$20 for three tacos is never, ever worth it. Steer clear. Went with a friend without a reservation and they were accommodating and got us a table that had been cancelled. Service was 4 stars. They used quality ingredients and everything tasted great. Food is 4 stars for sure. The portions were so wrong it hurt, you can't even eat the taco without a fork and knife, which defeats the idea of the taco being a food for the everyday and everyone. Portions 2 stars. Any Mexican restaurant that serves Cochinita Pibil immediately distinguishes itself from the masses of mediocre Mexican places in Norway. They also get points for serving SOFT homemade tacos, which Mexicans swear by. It also happens we sat next to a guy from Mexico City who claims this is as close as it gets to real mexican in Oslo. The idea is cool, you order and experiment a bunch of *tiny tacos (you would need 5-7 tacos for a dinner) and get their matching salsas. The cochinitas pibil (slow roasted shredded pork in banana leaf, need I say more) is the star, full 5 stars, with the very good barbacoa lamb not far off, 4.5 stars. Ox tongue, fish and chicken are all satisfactory but clearly one notch below, 3.5 stars. Bonus points for serving the guacamole with totopos instead of regular nachos. The one caveat is that each tiny taco is NOT priced like a tiny dish, and it gets pricey fast when ordering lots of tacos. I don't think you can fault the quality of the food, it is just overpriced. The atmosphere screams out fun, well-designed restaurant down to servers with green military banana republic costumes. It's not a place you'd expect to pay such a premium. Overall, the value is a 4. Overall a good meal. We had nachos with guacamole as a starter - delicious! We also shared a ceviche, a lot of lime but still good. We had three tacos each, and also a side of Frijoles and Queso Fresco. The best taco was the Pescado al Mojo de Ajo, with grilled fresh fish. The Bistec taco was also pretty good, nicely grilled - but too many chevy parts. Would be better if they trimmed the meat more. The Chorizo con papas was a huge disappointment. They cooked the chorizo and potatoes together, into a fatty mash. I think it would be better if they fried them up separately, so the potatoes could balance out the fatty chorizo more. Had a couple of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, happy to see that on the beer list. Would love it if they also could add the mexican beer Negra Modelo. Price is pretty high, but not more than similar places. You do get a lot of meat/fish on the taco, so there's value for the money. Happy with the service - fast and friendly. read more

Take it from a Mexican-American; this place is seriously overhyped. The tacos are the size of a child's hand (aka, tiny as F), no spice, and it still ended up costing $10 a taco. WTF?? Try and find a Mexican or an American (where Mexican food is most popular) to make you some decent tacos. Or better yet, try to make some yourself - don't waste your $$ on going here. I'm a Texan who adores tacos, and I've ordered them as many times in as many places as possible because I can only go so long without them! I was really impressed by this place. It's hard to find an authentic, high-quality Mexican food place in this part of the world, especially one that makes their own tortillas and chips (which is key). This place was delicious and the same quality as I eat in Mexico; the ingredients and preparation make all the difference here. Also, I'm not sure why people complain about the size of the tacos here, tacos in Mexico are small and are made with small tortillas, which is why you often order several. People who expect something else are not familiar with what authentic tacos look like and seem to be thinking of the Americanized version. The tacos, guac, and margaritas are all on point. Living in California, I thought it was a brave choice for my friends to invite me here. How could the food possibly measure up to the abundant excellent Mexican restaurants at home? Actually, my skepticism was unfounded. Though this wouldn't rank at the top in San Francisco, it was certainly good. Tasty tacos with a wide range of fillings, even lengua (one of my favorites!) I really can't rate it higher than 2 stars, despite the decent food. I know Norway's an expensive country, but $8 for a single taco that costs $1-2 in California? Ludicrous. Walked by a few weeks ago and because I'm a big fan of Mexican food me and my girlfriend tried it out for lunch. At a first glance this place gives you kind of a trendy atmosphere but when you look closer it's a nice restaurant with a chill interior but not as trendy as I first perceived it as. It's a popular place to go but we got the last table. We tried the tacos and I've got to say that the pork tacos where the best. They also had a good lemonade that I enjoyed. The food is good and authentic Mexican food, at least that's what it tastes like. There service is shifting just by the time I visited I found the some of the staff is real friendly and some are acting a bit strange. But if you like Mexican food, its not the best place in town but it have good food and I would still think its worth trying out. read more

Wife and I ate there last night as our first meal in Oslo, and it was delicious! The head chef is from Mexico, and he has taken the staff there to try different foods, so as opposed to most Mexican restaurants in Scandinavia, they know what they are doing. Refreshingly simple, fresh, tasty food. Filling a gap in the market in Oslo with a cool concept too. Don't know why the place has $$$, falls into the $$ bracket. I took my 9 yr old daughter here for lunch. Because nearly all the chili is in the salsas she had no Trouble tucking into the tacos, though the guacamole was surprisingly hot. Great lunch venue, though I'm not sure it's the right place for a big long evening meal. read more

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Oslo because they stick to a simple concept and do it well. The guacamole is good and so is the filling on all the tacos I've tried. The tortillas fresh and good but are pretty small for the filling, so after a first time I understood that it was smart to order extra tortillhas, extra cheese and extra guacamole and just mix several tacos that way. Don't bother with the dessert of the day. it's usually a decent tasting flan but overpriced. read more

The tacos and salsas were tasty and the beer was refreshing. We tried several different meats and can honestly say all of them were great. The service was top notch. Taco República is not a restaurant that can justify its price point. I was surprised to see it listed with 5 stars on Yelp. You can do a lot better in this range in Oslo. We ordered Cochinita Pibil, Barbacoa and Pollo Asado in 250g portions along with guaca and two extra servings of tortillas and a round of beers. The Cochinita Pibil was ok and the salsas and condiments were actually quite good. The Barbacoa and Pollo Asado on the other hand were so lacking in taste that we had problems telling them apart at first. While I had my fill, this was partly due to some of the others not seeming too keen to finish what we had ordered. If Taco República had been a budget alternative I might very well have revisited, but at it's current price point it's competing with places like Alex Sushi, Dinner and Brasserie France and it just doesn't come close in any way. If you feel your money was well spent here, Oslo has a lot in store for you! read more

I change my mind. This place isn't even worth the two stars I originally gave it. If you are going to serve little, mediocre food for a lot of money, the service should at least be excellent. My friend begged me to go here with her and she had really been wanting to try it. We were on my way up to my place, but stopped in to make a reservation for about an hour later. The guy that met us at the door asks us "what do you want?" My friend tells him we would like to make a reservation as we weren't quite ready to eat, but we would be back down in an hour. He said he doesn't take reservations and we would have to do it online, then walks away as he clearly had something more important to do on his laptop. We came back down an hour later, not having made reservations. Again, the same guy greets us with the same "what do you want". He tells us he couldn't possibly seat us because they were booked from 6pm on. It was 4pm at this time so my friend told him that unless they are painfully slow at making food, we would easily be done by 6. He reluctantly agrees to seat us and we were done by 5pm. The food was again tasteless and like always way overpriced. It's sad because when I first found out this place was going to be a Mexican restaurant I was so excited I nearly wet myself. Turns out it's just another disappointing Norwegian-"Mexican" restaurant. read more
