There is a certain phenomenon that I'm convinced only exists in NYC, which is the existence of Tex-Mex / Mexican themed takeout spots run by Chinese folks (#1). Folks from diasporas where Mexican communities run deep and authentic Mexican food is abundant will rightfully see these places as an abomination. If anything, they're a significant contributors to the stigma that NYC is incapable of producing quality Mexican food, let alone Tex-Mex. Taco Today most definitely belongs in this group. Their setup is like many others, almost as if American-Chinese takeout was morphed into faux-Mexican fare and sold for similar prices. The food is salty, low quality, and not even remotely close to the real thing. Yet, when compared to its similarly themed restaurant brethren, it stands out for its abundance, relative affordability, and solid variety. Hard shell tacos are a thing. So is ground beef that strangely is reminiscent of Taco Bell. Portions of the menu are dedicated to Mexican rice toppings, burritos, and quesadillas. Even the fajitas are packed with substantials portions of protein. Minus tacos (#3), most everything is affordable and under $10. Delivery is quick and service is not the warmest, but it's most definitely efficient. There are only a handful of tables for dine-in, so it's best to make this a takeout experience. Anyone who lives in Sunnyside, will find their delivery to be wonderfully quick. Lastly, no need to order anything in Spanish. ___________ (#1) Fukinese fam, unite. We used to get food here when it was owned by the previous owner but returned because my kids (now grown up) missed the freshly made soft tortillas. This simple flat bread is one of their fond childhood memories. So happy the new owner is still making them freshly. We got 3-lunch specials with Mexican rice and black bean soup: supreme fish taco, 2-beef steak fajitas with black beans over Mexican rice and black bean soup, supreme chorizo taco, and beef chilli over French fries for 5-people. Wow this place surprised me. Everything on the menu is very affordable and they have great lunch specials. There's limited seating, a small counter top and a 4 top. Best to take your food to go. I ended up getting the steak fajita lunch special, the steak tasted awesome and was loaded with peppers and onions. They also gave me a large order of rice. I usually frequent another Mexican place a few blocks away from my apt, but I decided to try out Taco Today since I got a menu in the mail last week. Due to my naive self, I didn't even know what the place was like and whether it was just a takeout or sitdown place. I didn't visit the area beforehand, so I was just ordering off a whim. Additionally, I didn't see any recent photos or many reviews so I was just confused. I ended up ordering online for takeout. The place more resembles a Chinese takeout joint with a tiny area just to pick up food. For what it's worth, it probably doesn't take that long to order food either if you go there first. Anyhow, I got the pinto bean burrito along with a side of tortilla chips. Both were just ok honestly. The burrito was fine, but it was overstuffed and not wrapped up properly so it easily unwound. It probably would make a difference trying to heat up the tortillas a little more. But then again, the tortilla stuck to the foil. Hmm.... The chips were alright too. Nothing too spectactular. The main takeaway though is price. For less than $8 (including a soda), you can get a burrito & chips & drink. It's just great value. Is it the best food? My friend & I were taking a walk last night as we began to take notice of the new & wonderful food choices in the Woodside/Sunnyside area. Quite a difference from years ago. Suddenly, we had an urge for empanadas, so I suggested my hole-in-the-wall go to, Mama's Empanadas, on Greenpoint. Unfortunately, like many restaurant businesses, it shut down after serving the community for decades. We turned around and started on our trek back when we noticed Taco Today. I'm not going to lie. It looked like your average Chinese/taco fast food joint but we decided to give it a try. There was, after all, an "A" grade in the window, so what did we have to lose. I ordered the Shrimp Quesadilla while my friend ordered a variety of goodies for both her daughter & grand-daughter. We decided to take it out. The place is small. . . Fast forward to when I got home and dove into my first bite. Tasty. Monteray Jack Cheesy. Every morsel had a bite or two of shrimp. It was in one word delicious. Sent a text to my friend. Her family had the same positive experience. Today, I ordered for my mom & brother. This time I ordered 2 Grilled Steak Tacos, 1 Grilled Chicken Tostada & 1 Shrimp Tostada. Again, delicious. Our daughter's pediatrician is next door, so we decided to lunch here one day. Not impressed. The burritos lack authentic flavors and the ingredients were bland. There was also a clash between warm ingredients (chicken) and nearly frozen ingredients (lettuces and guacamole). It all just felt rushed and low quality. I made an online order and my food was forgotten. The website said 45min delivery time , which i made the order at 6:25p.m and i called by 8p.m and the food never came. When i called too make a complaint she said that my order left, but i had cancelled for a refund. Not authentic Mexican but pretty good cheap, fast food. I got an all day special that came up just over $7, which was more than enough. The all day special comes with rice, choice of meat, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, salsa, beans, soda and 2 soft tortilla. I enjoy everything I have ordered from this place. There was a Taco restaurant in this location previously and when it closed I was not left with great options in my area. The new owners came in and completely cleaned/renovated the space. It is now spotless and serves up a great variety of Mexican fare. I came here today with my brother and we're both loving this new taco restaurant. It's been redesigned and I just love how comfy the feel is. The place itself is pretty neat and clean. I ordered a chicken taco supreme and a chicken burrito for about $10. My favorite part was guacamole and the tenderness of the chicken. They even had some homemade hot sauce that suited my brother's taste! He says that the chicken is flavorful and that it was extremely fulfilling. First of all htf you Asian trying to cook Hispanic food?? Just because you put the word "mexican" next to a product doesnt considered it hispanic food. The tostada wasnt even a tostada. Is was literally 6 something for lettuce tomatoe onion pepper n chicken which wasnt well put together. It had no flavor. The tostada was all off balance. It was just straight up gross. It wasnt even a tostada. A tostada is a fry flat tortilla with beans, chicken (or any meat) with flavor, cilentro chop onions and tomatoe and cheese on top this shit was the complete opposite. My fiancée and I order from here at least 4 times a month. The food takes some time because it's cooked to order and it's delicious. I will always accept a longer delivery time for quality food. My only wish is that the website was secure so I could order online instead of having to give my card number over the phone. Terrible and ridiculous. Ordered for delivery and after an hour I called to find out the whereabouts of my food. Was assured that the food would arrive within 15 minutes. It did not. Half hour after that I called back and was told they were extremely busy and my food hadn't even left the restaurant yet! Customers really should be warned if wait times are longer than usual. So after an hour and a half, no delivery. No food. The ONLY reason I gave 2 stars is because they were extremely nice about it and immediately honored my request for a refund on my card. However, if my refund does not show up in my account within 5 business days I WILL be back to edit this review. The Nachos from here are soooooo delicious. I ordered a chicken nacho, a chicken burrito, chicken fajitas, chicken tacos, and the D1 platter. I think this place is so worth the value $$$ and the food is very fresh.
