i have lots of memories with this place. I started coming here when I was a teen. Back then they were at a other location, what is now Casita Mexicana (same street). This became my family's go to Mexican restaurant (not just immediate family, but also extended family). We came here for everything: lunch, dinner, birthdays, post soccer practices or games. I have many great memories of the vibe and food. I tried almost everything on the menu such as the cochinita pibil, carnitas, queso fundido, sincronizadas, tacos suaves, enchiladas, tortilla soup, and chilaquiles. My favorites were always the burrito gratinado and the tacolandia (fajita with melted cheese and bacon).
I had moved from PR before they moved to this location a couple years ago. It has more space. That was a good move considering its growing popularity. When I moved back recently I returned but found that the quality had changed and not for the better. The food just wasn't as good as I remembered. I don't know what changed, whether it was the kitchen staff, lesser quality ingredients, change in management or less supervision, or maybe it was never that good to begin with and I didn't realize it until I was exposed to better Mexican food. Maybe a combination of some or all, I can't say. But it bums me out because of the great memories I have. My family still cherishes it, especially my dad. He is a huge fan of the margaritas, as are my wife and brothers. I'm not much of a margaritas guy, but I do like them. They are strong. Also, I will say that the service has never missed a beat. I can't complain there. The manager always greets us at the door and the servers are always on point. The service is in part why they have kept such a loyal clientele. Every time I drive by I. The evening a can tell it is busy.
This is no longer my go to Mexican restaurant. It's not even a place I will consider when I'm thinking of Mexican food (there has been a recent surge in better Mexican restaurants, straying from the traditionally Puertoricanized Mexican food). I still come here when my dad suggests it because it's his favorite and we always have a good time, even if the food is no longer what matters to me. It's the comps y that matters... and the memories.
