This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. This is one of those places that reminds you how small we used to be - I'm only 5ft 7 and I stoop through the worn wooden doors. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95). The restaurant opening times are Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9.30pm. They also offer bar meals between 12 and 2 pm Mondays to Saturdays and evening meals Monday to Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

I think I have the same playlist on Spotify. The absolute game changer though was the FISH & CHIPS. OMG.. I didn't realize how effin delicious this could be without being too greasy! . The haddock was perfect. The chips were perfect. The mushy peas were perfect. This has been, so far, the BEST fish & chips is all of the UK. And I love F&Cs.. and I'm A foodie.. so that's saying a lot. I think the only possible thing that can compete with TSS F&Cs are the Scottish Cod Fish & Chips at this same restaurant. And yeeeesssss, we will be back!

We got there a few hours before closing time and couldn't get a table right away - we were told to come back in an hour but we asked if it would still be possible to get their fish & chips. They asked how many of us would want it and all 5 of us did. Ha! Luckily, they were able to hold enough for us to come back once a table was open. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside. The chips were tasty and the mushy peas were actually good which I wasn't expecting! I'd travel all the way back to England just for this meal at the Scallop Shell.

If you like good food but don't like the theatrics of fine dining then you could do a lot worse…read morethan this place. I selected three courses from the main menu whilst my partner choose three courses from the special menu that is a retrospective celebration of their 25th Anniversary. The selections available on both menus was varied with nice additional touches such as alcohol free mocktails for drivers. The food was fresh, of a high quality and well portioned, to the extent that you could enjoy the three courses without feeling stuffed to the gunnels. Preparation and presentation were above normal and it's clear that the kitchen team know what they are doing. The only course that was anything close to a bit of a let down was my dessert, which was basically a slice of loaf cake with a couple of slices of "caramelised" oranges - they treated for all the world like a couple of slices of regular quality oranges to me. Whilst not cheap the regular menu isn't overly expensive either. A fair price for good food. The 25th Anniversary menu was great value though at £25 for 3 courses and a glass of perfectly acceptable fizz. The only changes I would make would be to update the printed menus which would be more at home in a pub. Also I'd increase the space separating the tables to allow diners to feel a touch more secluded. The restaurant is decidedly informal, far from huge and a little on the snug side for a truly intimate meal - but it is definitely a small, good quality restaurant right at the heart of Weymouth's quayside and one that I hope to visit again. **TIPS** Book! Even on a Tuesday night at the beginning of May it was busy, obviously loved by the locals. Also, a bit of a strange practice, but they don't allow you to add a tip to your card payment, so have some cash on hand if you want to leave a thank you.
