Amazing food. I go here maybe two or three times a month and it always hits. The prices are reasonable and you get so much. I normally end up leaving half for the next day anyway so I get two meals for one. The wait time tends to be around 20-30 min and you can't eat inside. Those are the only downsides. We have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got around to it. The service was good, took about 45 minutes for our food to be ready, take out only. We did order our food with spice level 6/10, which was EXTREMELY spicy, like painfully hard to eat. But the flavors of the curries were amazing. - Chicken tikka masala (4.5/5): this was so delicious, love the flavors and the aroma. Perfect creaminess and not too sweet. Love dipping the naan in this. It was pretty spicy though so had to have it in smaller portions. Normally I like medium spice level, but this 6/10 tasted like a 9/10 or burning hot. Either way it was still so yummy. - Lamb vindaloo (3.5/5): this was also yummy, a bit spicier at 6/10. Haven't tried the food yet, but based on the lack of cleanliness, I will never order food from here again. The owner had on a dirty shirt. Windows were dirty. Floor was disgusting. I hand the lady 2 twenty dollar bills and she didn't give me my change claiming I only gave her a $20 and a $10. I really want to like this place I was a bit concerned when entering the restaurant and the filthy glass on windows and front door. Inside I found grease and dust covered sneeze guard glass at front counter, kitchen door hanging off its hinges and just general disrepair. If the owners cant be bothered to do simple cleaning and repair in front of restaurant I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like! I turned around and left. After eating Taj Mahal several different times, I feel like my first experience was a bit too harsh. It might have been a bad day for them. Tip #1: Ordering the dishes a la carte, although more expensive compared to the lunch buffets, will result in a tastier meal. Tip #2: Go to the lunch buffets at 12:30 PM, when they've really started putting out their food. Don't go after 1:30 PM ish. Tip #3: Go to the lunch buffets on a weekday. For some reason I feel like their weekday buffets taste better. I have been here three times - once in December 2012 for dinner at the old location, once in December 2013 for dinner at the new location, and once in March 2014 for lunch buffet. Each and every time the food was consistently amazing. I would say this is the best Indian restaurant that I have been to in the U.S. I have been to over 50 all across the nation so that's saying a lot. Every dish I have tried is perfect (chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, dal makhni, punjabi dahi curry, chicken curry, palak paneer, aloo saag, chana masala, and more) and has been consistently cooked to perfection each time - even on the buffet. The staff has always been friendly to me and my dining companions. The naan is so soft and fresh - just perfect. Also the mango lassi is a great way to finish off your meal. Shame on this place for serving food that would barely pass for dog food (and us for wasting $45). Took 90 minutes to receive our order. Rice was chunky and bland, as if it had been reheated. Naan is supposed to be thick, fluffy, chewy. Theirs was thin and greasy. Mixed tandoori grille was 5 pieces of overcooked meat, including a sausage that looked phallic. Vegetarian platter had curry that was spicy (nowhere in the dish description does it mention spicy) as well as other small sides that were barely edible. Asked for iced tea but got coke instead. The last straw was finding a strand of hair in one of the meats. First time and last time ordering from here. Should have read the other bad reviews first. Run the other direction! read more

Really fantastic! When I am in the area, I always go to the buffet (well, pre-COVID), but it is always delicious! The staff is friendly and the price is good for when you are a student, or just broke like me. I would recommend the Tikka Masala, Gulab Jaman, and the Biriyani. Stopped in to sit down and enjoy a nice meal. All of us ordered separate dishes but I'm hind site we could have ordered 2-3 separate orders and shared between the 4 of us. The spice levels range from 1-10. I ordered mine at 7 and the spice just made for extra heat and not more flavor and I really enjoy spicy food. I would recommend staying at a 4-5 if you like a little spice or a lot and there will be just the right amount of heat without being too much. There wasn't anyone else dining in when we were there ( might have been because of the football game) and might have been why we got our food quickly. I wanted to give less stars but this is all that I can do. When I took my boyfriend out for his birthday dinner I was not impressed. The place looks like nobody gives a crap about that place. The glass was looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years and if it was then it was half assed. The floors weren't swept up especially under the booths. The main entrance you can tell that's where the main foot traffic is. The floor looks like it needs to be scrubbed for a few days or pressure washed. There is no door to the kitchen so you can basically see the mess that is back there. There was a single person working up front and my boyfriend told him that we were going to eat there. He gave us a look like he was pissed off about it. So he walked away to play on his phone while we looked through the menu. I'm sorry but THIS IS NOT AUTHENTIC INDIAN CUISINE if it was then there would be no beef options because of the culture. He comes back takes our order and we get our drinks. We sat for an hour before we got our food but all the DoorDash and grub hub orders were filled asap. So we sat at a dirty booth and a sticky table and waited for our food. They had two TVs and only one was off. When we got our food we had normal silverware but paper plates and napkins from Walmart. I thought the food was ok but I never had any Indian type of food but my boyfriend said it was decent. By the time we were getting ready to leave there were people that were waiting 15 minutes or more for the employee to finally decide to walk to the front. We got a bag for my left overs because I couldn't eat it all and left. My boyfriend told me that we will never be back. Indias house is where he will go. read more

I called them because I thought they accidentally gave me the wrong dish, but come to find out, they didn't even know what Haleem was...AND started asking ME for the recipe. I've made several attempts to like Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine. When they first opened, they weren't too bad but subsequent attempts to eat there resulted in what could only be characterized as dining debacles out of an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Last two attempts, we had to just leave. I will detail my last experience for you: Went in for lunch buffet at 1:15PM. Sat in the only available booth which was full of trash and plates with my girlfriend and stared at said trash and plates for about 5 minutes while the guy in the dining room did everything ranging from filling people's water to busing other tables which were not occupied. After a long and awkward period of waiting, I went over to the man and asked if he would remove the refuse from our table because we had money and wanted to exchange it for food-stuffs from the buffet. The man looked confused and went to the back to retrieve a woman who came to our table and asked us, and I quote, "would you like me to wipe the table for you?" -- to which I replied, yes.. yes.. I would like that very much... We went to the buffet finally and everything ranging from such staples as naan / rice to every curry was empty and/or dried/caked to the sides of the warming trays: i.e. they were trying to make it to 2:30pm (end of lunch) without refilling the food. We had to leave -- there wasn't any food to eat at the buffet? At $10 bucks a head, do you really want to pay to scrape some tins? Walked down to Olive Cafe, it was tasty. Had similar terrible experiences at Taj Mahal, no less than 3 times. To put it flatly, this is the worst Indian restaurant ... ever. This place WILL be out of business, it's just a matter of time. Used to go here a lot with friends at their previous location across the street and always had a good meal. Have been ordering takeout from here recently due to pregnancy, bedrest, and having a newborn. Tonight, though, I think we are done. I placed and order and my husband drove up into town to get it because we were quoted 35-40 min and we live nearly in Ashland. When he arrived, there was no on there to help him, he had to wander around to get someone and when the woman who took the order from me on the phone talked to him, she claimed the food wasn't ready because I had just called it in 3 minutes ago. My husband argued with her after confirming this was our order (since that seemed off). She said it was and they'd rush the food out. He gets home with the food and we're super disappointed. I always would order from them to make two meals out of their butter chicken (which is actually really tasty) but this time, it was 90% sauce and 10% chicken. For $15.00, this wasn't even enough actual meat to make one dinner out of let alone a dinner and lunch like I usually do. Not worth the money. I called to explain what the problem was and asked if they could check with the cook. They called me back and said this was a "whole chicken breast". If so, it was the smallest bird on earth. The lady also told me that she was sure she could have them put "extra chicken" in but that there would be an extra charge. My husband had plenty of food but told me after we called and after he finished eating that the pepper included in his kebab still had a sticker on it. We ordered lamb korma, garlic naan, and daal soup. The food was fantastic, but beware... "mild" will burn the Midwestern American's tongue right off. Still, the food was fragrant, flavorful, and delivered in a reasonable time. We had movers show up and keep us occupied, and the food stayed fresh, tasty, and hot for 2 hours. I am happy to be able to write a better review for this restaurant. We gave the restaurant another chance and found that the owner/manager has hired at least one (I can only say one because he's the only one we saw) very quick and conscientious waiter. He admitted to being new to the restaurant, but was still able to give suggestions and explain the general ingredients and flavor profiles of the dishes. This time we were greeted by our waiter within a moment of him seeing us enter (this can be tricky, due to the layout of the restaurant) were seated and had menus almost immediately. We ordered the "Feast for Two" and a couple of appetizers. Just as last time, the food was fantastic and the service was so good that even with time to eat until we thought we might burst, put all the left overs in take home boxes, eat desert, and pay we still were back in our car to leave an hour after being seated in the restaurant. read more

The restroom stinks and was out of hand gel or paper towels. The plates and glasses they serve are not properly cleansed. Apart from the above facts - it takes a while before you can get your food. Taj Mahal features slowpoke service and decent eats, but the flavors are a bit muted. You won't spit out your food into your napkin, but everything seems a bit watered down - both in terms of taste, and the texture and consistency of the sauces. My mango lassi tasted suspect and slightly chemical. (This seems to be a theme with all the mango lassis I've had in the past year or so. Maybe it's the universe's way of telling me not to drink them, ever.) In the end, India's House a few blocks over on Broadway wins the battle of Columbia Indian eateries. Their service is what kills them for me. I ordered pick up once, I was told it would be a 30 minute wait. It turned into an hour wait for my food. Every time my friend and I go to eat there we know we better not have anywhere to be for the next two hours. The staff seem almost angry you're there, glasses go unfilled for long periods of time. It was much hotter than the Indian or Thai food in Jefferson City at a level 5. I loved it, it was just too hot for my husband as we had intended to share our entrees.
