We recently moved to the Seattle area from San Diego, and the transition was tough on our dog, Ollie. I thought I was not going to be able to keep my German Shepherd because she was so reactive to things like rabbits and squirrels and particularly other dogs. Matt helped me work with her on these issues, and also gave me tools to use when I am out with her to manage situations that might arise. At the end of December I found myself in a pretty desperate situation. My 10 month old 80 lb puppy/velociraptor had all but taken over my life. I dreaded walking her. She pulled me around my neighborhood. She'd lunge at other dogs. She'd invade people's space, jump on them. Her energy was so high that even if I'd taken her on a 5 mile hike, she'd still be amped when we got home. Her prey drive was off the charts. I felt utterly defeated and completely in over my head. I honestly didn't know where to turn. Enter Matt Pearlman. He came to me highly recommended by my mom's friend. I spoke to him on the phone to discuss the situation I was dealing with. He immediately reassured me that he could help- better yet, he told me that he preferred working with the "tougher" dogs like my puppy. He also did NOT pass any judgment on me and my current predicament. He's honest, kind, and very experienced. I didn't know exactly what to expect but met him for a consultation a couple days later. From the minute he met my dog.. I knew we were in good hands. He's an absolute natural, and dogs LOVE him. Unlike so many other trainers out there that use food/treats as reward.. he uses body language, leash corrections, voice and hand signals. His entire training philosophy is centered around establishing an authentic working relationship with your dog in an effort to build real and lasting engagement. He also introduced me to working with an ecollar- something that I had long been "against" because I'd grown up thinking that they were cruel and punishing. I couldn't have been more wrong. When used responsibly and correctly, it is an incredible tool (and has been a total game changer). I signed up for 12 sessions and I can't even begin to describe the transformation that's taken place. And to be clear: this work is not "easy." This process takes time and commitment. Results do not happen overnight. And if you're like me, you'll realize that your dog is ready and willing and able to show up for you.. if YOU decide to show up for them. I had to reach my own breaking points during this process because I didn't feel like I was "doing it right" and I wasn't able to get the same results from my dog that Matt could get done in 15 minutes. It was only when I decided to trust Matt and his process completely that my puppy and I really began to turn a corner together and things finally began to start clicking into place. I now look forward to walking my girl and I embrace her big ridiculous puppy energy. I'm also SO grateful to her for being patient with me as I went through the motions of learning to speak HER language. I can't thank Matt enough for everything- and a training session with him is always fun and insightful. He's just as professional as he is personable and funny. I have looked forward to each and every session... and I am already planning to book more sessions in the future so we can really start to get into some more advanced training. Even after working with another trainer, when encountering another dog, Oscar would bark, lunge and present a real risk of causing my husband to fall. 12 sessions later, we both walk Oscar with confidence in a variety of settings and have the skills in place to continue refining Oscar's ability to work as a service dog. Our 5 year old dog Goldie is highly reactive and melts down, lunging and barking at the sight of another dog (even a block away). Working with Matt on leash training, Goldie can be successfully redirected to change directions and remain under control after seeing another dog.
