Tafelspitz is the name of the restaurant belonging to the Marktplatz Hotel, located in the middle of the old town. I have visited a few different restaurants in the old town, and among them Tafelspitz has given me a good impression about the taste and quality of the dishes served. This impression so far is based on my two visits to this place.
At the first time I visited the restaurant with my partner, I ordered pork tenderloin (cooked and roasted) in mushroom sauce with chanterelles (Pfifferling), and my partner ordered steak. Perhaps because it was not normal meal time when we visited in the afternoon, it took a long time (approximately half an hour from our order) for the kitchen to finish cooking and to serve the meals to us. When the meals were served, I do not have a traditional German stomach, and felt that the pork tenderloin tasted a little bit dry to me, but my partner (after he tasted) said that the pork tenderloin was managed well according to German standard. Anyway, I loved the chanterelles and was very pleased by the cooked vegetables served at the side of the dish - they were cooked carrots, roasted squash, Indian beans and cooked potatoes, all tasted fresh and delicate. My partner ordered steak and was satisfied by the degree of cooking and the taste.
The second time we visited Tafelspitz together for early dinner, and it took normal time for the meals to be served. Before the meals, we were served with breads and home made garlic butter dip, which were quite nice. My partner ordered beef rolls (Rindsroulade) and was very pleased about the meal, and again the cooked vegetables served beside the meat. I tried a vegetarian dish - potato dumplings (Kartoffelknödel) with porcini (Steinpilze), original taste (there was other choices such as cream sauce). I liked the way the mushrooms were seasoned and cooked, however I felt that there were too much oil used and in combination with big potato dumplings, the dish was too stomach-filling. Nevertheless, I still found the dining pleasant and would be happy to visit again to further try out other dishes. read more
