's like walking into Fenway during a playoff game and expecting to get tickets. Anyway, I like Shared Harvest CSA because of the variety and amount of veggies. Unlike some winter CSAs, Gretta doesn't have to fill out the share with lots of jam or cheese from other producers (though you can order all sorts of goodies to pick up at the share distribution). We got apples, carrots, squash, cabbage, greens, lettuce, potatoes, popcorn, beets-- all kinds of stuff, and lots of it! I had plenty for my family of five. It was *completely* worth it.

I guess the writers wanted to tits to understand that there is always an escape when eaten by a wolf if you want to take the low road. Fortunately the puppet show was free. I usually come for the little walk around the farm to see what's growing, the u-pick flower garden, to swing on the swing set, and to see if any farm animals are around. There's a parking lot and picnic tables scattered around. Pricing is reasonable, u-pick is about $15, they used to charge by flower stem. They also host events and have activities for kids. Last week, my husband and I picked up a chicken at Templeton Family Organics. It was, by far, the…read morebest chicken I have ever tasted! If you have never had a farm fresh chicken, it really is something to try. It is hard for many people to understand why there is such a difference in grocery store prices vs farm prices (and then, organic farm prices). It's worth it to me because the flavor is so insanely better than anything I have bought at a store. This meat is even better than the chicken we get from a local non-organic farm. The other differences I noticed is that the skin is much heartier. It does not split easily. It's a healthier chicken, so the collagen is not compromised. My proof is also in the bottom of the pan. There was not much fat once the juices cooled. They solidified into gelatin, which tells me the collagen is healthier. We both noticed when eating the meat from bones, the bones actually had flavor! So, I cannot wait to get another one and make chicken stock from the bones. Also, the chicken was very big. I was under the misconception that only GMO feed and steroid injected chickens get that big at that young age. Not true. What is true is that all parts are proportionately large. As opposed to grocery store chickens that have huge breast meat areas, and the other parts are small. This chicken clearly got great exercise. We also got a sugar pumpkin. It was wonderful too. Some pie pumpkins are very hard to cut into, the skin is like bark. These pumpkins cut well, roasted well and had a nice autumn flavor. I will be making my pie soon. We ordered a turkey for Thanksgiving. I am very much looking forward to it. The turkeys are raised the same way the chickens are, and I am quite certain the flavor and quality will be unbelievable.

Of course, we made it on the last night...Labor Day weekend (Friday), we were able to make it part of a trip to Marshfield so it was great. We made the trip....traffic was not to bad, which was a huge bonus. Upon arrival, we noticed that it was a very busy night at Langwater...tons of cars parked in the front of the farm in an orderly fashion. We were lucky enough to get a spot near the entry and make our way to the Farm. Immediately, we saw two lines....one for pizza and one for drinks (at the bar). The lines moved quickly. The stafff at Langwater has a real great process of getting each order in and moving on to the next customer. Obviously, they have done this before! The pizza that we ordered as "excellent". The wood-fired ovens were roaring and pumping pizza's out quickly! The bartenders at the bar were just as quick. Plenty of help and everyone moving through the drink line was awesome to see. Music was being played with hundreds of families and friends laying around on their blankets and beach chairs, which made everyone happy and the vibe relaxed! In case you are not familiar with the co-op thing, members pay a certain amount of money to join the co-op, and in turn, get a bounty of fresh, locally-grown, mostly organic food items each week. It cost me about $600 for the season, and that includes weekly baskets of fruit, vegetables, cheese, and herbs from mid-June to mid-October. It also includes one fall basket and one winter basket. The quality of the food I've received thus far has been amazing. Everything is super fresh and super delicious. We've had everything from bok choy and salad turnips to bell peppers and blueberries, and it's all been outstanding. Plus the cheese! Oh, the cheese. It's all been SO good. There's been goat cheese, gouda, raw cheddar, monterey jack - the list goes on. We've also gotten a couple different types of vinegar from the Herb Farmacy too. Every week brings with it a new surprise. The best thing about being a part of this CSA (other than supporting local farms, the benefits for the environment, the quality, etc) is that the different types of items have forced me to go beyond my comfort zone and try new ingredients. I never would have bought Swiss Chard, for example, at the grocery store, but I've discovered how good it is since getting it through my share. So it's opening up all sorts of new culinary worlds for me. I know there's a pretty serious wait list for next season (at last count, I think they said there were 140 names on it), but if you are looking for a CSA in or around the North Shore (they have pick up locations in Melrose, Salem, and Marblehead every Thursday), check it out!
