Taiwanese Oyster Pancake. A classic at Taiwanese night markets!
    Sandra C.

I grew up in Taiwan, so of course I had to try out the Taiwanese food in Sydney :) Always craving for some Taiwanese food! Taiwan Ganbei was the first Taiwanese restaurant I tried out in Sydney. In general it was decent- good price, standard food, and good atmosphere. Good price: Everything was very affordable. There were single dishes ($8 - $12) and also combos that you can get for less than $20. Standard food: I grew up eating authentic Taiwanese so my standards are pretty high (oops sorry :P). I tried the Original Beef Noodle Soup and the Taiwanese Oyster pancake. I really liked the Beef Noodle Soup! Especially the noodles- smooth and spring- on point ;) The Oyster pancake was not ask good though. There was too much starch and felt pretty heavy. However the oysters were really flavorable :) Good atmosphere: Taiwan Ganbei has a modern and neat atmosphere. Not decor heavy, but just right for a casual dinner with friends. They were playing Taiwanese music videos on big screen TV. Could be distracting at times (they were playing really intriguing music videos the night I went haha), but for the most part it was entertaining :) If this is your first time trying out Taiwanese food, this is a great place to start. Good Taiwanese food and the vibe is also very Taiwanese :P Ideal for casual group lunches/dinners too!

Great place with an extensive menu. Has it all. The portions are good for the price. We had steamed cod ($15), basil pipis($19), sesame oil chicken soup($10) and Lemon Yakut tea ($5). The cod was sweet although as cod is, a bit fatty. Pipis had a great flavour, not fresh but not much of the seafood is if you think about it. These two dishes were the recommended popular dishes. Sesame soup was very subtle in flavour. The chicken was tender however the whole bowl was a little bland. There were a lot of noodles which became a bit soft in the metal bowl held by a wooden rack. Quite a big portion for one person.Yakut drink was really just a lemon tea with a tinge of sour dairy. Our bill was $50, not a bad meal - seafood was good. Had good atmosphere and the waitresses were nice. Kinda like a dessert bar feel with substantial food.

There's a self serve kiosk to order and pay, then you scan a number barcode and sit down. It was all a really simple procedure and I like the concept. Once I sat down and got situated, the food came out almost instantaneously and looked glamorous. All the rice soaked up the juices of the fatty, succulent pieces of pork; and it was absolutely delectable. Never a boring bite!

She pulses and glows, and sends wafts of pungent perfume drifting down the street to envelop me in her heady musk. Finally ate there last night. Was fresh from the gym, cricket training and no lunch, and was so famished I coulda eaten the eyes out of a dead camel. I was barely coherent by this point. I just needed food, tasty food, and a table full of it. Bao Dao delivered. In spades. Big ones. Cheap ones. Hot, steaming, spicy, delicious ones. You order off a big plastic picture menu, there's a ton of small-sized dishes at ridiculous prices - most everything is between $4 and $7, with sides around $3. So you just point at about a thousand things that look good and 5 minutes later you're heffing in like John Goodman at a buffet. I don't like to blow my own horn (unless I'm alone and something with Mandy Moore is on TV), but I ordered the $hit out of that place. Everything that came was epic, from the pulled pork with sweet peanut rolls to the oily lamb broth to the fried coriander chicken to the suuuuper spicy dumplings with pickled cucumber to the pork sauce rice with century egg. Guh. Getting giddy just thinking about it. So go. Try. The Taiwanese girl is waiting. She wants you inside her.

Recommended for those who want a cheap good meal under $20. P/S: This shop doesn't sell dumplings despite its name. You can find dumplings in the shops beside it though. This has now arrived in Sydney on George Street but in a much more glamorous setting than a roadside cart. Given our rules regarding food safety, the ingredients are kept behind a refrigerated glass counter and you order off a sheet of paper. How do Asian countries manage to keep food at ambient temperatures roadside without 'issues' ? Anyhow, the choice of ingredients is quite staggering from meats, vegetables, balls of various fillings, noodles and tofu. The thing to keep in mind is that the bowl isn't very big so you can't load it all up with too much and the big thing to note is that it all adds up very quickly from a $$ perspective. I ended up paying $14.70 (and I don't think I went overboard with my choices either) which is a very expensive bowl of takeout hotpot with noodles. Something similar in Taiwan probably cost me about $3. The browl was very fragnant and as a I had chose mild spicy level, it had a good kick to it. Ingredients are typical hotpot quality but the big bummer for me was the price!

I remembered I ordered the Pipis with Basil back in 2017, but couldn't remember what I thought of it, so I am back here in 2022 and I tried the following items: Pipis with Basil - as mentioned, got this again and I thought it was good, but my mother makes it better. This place the sauce is a bit too thick for my liking, but since I love pipis, I came back here again to get them, but this time I asked them to make it super spicy and it tasted a lot better. Spicy Chicken Wonton - okay this is a total fail. The chicken was super dry and just not good. This is the worse spicy wonton I ever had in my life. Kong Bao Chicken - ordered this but I asked them if this is Kung Pao Chicken and they said yes, and this was also the worse version I ever had. It tasted as though they fried the chicken and then cooked it. The chicken was super dry as well. Hot & Sour Soup - decent Beef Noodle Soup - okay this won me over that made me want to come back. I thought this was a good dish given the weather. Pork - good Prawn Dumpling - good size filling in here and ordered some frozen ones to go that I totally forgot to eat. Taiwan Style Smoked Chicken - I think there are two menus floating around, because the one that I saw didn't have the word tea in it, but I believe I saw another one after the fact that had the word tea. When I originally got it, it was to share but didn't realize it was tea smoked chicken and A doesn't like tea, so I was stuck with this large chicken. This didn't wow me, though the chicken wasn't dry, but the novelty of this didn't last long for me. I wanted to order this Tainan Dan Dan Soup Noodle, but it threw me off since it says Soup and I never had Dan Dan noodles that were brothy and when I got to the store I asked them and they showed me a picture on their menu and I have never heard of a soup version of Dan Dan noodles. Maybe they got the name wrong? I didn't get it because I wanted the dry Dan Dan. I want to say service here is eh, but I really didn't like the fact that the shorter lady, who might be the owner or head manager needs a lot of work in hospitality. Both times I came here and I dropped 90-100 dollars and the second time I asked her to give me chili sauce and the other lady gave me this other one that had no chili inside, so I said no, I want the one with chili and she brought me just sliced chili with no oil. I said I want the one that you gave me when I ate here with the chili oil, so the manager lady scolded me as though I am supposed to know the chili sauce I wanted was what they called homemade chili, but meanwhile I think chili sauce was pretty clear. Anyways, the reason why I bring this up is because I saw that the sauce costs $.50, but she charged me $1.00 and she was going to originally charge me a $1.00 just for some sliced chili. Like one little tiny chili sliced doesn't equate to a dollar. I am mad that I have ordered loads of food both times and not only did she charge me a $1.00, but ripped me off because it was supposed to be $.50 only. Shadiness!
