    Chivo, Carnitas & adobada

Wandering about looking for the impossible according to some residents of Treasure Valley - Good Authentic Mexican food. Well kiddies, it is right under your nose, you just don't have the option of turning your nose up when you are near it. Tacos Colima on Middleton is just a few hundred feet east of Caldwell Blvd in Nampa. Looks like it has been there for quite some time. It has a covered area for the al fresco dining. They have tacos, tostados, tortas, burritos, flautas, quesadillas, sopes and plates with beans and rice to go with them. They even have a Cubano sandwich. They have ceviche, shrimp and fish. Their meats include asada, adobada, tripas, lengua, Birria de Chivo, carnitas cabeza, chorizo, pollo, buche and chicharron. So Idaho aficionados of haute Mexican cuisine, what are they missing for you? What? No yellow cheese and food swimming in a nondescript red pool? There was a steady stream of folks getting their street food meals. A couple of the ones before me were getting take-out of 20-30 tacos. Now that is eating good in the neighborhood. I was a little different - I ordered three tacos - Chivo (Goat), Carnitas (fried pork) and Adobada (marinated pork). As always, I ask for "con todo" which signals them to put everything they offer in the way of garnish. Oops, didn't know that meant piles of chopped (diced) cabbage piled high above the onions and cilantro. My mistake, but cabbage (shredded) is used on fish tacos not ALL tacos. I could not separate the cabbage from the other stuff, so I plowed thru the three tacos, but the cabbage flavor was overwhelming and very unwanted. Next time, I will say "sin repollo" to have them keep the cabbage off the tacos. Meanwhile I got the message that the Chivo was really nice and the carnitas was great. The adobada suffers from the same problem at most tacos trucks, it is not al Pastor which is the meat piled up on a vertical spit known as a trompo. That is where the real flavor comes from. Very few places operate a trompo, so the adobada is the next best thing. The prices for the quality and quantity of meats on the tacos was great. A real deal. I would go back for the chivo and carnitas and try some other meats and maybe even a seafood dish. I have to see if their rice and beans meet the authentic standard - I'll bet they do.

One of the hallmarks of a great taquería is how well it serves its food. Tacos Colima does just that. Its servings are well proportioned for the price and are prepared with care. This has an added affect on the quality of its ingredients. They are always fresh. So much so that even in winter you are likely to encounter a line. But don't fret because their service is efficient but not to the detriment of their food's quality. The result, IMO, is that they are the BEST TAQUERÍA in all of Idaho (and eastern Oregon).

Always busy when I come but they get food out quick. Great food at a great price! Has seating with shade which is always a plus.

While we were waiting on friends, the apps we ordered early took forever. This was a theme that would continue through out the afternoon. The food took forever. The tables sat around us ordered after us and were done eating by the time any of ours arrived. They forgot one of the burritos ordered and tried to claim it's because they ran out of that specific meat. It was way too slow to run out of anything. Server was nice, but the kitchen and food was just so insanely slow. Despite having to wait forever, once it showed up, it was okay. Not great, not terrible, just ok. I'm not saying I won't come back, I'm just saying I know what to expect. There are better Mexican restaurants in Caldwell, and a much better one in Kuna that I'd rather go to.

It was my birthday, and family tradition says the birthday-ee gets to choose dinner. I was going to…read morehit my favorite Mexican restaurant, but in my mind, molcajete came up. A quick Yelp review showed that Eliza's had recently opened. It wasn't in the core of old downtown, so it's a little tough to find. It's next to a Hispanic grocery. You walk in and go to the counter to order. The menu is perfect. There aren't a million things to go through. We got some guacamole and chips, tacos, a torta and the molcajete. I got a medium horchata to drink. We found a place to sit and a cute little fella came to deliver our chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh, and very clean tasting. I enjoyed it a lot. After a while the guacamole came out with chips... it was a hit. I little on the spicy side, but it was fresh, no doubt. While we waited, a mariachi singer came in and sang... and boy did he sing. He was fantastic. We absolutely loved the intimate concert. It took a while, but our food came. My wife had the tacos and loved them. The torta, for the 13 yr old, was great his only complaint was it was a little too toasted. The meat was fantastic. The food was legit. If you've never had a molcajete, it's an experience. The thing is a flaming hot stone bowl,(no touchy, it's hot,) filled to the brim with shrimp, strips of grilled chicken, Carne Asada, cactus leaf, cheese, onions, and some jalapeno strips. They bring it to you hot as can be in a boiling stew of a tangy green sauce. It's not cheap, but it could easily feed 2-3... The horchata was great. I enjoyed it, it was totally refreshing. The food came and so did the songs, BTW, if the guy we heard tonight is singing, you need to show up. He's seriously awesome. They were so polite and I really enjoyed it. Here are the things I took a star off for. 1. As sweet as the waitress was, she got distracted a few times, and could have paid a little more attention. I am gonna chalk this up to inexperience. We needed a chops refill a few times, and there were only two tables filled tonight. 2. It was pricey... but worth it. 3. This is NOT fast food. Plan on a long wait. Understand though, that you are getting some made to order food, not just a scoop of something out of a bucket. There were a lot of people making food, so it was weird to have it take that long... the singer made it ok.. because he was fun to listen to. 4. They could serve and refill water, instead of selling water . The kids wiped out their water bottle in minutes. All in all, the things they can improve on didn't impact the quality of the food. It was REALLY good. We will be back... I think that they will continually get better and faster. With the quality of the food, I'm shocked this place wasn't packed.
