My husband and I shared El Grande in order to try a little bit of everything. It came with a taco, enchilada, burrito, and a poblano chile, a salad, and of course, rice and beans. We asked for a side of chorizo and Francisco suggested we try it fundido. So he brought out a plate of queso dip with chorizo in it. It was amazing with the chips. The food, for the most part is pretty Americanized in order to suit the palate of the average, somewhat rural Midwesterner, so if you are hungry for something on the spicier side, just ask. The taco shell was freshly fried and filled with ground beef and topped with lettuce and cheese. The sauce that covered the ground beef enchilada and burrito was tomato based and very bright and velvety. It brought back memories of my childhood eating at my own father's restaurant back in California. There was something on the plate I'd never had before: it was a ground beef patty topped with a bit of a poblano chile and that was covered in a dome of fried masa. It was good! The refried beans were creamy and the rice chewy. Both were seasoned well and just comforting. For dessert, we ordered a sopapilla; a fried flour tortilla dusted with cinnamon sugar, drizzled with honey and with a whipped cream floret and a cherry. I can't wait to go back! I'm bringing my friends and family with me next time.

We also had a nice comfortable booth, with warm chips provided. Our Mexican food choices were all very good. I enjoyed my Enchiladas Suizas (with a Negra Modelo), while Tom had Vegetarian Enchiladas, and Dad has his usual chicken burrito. At 95+ years of age, this guy still has quite an appetite! I was grateful for avoiding the refried beans (as a matter of principle), but did wish that I would have asked for my dish to be a little spicier. The final check was very reasonable and we did enjoy being part of a birthday song at an adjacent table. Dad had some sort of super burrito, while I picked a spicey grilled chicken dish (pollo loco) with tortillas.. We both enjoyed our big portion choices and I appreciated not having refried beans, and enjoying the meat for what it was. Our spice was about right, and there was no need for hot sauce. My favorite Mexican restaurants in Texas make their tortillas in-house - the tortilla here had the texture and flavor of pre-prepared. Not a big deal, but I did notice the difference. Because this was a business lunch, I was not able to try one of the key items on which I base my impressions of Mexican restaurants - no margarita for me this visit. The iced tea substitute was just OK. Of course, our meal was preceded with complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and crispy, but the salsa lacked any meaningful heat - but, hey, this is Iowa, not Texas. Although not spicy it did have nice flavor. I'd be remiss if I didn't offer kudos to our server, a very pleasant young man who answered all of our questions with ease.
