This is the worst hotel I've ever had the misery of staying in. There was mold above the shower,…read moredispensers of soap, etc. in the shower were all empty. Upon arrival, one window had a missing shade, there was no chair to sit on in the room, there were no bedside reading lamps and the comforters on the beds were lumpy because the stuffing had formed into mounds. On top of all that right below my window was an open parking area behind Ernie's bar, which proved to be a gathering place for locals who loudly enjoyed themselves into the wee hours of the morning. All of which made sleeping close to impossible and there was absolutely no response from hotel staff. Said there was nothing they could do about it and frankly, were surly in the process. Stay away is my advice.

I just have so many mixed feelings here…read more.. The good: Staff are friendly and accommodating! Location is incredible, walk to everything! Prices are fantastic. The not-so-good: - Room service is only once a week. This isn't really a huge deal for me, but this place is just not setup and organized around this idea. For example: I was staying for 9 days but I only got 3 pouches of coffee? So I had to go down to the counter and ask for more every 3 days? You should have supplies for your entire stay. - You get to choose which day room service will come. I chose Monday and then...Monday came and went and...they didn't come. I told the front desk, and they came on Tuesday and did a great job, but this was right before I left so I didn't get to bask in the pristineness of it all. - Pillows are horrible. They are WAY WAY WAY too plump. See my photos. They are almost like cubes of pillow. Just as fat as they are wide as they are long. They hurt my neck so bad that I slept without a pillow most nights. No, I am not exaggerating. I asked the front desk about this and they were eager to give me different or more pillows, but this doesn't solve the problem as all the pillows in the whole facility are the same chonker-shaped plumpboiz. (that sentence ain't gonna age well...) They need to get some slimmer/flatter pillows! All pillows in in the whole dang facility are carbon copies of each other, so this issue is unfixable. - Parking is overrun. If you're lucky there will be one spot left. If you're not, you're going to have to use street parking somewhere. - There was a steak in my fridge from the previous guest. - Wi-Fi is slow and constantly boots you off. It's the type that has a pop-up window that makes you type the password, rather than saving the password in your Wi-Fi settings. I sometimes had to reboot my computer multiple times to trick this pop-up window into coming up so that I could re-type the exact same password I had typed dozens of times before. If you need to get work done, go to the library. The Wi-Fi here is too spotty and obnoxious. If you like thick, springy, plump pillows, I can recommend this place without uh...reservation. If you don't, bring your own pillow. Seriously.

Our captain Nate must be related to Aquaman - he has an uncanny ability to know how long to fish one spot before trying another. Back ashore, Kristi and her staff kept our bellies full with just-right family comfort food, and clean, quiet 4-start equiv hotel level accommodations for rest. Would def go again! Pro tip: Bring a seasick patch (Scopolamine). I'm normally sea-sensitive, but between the patch and Nate's boatmanship, I had no problems whatsoever.

We…read morehad a group of six friends, four from Hawaii and two from Sacramento, and we met in Sitka for what turned out to be an epic fishing adventure. The staff at the inn was friendly and accommodating from the very start it seemed that there was nothing they wouldn't do to make our stay enjoyable. Our lodging was more than comfortable with the added bonus of a fantastic view that gets even better when the sun sets. Our hosts, Rich and Karen Kraft, are the nicest couple that take the time to get to know you and make sure there isn't more they can do for you. Courtney and Cameron assists you in the day to day things like shuttling you to the boat and the market if needed. Christie is the awesome chef that provides you with delicious breakfasts and gourmet dinners. Her desserts are to die for, the cheesecake with raspberry sauce being my favorite. She even bakes cookies and crumbles for you to eat on the boat. The fishing turned out to be catching on our trip. Captain Tyler, who is the Kraft's son, is second to none in Sitka. I truly believe we boated more fish in the four days of fishing than any other charter. He expertly put us on the fish every day even when the conditions were rough, and the conditions were pretty rough the last two days. We even limited out on silvers (36) and halibut (6) on the second day by 1:00. We all went home with 92 pounds of salmon and halibut filets. Then there is Caleb our deckhand. Caleb does everything from baiting lines to netting fish to cleaning the catch and making awesome sandwiches made to order. We are very grateful to meet such a fine hardworking young man. I highly recommend this family run Inn/charter to everyone. You absolutely cannot go wrong and you will have an enjoyable experience.

The Wildlife 1. THE FISHING-the fishing was great. We caught salmon, halibut, cod, crabs, and shrimp. We took home 7 boxes of fish! I'll be eating pretty for awhile. 2. The Staff-the staff here are amazing and work their asses off, especially Captain Josh (our captain for three days). He was a work horse. He ensured we caught our limits everyday or at least tried really hard to. Not an easy feat considering we were 2 old guys and a female. He was also better than google with the amount of information he was able to share about Alaska, fishing, and all the wildlife we saw. Overall the staff make this trip an amazing experience. They try so hard to make sure you have a good time. 3. The food-yum, yum, yum. Kathy fed us so well. My favorites were the crab, clam chowder, and halibut, but there was also baby back ribs and prime rib. They fixed a made to order lunch each day from a variety of sandwiches and there was all you could eat fresh baked cookies, hot drinks, etc., etc., etc. You definitely won't go hungry here. 4. The Wildlife-Alaska really is beautiful. I was sad to leave. We saw killer whales, a humpback whale, bald eagles, and bears. Thanks to our captain we were able to get really close, too. I loved, loved, loved this place. I hope I'll be able to go back again someday. In the meantime I will recommend it to everyone I know, because it was that fantastic of a trip.

Can't believe I'm already at review #500. That's a whole lot of restaurants, hotels, and…read morebusinesses I've reviewed since October 2006 (and not one of those review involves a UYE, political statement, gas station, Walgreens, Walmart, etc, but legitimate businesses that I've or someone else in my party paid for.) Damn I spend a lot of money... So for #500, I'm choosing probably one of my most memorial vacations I've done in awhile and doing a review of False Island Lodge. Located about 1.5 hour boat ride out of Sitka Alaska, False Island Lodge sits about a 10 minute boat ride from some of the major fishing grounds of Sitka. The best part about this lodge is that the only other people out here are the commercial fisherman, during my 5 day stay here I didn't see another sport fishing boat around. This makes for an ideal situation if you're going after BIG FISH. False Island Lodge is actually an old logging barge converted into a sportsman lodge. They have about 5 rooms with bunk beds so can hold up to about 20 guests plus they have rooms for their staff as well. For literally being out in the middle of no where, they have all the modern conveniences you would find in anywhere. The lodge has everything you could need from your basics of running hot and cold water and flushing toilets to a flat screen satellite TV and hot tub. Only thing missing was WiFi and a regular phone (you could use their satellite phone if needed) and to be honest I didn't miss having any of those things. They don't have a "chef" but they have a darn good cook that made eating here quite a pleasure with plenty of it including an all you can eat crab feed. I gained about 4 pounds on this vacation. Another bonus is that they provide all the gear for you, so you don't need to take your rods or Gundens with you if you want to use their gear. They run 29 foot boats with heads and the fishing grounds are as close as a 10 minute boat ride but some of the favorite holes are about an hour. During the time here I saw a wide range of wildlife such as Bald Eagles, Bears, Humpback Whales, and Orcas and in our boat caught about 15 different types of fish including two halibuts that were 116 & 164 and several kings that were 25+. We also did some shrimping and crabbing too and brought home 9 boxes of meat which equals to 450 lbs. Overall words can not express what a great time my family had at False Island Lodge. This is definitely one of those diamonds in the roughs and if you're looking for an exceptional Alaska Fishing Experience, this is one of the top lodges I've ever been too. Perfect 5 star rating and hope to go back sometime soon.

Continental breakfast is advertised and all that was offered is bagels and toast, no protein which was expected with the continental breakfast expected. License not included in package price and limits on fishing not discussed prior to boarding the boat. Also, package states unlimited packaging of fish caught, but we were charged $10 per box of fish. Again, charged without any communication of these fees. Group of 2 treated considerably different than group of 12 on the trip. If you do not go fishing and stay at the lodge you will not be provided with lunch (and have no way to get food otherwise). The large group (a few people that stayed also) was provided lunch after group of 2 was told they would not get lunch because they stayed at the lodge instead of fishing that day. Also told new group was coming in early and we would have to be relocated to a hotel before our trip was over. This was very upsetting. As we paid for the entire stay prior to arrival. Paid over 3k per person, airfare and tip to boat captain, will not support this business again.

We went to several areas to see more amazing whales, salmon jumping out of the water, otters and a waterfall! We were able to sit inside or go on the front or back decks for photos or to hang out a bit and observe the natural beauty around us. As a fellow nature lover, It was fun that Captain Gary was excited to see the whales as well even after having grown up in Sitka and seeing them many times before.  He was a wealth of knowledge about the wildlife and area, plus relaxed and easy going.  I appreciate the details about the whales names and that he recently found out how some were related.
