The ambience is lovely, quaint and warm. Fresh fish of the day can be seen in the front window, skilled chefs are working away and a couple of water tanks for the live seafood are visible from the dining room. I had a crab soup which was surprisingly delicious, similar to a lobster bisque. Fresh bread started us off, warm from the oven and soft inside. I chose a special of the day, the fish was tender and flavourful, melting off the bone and infused with lemon and capers. My partners dish of hake with risotto was absolutely delicious, something I'd order if I were to go back. All In all a lovely dining experience in a scenic location. Make sure you book to avoid disappointment!

I visited this restaurant with friends after one of them highly recommended it. However, we were…read moresadly very disappointed both with the food and the service. It was a very busy Saturday night but we were seated at 7pm, before the rush started. It was over an hour before we received our meal. During this time we saw an endless stream of people being led to tables and takeaway meals going out. When our meals did arrive, one was the wrong order (but he ate it anyway as he was starving and didn't want to wait another hour), another had almost no taste ( we think they didn't add the spice) and mine had the appearance that it had been overcooked in the microwave as the sauce was dry on the plate at the edges. It was a King Prawn Korma but tasted like coconut soup with very little spice. The food and drinks were plonked onto the table so hard that drinks were almost spilled. When we tried to point out in a friendly way that we had been waiting for over an hour and that the food was below standard, we were told "sorry but we are busy". We did pay the full price as we didn't want to cause a fuss but needless to say, we will not be visiting again and we are now telling our friends about the bad experience so we don't think they will be visiting either. I don't make a habit out of complaining but the evening was totally spoilt by something that could have been managed better.

I do remember the food being very good and one of my first experiences of proper food. Since the new owners took over, the standards have only gone up. They've kept their AA Rosette by sticking to good, locally sourced food done without too much fuss. I took my staff here for the annual post-Christmas meal. The place is favoured by older folk and the setting always reminds me of being in someone's lounge rather than a restaurant. The building is essentially just another old cottage in the village which has been converted into a restaurant, which brings it's own charm with low ceilings and exposed wood. It also comes across as fairly unpretentious. We chose from the set menu which was £25 or so for three courses. Nicely balanced menu, which is always good when you have a choice of 4 for each course - it makes decisions easy as well. The restaurant was fairly full by the time our food came, and the service was always pretty slick but relaxed enough for a Sunday lunch. Everyone enjoyed their meal, washed down with a few bottles of the house wine - a very respectable Sauvignon Blanc. In summary, a decent place. Probably slightly above the average in terms of cost for the area (especially for a village), but it's definitely worth it. Especially when you consider how many times I've paid that much and had a very average meal.

The Balti House is extremely popular, especially on the weekends, so if you are thinking of going the best advice as ever is to book in advance.
