Two words of advice: Call first. I started eating at Taco Stand as a student in the late 1980s and I love to go back there when I'm in town. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think their bean burrito is awesome. Overall, it's decent Mexican, cheap. Maybe it's just bad luck, but I've tried to go to T-Stand 3-4 times in the past few years, and every time, they seem to be closed for one reason or another. One time they had been slammed all day so they closed because they were short on ingredients. Once was Labor Day, so that's just me not knowing. Driving into town tonight, I checked the hours on their website, knowing some places around Athens are closed on Sundays. Their website said they were open until 9:30. I pulled up at 7:55 and the door was locked. The hours posted on the front window said they were open until 9:00. Employees who were inside said they had closed because "there weren't any customers." No longer affordable. Prices are higher and sizes are smaller. The quality has gone down. My most recent visit involved cheese dip that was the consistency of soup. The burritos are smaller than they used to be and almost double the price. It's easier to go to Kroger and buy a can of refried beans ($2.00) shredded cheese ($2.49) and some tortillas ($1.99) and make 8 larger bean burritos ($6.50) instead of paying $36 for smaller ones. But they took the time to wrap my burrito with care to facilitate safe driving somewhere while eating without arriving with the evidence drizzled down my shirt. The employees were very friendly and we had a pleasant conversation with them as they took our order and cooked our food. Excellent service! For a Sunday night, it was a very chill environment. Not good. Not authentic. We came in with no expectations, the parking lot always seems full so we tried it. I had a bad feeling about it looking at the menu. Steak had an off-putting texture, ground beef tasted like chef Boyardee or sloppy Joe sauce. All around not good food. Will never come back. There are a lot of other taco places around here serving amazing authentic Mexican food. This is a waste of time and money. Hopefully it doesn't make me sick later. read more

This stand is disgusting. You either have to be really drunk or really high to have this food. I have literally seen the staff microwave the food and place it in a tortilla or hard-shell taco. When I saw the reviews I was confident it was going to be good. My co-worker and I were disgusted by the taste, how it was served, and the staff who had that IDGAF attitude. The Milledge Ave location was long a great place and an icon of Athens. Recently, it changed owners and the current employees were rude over the phone and refused to take orders, referring me to Google to find the "Chow-now" website. When I did that, wasn't anything there on that site relevant to the T-Stand. Essentially, an Athens institution has become something that refuses to serve it's customers at all. If they keep this up, the place will just close and the rude employees will be--unemployed. Edit: I heard from the new owner recently. Evidently, he bought into a place with a skeleton crew of all new people that he has to train. He is a local guy who really wants to keep the tradition going. I think he really cares about shaping things up and I plan to give him another chance after he has had some time to do this. He has taken on the monumental task of saving something that has been around for 40 plus years from becoming an extended parking lot for the Dunkin Donuts next door. If he is going to do the work to keep T-Stand around, he has my support. The B-52's, REM, and lots of other well known folks called this their fast Tex-Mex place and untold numbers of ordinary people have too. Like Weaver-D's and the 40 watt, things like this make Athens nice. read more

A few locals recommended me this place, and I stopped by for lunch. I got the 2 taco combo, 1 chicken and 1 fish. It came w/ chips salsa and a drink. Had to settle for soft tacos since they said they didn't offer hardshell (not sure if they just ran out or what) I was impressed with the size of the tacos when I first got them. I would say that I enjoyed the fish taco more so than the chicken. The chicken was just like chicken tenders chopped up in a taco w/ some sauce, wasn't too impressed, but all the locals there have told me they loved it. Fried fish taco was pretty good! It was a little saucey for me but id def get it again. They charge hot sauce and seeing as I didn't have any change (20 cents), the server was nice enough to let me have it. I'd say overall it was ok, portions of the taco were big and the place itself was pretty old school looking. read more

Decently priced with good portions. We got the Mini Mega Nachos, a chicken taco, and a beef taco. The Nachos had good chips and a perfect amount of toppings piled high. So this is the original Taco Stand but it's definitely not the nicest! Both the inside and the patio areas seem like they haven't redesigned anything since opening many moons ago. The parking lot is small and they are crowded over by the nearby Dunkin Donuts unfortunately. However their tacos aren't bad. I used to be a fan of their tofu taco but have recently progressed to chicken. This place just tastes like college to me, and my regular order still rolls off the tongue: "#9 (taco salad), with beef, hot sauce, and a diet pepsi." For $4.99 including the drink, this place is a college student (or reminiscing broke graduate student's) dream. And the food is actually quite good, and, if you order correctly, fairly healthy as well (at least compared to what else you could get at that price). Though the downtown location was my go-to spot while I was in school here, this location has since earned my love because of its still close proximity to downtown and plentiful parking. It also has an enclosed patio that is very group friendly. Because this location is bigger, I don't feel guilty for hanging around and chatting for an hour after I've finished my $5 meal. read more

Ok. I like local. This location is convenient. 1. The exterior and interior needs cleaning/ painting, desperately. 2. The bathroom was admirably clean! 3. The mega burrito was good but was lukewarm and was not " mega" but ordinary. If it's mega make it really big. If you precook/heat things, get them hot. 4. This place was recommended by a local so the wife and I gave it shot. In retrospect I found that the recommendation was for the other Taco Stand in Athens. My experience was not good at all. While the staff were nice they were not attentive at all. They seemed to enjoy standing by the grill and carrying on a conversation as I waited for a refill at the counter. The food was not good either. I know it is a college town but a decent Taco is not that hard to me. I ordered chicken but received beef. the beef was quit grease as was the shell. My biggest complaint was the leaking roof and mold on the walls. Bad food is one thing but not maintaining the building is another. Who wants to eat where the water is dripping down the walls and you can see black mold. This is not healthy and should be addressed. Makes me wonder how they passed food inspection with mold on the walls. Take my advice and look elsewhere for tacos. read more

Anyone who has read my reviews knows that I'm not hung up at all on restaurant decor. In fact I really like 'dives', but not 'dumps', and this place is certainly the later. I walked in, took one look at the open kitchen, and immediately looked for the health inspectors certificate. (I found it hanging over the door- it was a 96). Acting on advice from a friend who told me that the food was great, I went against my better judgement and ordered a taco and quesadilla combo. The ground beef taco was actually not too bad, but the chicken quesadilla was not good at all. It's never a good thing to be thinking about food born illnesses as you are eating your food, but all I could do was think about all the things I learned in bio. Needless to say I couldn't finish my lunch. With all the other really good Hispanic restaurants in the Athens area why in God's green earth my buddy likes this one is beyond me. I used to really like this place, but the past two times I went to this one I have had really bad experiences. The first time the steak was tougher and smellier than old boots, the second time the chicken was raw in the center.
