After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

They were warm and attentive in the beginning, but then forgot about you once you're main courses were out. We were sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for the bill and we weren't even asked how the food was and if they can get us refills. So they get a 3/5 for service, and they seemed too well staff in cooking counter, we're talking like 10 people back there and 3-4 waitresses. High Yield: A Pakistani, Middle Eastern Indian fusion restaurant that does a spectacular job on spices and capturing the tastes of these cultures, but with ghosting hospitality that needs improvement, easy on wallet, and warm atmosphere Details: What we ordered 1. Chicken Madras- They claim this is the spiciest dish offered here. True- takes a couple of bites for that spice to truly finally hit you. Great for those who are trying to truly go for a spicy and tasteful dish. I highly recommend this outta all the chickens on here. Tikka is a little too tomatoey, Bhuna has a yogurty tang to it, and this is straight up spicy spice if you like it this way. Chicken breast with a sauce not creamy but heavy in spices. Very good and well done. I highly approve. Order a side of roti/naan and dip it in. The madras and bhuna do not come with rice/bread btw, so I recommend you order a bread to dip with 2. Lamb Madhu- Rice is a little flavorless and it's a little more tough than the typical basmati rice that you see- aka not fluffy. The lamb was not bad though. It's lamb on bone compared to briyani where the meat is not on the bone. Way too much rice in my opinion but if you're a big rice eater, go for it. If your company ordered a madras/curry they can mooch off your rice a little ;) 3. Bhuna Chicken- a yogurty kinda curry. You can definitely taste the tartness of the yogurt- a soothing and comfortable curry to order if you're someone who doesn't want something too spicy or tomatoey. Highly recommend. Also need a roti/bread or mooch off a briyani's rice if you get this. Well done, however. Service: Ok, this is where they lose their 5 star rating. They come off as warm and super attentive at first. And you're pleased. However, once that main course appears, they ghost you. Never saw our waiter again. Didn't even come by and ask how we were doing, check for refills, or even come with check even when were clearly done for a while. They had excellent service but seemed to ignore you after you get your food. I checked multiple times and it wasn't like they were understaffed... rather they had like 10 people preparing food, 2-3 people chilling back behind that counter, and like 4-5 waiters for about 20-25 tables... so I don't understand how they can ghost. I recommend they step up the service or else will sacrifice their quality of their restaurant.. If you're in a rush, definitely put pressure for them to get your check or else yyou'll NEVER get it.

Do not under any account go to this restaurant if you like a curry after 12 pints of lager. Don't…read morego if your idea of Indian food is eye wateringly hot chicken phal, nor if you like blood red Tikka Massala. This is, to its loyal and discerning followers, by a considerable distance the best Indian food that you will find in Leicester. Family run, by a gujarati family displaced from Kenya more than 30 years ago, it conforms to the highest standards. I have been going there for 15 years and can say, with total honesty, that I have never had a bad meal. With the wonderfully courteous Dinesh looking after the 40 cover restaurant, which has been recently fully refurbished, and brother Ashok masterminding the cooking, a visit is more akin to a visit to an exclusive dining club than your regular curry house. Meat, fish and vegetarian options are imaginatively and stylishly prepared and served, and Ashok will happily cook to order if your particular favourite is not on the extensive menu. This place does not get awards, or feature in guides because it doesn't need to. The do not need to solicit cheap publicity. Beloved by Leicester's Indian and English communities alike, it is a good idea to book because it can be packed - and not always only on Friday and Saturday. I cannot recommend highly enough, because if you want a truly high quality meal (not the cheapest, but that should not be an issue) then this is the one. With starters, sweets and a few beers, it can run to thirty or forty pounds a head. But it is money well spent.
