I always stay on the 3rd floor with the spectacular 240 degree view of the fishing boats coming in and out of the ANB harbor, the bridge and historic downtown. Karras Day Inn is walking distance to everything! Also a back porch for morning coffee and listening to the eagles and ravens. Whether the sun is out or the southeast natural rain, the view itself is spectacular. They no longer have breakfast served but kitchenettes suffice, as well as the local restaurants near by.

We had the opportunity to spend last week in Alaska for the vacation of a lifetime with Luke and…read morehis outstanding crew. It really is difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed this trip. We spent a week enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and filling the coolers with delicious fish. We witnessed pods of whales feeding, brown bear and more bald eagles than we could count. We caught halibut, several species of salmon and numerous other species of fish, as well as Dungeness crab and delicious shrimp. The accommodations on the boat were outstanding and the crew couldn't have been better. The food served on the boat wasn't good, wasn't great, but was phenomenal. The chef and his meals were top notch. I would highly recommend Alaskan Coastal Outfitters for a serious fishing trip or family vacation.

I spoke with Luke a few different times before I booked, and everything he told me to expect, is what you can expect. Luke is a straight forward guy and will answer all your questions. The main stay is on the Huntress, which is a really nice and well equipped 60' yacht with numerous bunk rooms and has a really good chef, Ed, on board. Ed even shared some recipe's with me that have been a hit back home. As for the bears, we had 3 guys hunting, and on the first evening, one of the guys, Andy, killed a really big black bear. About the 4th day, I killed my very respectful bear after a really experiencing stalk. The 3rd guy did not kill. There were opportunities for him to kill, however, he was after a record book bear as he has killed many bears in the past. If you are in the market for a bear hunt, I highly recommend contacting Luke for all details about what to expect.

The Staff-the staff here are amazing and work their asses off, especially Captain Josh (our captain for three days). He was a work horse. He ensured we caught our limits everyday or at least tried really hard to. Not an easy feat considering we were 2 old guys and a female. He was also better than google with the amount of information he was able to share about Alaska, fishing, and all the wildlife we saw. Overall the staff make this trip an amazing experience. They try so hard to make sure you have a good time. 3. The food-yum, yum, yum. Kathy fed us so well. My favorites were the crab, clam chowder, and halibut, but there was also baby back ribs and prime rib. They fixed a made to order lunch each day from a variety of sandwiches and there was all you could eat fresh baked cookies, hot drinks, etc., etc., etc. You definitely won't go hungry here. 4. The Wildlife-Alaska really is beautiful. I was sad to leave. We saw killer whales, a humpback whale, bald eagles, and bears. Thanks to our captain we were able to get really close, too. I loved, loved, loved this place. I hope I'll be able to go back again someday. In the meantime I will recommend it to everyone I know, because it was that fantastic of a trip.

That's a whole lot of restaurants, hotels, and…read morebusinesses I've reviewed since October 2006 (and not one of those review involves a UYE, political statement, gas station, Walgreens, Walmart, etc, but legitimate businesses that I've or someone else in my party paid for.) Damn I spend a lot of money... So for #500, I'm choosing probably one of my most memorial vacations I've done in awhile and doing a review of False Island Lodge. Located about 1.5 hour boat ride out of Sitka Alaska, False Island Lodge sits about a 10 minute boat ride from some of the major fishing grounds of Sitka. The best part about this lodge is that the only other people out here are the commercial fisherman, during my 5 day stay here I didn't see another sport fishing boat around. This makes for an ideal situation if you're going after BIG FISH. False Island Lodge is actually an old logging barge converted into a sportsman lodge. They have about 5 rooms with bunk beds so can hold up to about 20 guests plus they have rooms for their staff as well. For literally being out in the middle of no where, they have all the modern conveniences you would find in anywhere. The lodge has everything you could need from your basics of running hot and cold water and flushing toilets to a flat screen satellite TV and hot tub. Only thing missing was WiFi and a regular phone (you could use their satellite phone if needed) and to be honest I didn't miss having any of those things. They don't have a "chef" but they have a darn good cook that made eating here quite a pleasure with plenty of it including an all you can eat crab feed. I gained about 4 pounds on this vacation. Another bonus is that they provide all the gear for you, so you don't need to take your rods or Gundens with you if you want to use their gear. They run 29 foot boats with heads and the fishing grounds are as close as a 10 minute boat ride but some of the favorite holes are about an hour. During the time here I saw a wide range of wildlife such as Bald Eagles, Bears, Humpback Whales, and Orcas and in our boat caught about 15 different types of fish including two halibuts that were 116 & 164 and several kings that were 25+. We also did some shrimping and crabbing too and brought home 9 boxes of meat which equals to 450 lbs. Overall words can not express what a great time my family had at False Island Lodge. This is definitely one of those diamonds in the roughs and if you're looking for an exceptional Alaska Fishing Experience, this is one of the top lodges I've ever been too. Perfect 5 star rating and hope to go back sometime soon.

Captain Conner kindly shuttled us to the dock location (a very generous exception when I misunderstood the instructions). Guide Garrett, powerful waterman of the Sitka Sound (think a younger more approachable King Triton of The Little Mermaid), created the most wonderful day. He knew pretty much everything about anything oceanic or Alaska history and ALMOST all the bird species (it was a Pigeon Guillemot, Garrett). We will never forget the memorable day (our deltoids are still living it). Thank you Adventure Sitka!

The waters are generally pretty calm on the west side of the island where this tour takes place, so you can get in really close to some amazing rock formations and see all the sea urchins, starfish, eagles, moon jellies, mussels, sea lions, and other wildlife. We did not spot any whales or bears on this trip, but we didn't miss them. It was most enjoyable. You can come as you are, they have all the gear you will need.

We boarded the boat which was new, clean and beautifully designed, plus it had SUPER comfortable seats.  Before we even left the local bay, we saw multiple whales and seals. We went to several areas to see more amazing whales, salmon jumping out of the water, otters and a waterfall! We were able to sit inside or go on the front or back decks for photos or to hang out a bit and observe the natural beauty around us. As a fellow nature lover, It was fun that Captain Gary was excited to see the whales as well even after having grown up in Sitka and seeing them many times before.  He was a wealth of knowledge about the wildlife and area, plus relaxed and easy going.  I appreciate the details about the whales names and that he recently found out how some were related.
