    Binky the Clown

    Binky the Clown

I hired Binky for my daughter's 5th birthday party. I was actually pretty nervous about it since…read moremy interaction with Binky had been a bit unprofessional in the weeks leading up to the party. I initially sent her a message through her website and after a week of her not responding, I sent her an email through her email address. Still no response, so I called. She didn't give a great explanation for why she didn't write back, but I booked the party anyway. A few weeks later I sent her another email confirming the details, and again she didn't write back for days, so I called. She claimed she just got the email that morning (but didn't write back for some reason). We updated the party details on the phone, and the last time I wanted to change something, I just called again. Though she was responsive by phone, she never once emailed back. I would have appreciated some confirmation in writing. So I was nervous that she wouldn't even show up on the day of the party. But she did and she was wonderful! I had her do magic and balloon animals (no face painting) for 9 kids. All the magic tricks but one were a hit, the kids were engaged the whole time and she did a fabulous job of trying to call up as many different kids as she could to help with tricks, while giving special attention to the birthday girl. Her character was perfectly silly. The balloon animals/objects were also wonderful and each child got his/her own customized piece. She also left us with coloring pages and a small baggie of trinkets and a small piece of candy for each kid. The biggest disappointment was that she cut it short by 15 min! I paid full price for an hour of entertainment (no discount for having one less kid-9 instead of 10) and she didn't fill the time. I'm not sure if she just didn't budget her time well, or if there was another reason it was short, but that was definitely not cool. She could have done more magic or made each kid another balloon piece. If I do a clown again for another party, I'll probably hire someone else. Otherwise, I will definitely talk to her in advance about filling the time better.

Kimo, how do I love thee? For your bizarre glowing eyed skeletons, and your red velvet drapes. And…read moreis it haunted? Hmmmm. We may never know. Gem of downtown Albuquerque, the Kimo theatre is home to Burlesque, live theater, comedy shows, and the silver screen. Yes. All of these things. I love when they do film festivals. Nights upon nights of old film noir and classics. And every February, Southwest Burlesque makes me want to quit my job and become a dancer. The Nutcracker every December. Ah, the memories. Literally, my only complaint is the seating. It's very old school. Which is fine, but those comfy new-fangled seats in the new theaters have me (and my tush) spoiled. Hint - restrooms are on the sides down a hallway that doesn't seem like it belongs to the building.

Mayor Berry had a real silver screen installed as well as new carpet to compliment the well preserved vintage space. The Kimo is a destination for all lovers of the arts. It is host to book readings, poetry, and movie showings. For tonight's event, we were treated to Buster Keaton's "The General" with the Alloy Orchestra playing the score live for just $0.50 per ticket with free water, popcorn, and cake. (Concessions typically not included in movie ticket pricing.) The movie was outstanding and the Alloy Orchestra was a once in a lifetime experience. The Kimo has so many of these incredible events that people need to know more about. I know our family will be attending more of them!
