There certainly isn't the slight stale, dead feeling you get at some Indian restaurants. They've got a few candles though and it's nicely lit, so all the metal doesn't make it seem too sterile. A reasonably adventurous menu, though you'll still find chicken tika massala and the other usual suspects. It's about nine pounds for a main and some rice. Probably a bit more than you'll pay for a take away, but I'd say worth it for a smart convivial setting. The foods generally of a slightly higher quality than your typical takeaway as well. Helpfully they put spiciness ratings next to the dishes, which I recommend you heed. Oh! Calcutta! takes a slightly different approach than your usual Indian and is much the better for it.

The staff are really friendly and the food was lovely - getting as hot as my Teflon-throated companions wanted - but nothing so different that pulls me across town to come back here often. To see the Observer award and the eco-focus made me want to try it even more. We got the chicken curry thali - possibly the only meat on the menu?! which comes with dall and many side dishes. That's not to say that the Montpelier Thali Café hasn't got a charm of its own - it certainly has. Being the first one in this ever-burgeoning chain, a lot of creative energy went into the place. The décor is pretty unusual, uber-kitsch, and colourful, and the setting is as intimate as Bristol dining gets, often feeling like the rest of your family, (if it's a large one), have descended on you for the evening. Great! The food probably needs no introduction... it's English style South Indian food at its best!

That reassured me I had picked somewhere decent, and I wasn't disappointed. I'll run through the essentials first. We got our food in about twenty minutes. It was still hot by the time we'd walked home and came to about twenty two quid for three of us. So pretty good, although it might have been a bit cheaper. The food was pretty standard Indian takeaway fare - terribly moreish and violently coloured curries from liberal use of colouring. I had the lamb tika and would definitely recommend it. Again in the spirit of Indian takeaways there were complimentary popodoms and slightly pathetic salad (I suppose I shouldn't complain if it's free, really). I don't think this is somewhere I would specifically choose to go out for a meal, but fine for our purposes of getting something quick and tasty that evening.

I'd say it might be slightly better for a take away than a meal though, as I was impressed with the food but less so with the service and ambience of the place. It was a Sunday night when we came in, and we were the only people there for the duration, which meant the service could have been a little more friendly than it was. Also, despite an empty restaurant we felt surprisingly squashed, as the tables don't allow much room for manoeuvre. Despite this though, the food was good - I had a Nawab, which is a mixture of chicken and lamb cooked with tomatoes and yogurt. The sizes were good, and shared a pilau rice and naan bread which was more than enough for 2 people. Definite thumbs up for the food quality, not so sure about the restaurant itself though.

Took 2 and a quarter hours to deliver, with me phoning them every 45 mins. Each time I was told to wait five more minutes. When the food did turn up I was over charged. When I phoned up to complain I was offered a full refund. A week went by, no refund. When I phoned up and asked about the refund they had no idea what I was talking about. It took TWO WEEKS for them to sort it out and I had to constantly pester them. In the end after A LOT of phone calls I was offered a refund in the form of curry. When I phoned to claim my free curry yet again it was a world of hassle. It involved about 4 phones calls and also took 2 and a quarter hours to deliver. To top it off this time time round the food was cold, overcooked and the wrong order. The food was actually delivered by the manger, who denied the fact that it took over 2 hours to deliver. When I offered to show him my phone with all the times of the calls logged he said he didn't want to talk about it and drove off. Overall the phone manner of the staff (and also the behaviour of the manager in person) was dismissive and incredibly rude.
