After living in LA near J-town you kind of expect a level of greatness in ramen. Unfortunately I did not find it in Germany, but Takumni isn't bad. I mean, I'd come here again if I couldn't find anything else to fulfill my warm soup craving, but on the cold rainy night that I came here, it was just perfect. We ordered some gyoza (tasty but small and sooo pricey - 4.80 for 5 pieces) and three different types of ramen (shoyu, and the two specials: tonkotsu and tokuoyo shoyu). They were all pretty good but a bit on the salty side even after we requested two of them to be with less salt. You can order extra noodles which is nice for the guys that need some more substance. There was a lot of anticipation. I was able to skip about 10 people in line because I was by myself instead of with a group. Still, I watched the chefs make food for about 40 minutes before mine was ready. I was reeeally looking forward to it. It was good, but unfortunately not the best ramen I've had. This place is a god send. After eating German fare for a few days straight, our group was craving something Asian, and we took a few transfers to get to Takumi, but well worth it! Wasn't expecting this sort of spot in Munich. The feel of the place is authentic Japanese ramenshop, with an open kitchen concept for viewing pleasure. I went with the Takumi Speziale with shoyu base. Really liked the broth. Chasu pieces were bigger than your average ramen chasu too. Ramen cooked just right. It doesn't come with the soft-boiled egg, but in this case, I'd say it's okay to skip it. The egg is fairly normal, nothing too special about it. I tried it with the miso base as well, and I gotta say, I'd go with the miso next time! I also got the salmon/trout roe rice bowl to go along with the ramen. I say salmon/trout, because... I don't know what it is? Forgot to take out the translator and forgot to ask haha. We also got some gyozas to share and gyozas were spot on. There's Kirin on draft so if you want to talk a break from them German brews, perfect. We waited about 30 minutes around 8pm, not too bad since the place isn't that big. Takumi is really hard for me to rate because I'm used to eating ramen in Cali. But the ramen here is actually decent and have pretty good firmness. The soup base is also well prepared, my favorite as usual is the salt based. And now for the all important egg and Shoyu..the eggs are well cooked but they always come cold, and the Shoyu is too lean and dry for my taste. Don't get me wrong, it's totally enjoyable and I've been there already a few times. As far as I know it's also the best ramen in Munich which makes me a little sad. But to ask for really authentic ramen in Bavaria is just too much. Place is always packed for dinner and has a pretty good ramen bar feel. Some of the most authentic ramen I've had outside of Japan. Takumi seems very popular with Japanese visitors and expats as well. Great selection of ramen. The shiyo ramen is my personal favorite, but the miso ramen is also excellent. IMHO it's also a good sign they don't try to do sushi to lure in more people. They don't need to; they specialize in ramen and do that very, very well. Try the gyoza, they're so good! They also have a nice selection of small plates that aren't easy to find in most Japanese restaurants, such as ikura (salmon roe) served over warm sticky rice with a sheet of seaweed. It's sort of like a deconstructed onigiri. Small selection of popular Japanese beer too. It can get very busy even on weeknights, so be prepared to wait. read more

After having read some of the reviews and looking at the photos online I thought I had finally found a place that I could call my Asian home in Europe and unfortunately that search will continue having had lunch here today :-( Having travelled and worked in Asia and Australia for years I was spoiled for choice when it came to Asian food and in the last two years of being in Europe I have been yearning for that rich textural Asian flavour and experience. The Gyoza here is excellent and served nice and warm. The speziale miso ramen that I had for lunch tasted ok but lacked the texture. I am not a fan of soups full of cabbage, pok choy and bean sprouts when you could have some many different textural items like rice cake, snow peas, baby corn and so on alongside the meats. Also the lack of vegetarian choices was a bit disappointing specially with the Gyoza and just one soup out of the whole menu. I was also disappointed at the prices €35 for two for lunch is a bit rich considering what was in the bowl. I am afraid I won't be rushing back here. I am a huge fan of ramen and I'm pretty sure this is one of the few ramen restaurants in Munich. This place feels authentic. I've had ramen in Japan and Los Angeles and I am also Japanese too so I'm a bit picky when it comes to my ramen. The staff is Japanese, the menu is German/Japanese, and the set up has a very Japanese vibe. I ordered gyoza and the Sapporo tonkatsu style ramen. I really liked my ramen. The noodles were firm and not too soft. The broth was pretty good as well. Normally I do prefer the tonkatsu broth to be a little thicker and a bit more "porky" tasting, but I still enjoyed mine today. We went on a Sunday night around 8pm and the line was out the door. We waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated. The staff is friendly. I think most of them spoke better English (and Japanese of course) than German, which was nice for me. Delicious ramen but you're eating it in a sauna. No A/C, which is common and acceptable, but there is not circulation in the dining room and no fan. The kitchen, with huge pots of boiling broth, is not separated from the dining room so you will sweat while you eat your ramen. In fact, the waitresses wear towels as headbands it is so hot. The queue can be quite long, packing out the waiting area and leaving patrons standing in the cold (quite literally), but I'd say hang in there. We both got the Tonkotsu with the egg. The broth was rich but not oily, the noodles firm but not hard, and pork was pretty tasty as well. We also got the gyozas, which were great. Crispy on the bottom and soft on the top. Found this place thanks to Yelp. I was a little hesitant at first because I went to a Vietnamese restaurant that was underwhelming from what I've had in the past. Also I feel like Asian food isn't as comparable as the Asian food from Los Angeles. However, Takumi didn't let me down. I was very pleased to have their potstickers which were delicious. I had the Tokatsu Ramen and it was made just the same way as in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. The ramen at Takumi Munich is very good, as well as the amazing gyoza and good karaage. But it's the extremely inflexible and passive-aggressive service from most of the staff that I cannot accept. Yesterday I went with a friend to Takumi for lunch. Waited 30 minutes to be seated, which in itself is fine in a small and popular establishment like this one. But it was the perfunctory and inefficient slowness of the waitress cleaning the tables and getting them ready that I had an issue with. Even after 3 tables were cleaned it took forever for us to be seated. As I've mentioned, the food itself is good, but one doesn't go to a restaurant just for the food. It's the whole experience, from good service to feeling good when leaving that a customer expects from a good eatery. At most ramen places I've been to, the concept of kaedama (requesting extra noodles when you still want more and have broth left in the bowl) has been the norm and even encouraged. At Takumi Munich, every request that is not stated on the menu is too difficult and impossible, and is met with the standard response 'It's not possible, sorry'. So, when I asked for a separate portion of noodles, I was told 'das geht leider nicht' by the waitress, who looked at me in disbelief, as if I'd asked her to save the world. Considering the price bracket of this place, one would expect more flexibility AND better service. They have a customer card, which you can get stamped for either free gyoza or free noodles, depending on how many stamps you get. But you can get stamps only on weekdays (not on weekends or national holidays). I had a couple of stamped cards which I wanted merged into one card, but again I was met with the 'sorry, not possible' line. Also ridiculous is the fact that they conveniently hide the cards behind a large display screen, so that one finds it only when one is looking for the card. Rather deceitful, if you ask me. Why have them at all, in that case??? I've been to the original Takumi in Düsseldorf, where service, quality and quantity of food is far superior to that of its Munich equivalent. I only go for the food at Takumi Munich, as it is the only redeeming feature of this particular place. Then I leave as soon as possible. read more
