Hands down best Mexican spot on the north shore. Everything is good. I love their tacos and my daughter loves their burritos. My personal favorite is the crispy camarones (shrimp), the combination of all the ingredients create this happy harmonious taco. Truly my favorite taco ever. I also like the chicken taco salad. Fresh high quality ingredients. A bit pricy, but worth every penny. Service is good. As busy as they can get, they are efficient. Everything is made to order. read more

I ate here four times over two weekends (yes, four!) this summer--I was so hooked on these tacos that I only checked in once. That should tell you everything you need to know. Oh, you need more? Okay... The tacos are worth your time if you're close by. You walk in and there is a menu on the wall and you order at the counter. They're fresh and satisfying with a side of salsa that's the perfect partner to give you that flavor boost you might be missing. And let's not forget the real Coca-Cola in glass bottles--nothing like it to feel like you're living your best taco life. That said, expect to pay a pretty penny for your tacos. The portions aren't as generous as they could be, and the flavor didn't exactly pop but for now living off their laurels and minimal competition makes Taco Nano the tops for this neighborhood. As for the dining area? It's basic--no bells or whistles. You'll see no-frills booths and a few tables. It's not much, but hey, it's all about the tacos here, right? read more

Maybe just a bad night, but: One poor woman taking live orders, phone orders, serving tables, and trying her best...but just not keeping up. One person in the kitchen. No water in the dispenser. Trash overflowing the receptacles. Tasteless guacamole and bland chips. ...and our "Crispy Cameron" tacos had two small shrimps and barely any other contents. We had not been to Taco Nano for a year and always loved it, but what a difference!!! If you don't have enough staff, shut down phone orders...or maybe don't open at all because everyone suffers. Greed, mismanagement, and bad reviews will be your demise. read more

My friend has been mentioning this place for a while, so I finally decided to try it on a Saturday evening around 5:30. The first thing I noticed was the fun decor and an easy-to-read menu on the wall. Although Taco Nano is the kind of place where you order, sit down, and they bring the food out to you, I was impressed that there was ample seating, including booths. I ordered a Vegetariano Al Carbon taco, a side of rice, a side of beans without cheese, and guacamole and chips (all vegan). The chips and guac came out first, and we both enjoyed them. The portion size was ample, and my friend appreciated that we could order it mild so it didn't have a ton of onions. I also liked the rice and beans. The taco was dry (I should have put some guacamole in it), but it tasted good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The taco was served on a reusable metal tray, but I did not like that the rice and beans came in throw-away plastic containers. read more

So I ordered a chicken quesadilla. What I got was a taco. When I drove back and showed them the taco they said " that's a quesadilla" she must have thought I was stupid... I wish I had taken a picture and posted it. I won't be going there again read more

Best tacos. GOAT fish tacos. This is the pace. You can tell made with good and fresh ingredients. Probably order 1-2 times per week. While I understand and have read some of the more negative reviews it makes me sad. No person or place is perfect and these are all occasional one-offs so take that into account. Pablo in particular has been outstanding. We had a mistake Oman order and he made it right without any suggestion and personally stopped at our home. Who does that anymore!!! Forget the haters and enjoy this place. read more

5 dollars for a cold carne asada taco, 5 dollars for a side, too expensive for non authentic tacos

Called to order takeout. They picked up the phone and immediately put me on hold. Came on after an extended wait, I barely was able to order food and they literally hung up on me before I could ask to pay or add drinks. I went to pick up the food and mentioned this and the girl at register had zero reaction. How do you have employees servicing customers like this?! read more

Had to check out another place in Northfield we heard good things about. It seems like all these are in strip malls, ironic for a pretty fancy suburb. Taco Nano has gotten lots of good reviews, and there's even awards for these on the walls. Lots of good choices for any preference, including margaritas. You can also get you drink on as well as eat on, and there's lots of choices for protein. A very casual place where orders are taken at a counter. It's then brought over. The prices seem kind of high for this kind of thing. High on the drinks especially. It's $10 for a Margarita. These come in pretty tiny cups, so not worth it for these. As for the tacos, there's a lot. We got some of the Vegetariano Al Carbon, the one without any meat. It's $4 each. These had carrots, crispy carrot strings, grilled portobello, red peppers, salpicon de serrano, and zucchini. Good flavor combination. These had texture and weren't all mushy like some vegetarian tacos can get. Good even though it's not authentic. It's more like a place for lunch than it is for anything fancy. The tacos mostly have meat except the one for vegans and vegetarians. read more

I ordered 4 steak tacos and 1 al pastor, 1 chicken and chips and guac. When I got home, they only gave me 3 tacos. It turns out they gave me 1 steak and 2 al pastor, so not even what I ordered. I called and they told me to come back or they could refund. It was a long day, so I took the refund on the 3 missing tacos, but they really screwed up my kids dinner. I know stuff happens, but I decided to post this once I found they didn't even give me what I ordered. bummer. read more

Came on a recommendation from my coworker to try tacos. Being from NY, it's been rough trying to find decent mexican food with good flavor. The lady at the front was welcoming and helpful. The menu looked great with a good variety of options. The restaurant was well lit and welcoming. It had a nice ambiance with good spacing. We ordered the chicken taquitos, 6 tacos - pollo gringo, beef barbacoa, pork al pastor, carne asada, sea of cortez and the old el paso, as well as a Horchata. Chicken taquitos - was good. I wish the chicken was a little more moist and had a little more flavor but otherwise good with the 3 sauces they gave us. Out of the tacos, the pollo gringo, beef barbacoa, pork al pastor, and carne asada were a bit flavorless and dry in our opinion. They tasted okay but just seemed bland. Our favorite were the sea of cortez and the old el paso. They had a bit more flavor but was still mainly okay in our opinion. The horchata - was good. Wish it was a little less watery but had a nice cinnamon flavor. Overall, thought it was okay. Food was okay but nothing amazing. read more

I used to love their tacos until I almost swallowed a piece of rubber band that holds vegetable bundle. But that wasn't the only issue. I called to tell them about it and they asked for pictures. so I sent few pictures but I didn't hear from them. So I called back and they said the manager will call me back which never happened. I called few more times asking for a manager, and they told me to call certain day certain time to speak to the manager. I wasn't asking to get a hold of a president. why does it have to be this difficult to get a decent customer service? They simply ghosted me and leave me no choice to write this review. read more

I used to love this place, but boy, how things have changed! After not visiting for a few months, my partner and I decided to give Taco Nano another shot. Big mistake! The tacos we once enjoyed are now a sad shadow of their former selves. The tortillas were cold . The meat was dry and flavorless - I've had more exciting experiences eating cardboard. What happened to the Taco Nano!!! we used to know and love? This place has gone downhill faster than a runaway taco truck. Save your money and your taste buds - go elsewhere for your taco fix. I won't be coming back anytime soon, if ever. read more

We stopped here on a whim after kayaking at Skokie Lagoons. My review is based on the fact that I'm vegetarian, and unfortunately, there aren't a lot of "flavorful" vegetarian options. There's 1 taco option, aside from a quesadilla and burrito. In the absence of mushrooms in my taco, it was simply some sauteed vegetables. No greens, no cilantro, no cheese, no salsa. How nice it would be if the staff at Taco Nano re-evaluated their vegetarian options to consider a flavorful black bean taco to give a protein option to vegetarians. Cilantro is so common in Mexico, so why not add that? FYI, 5/5 for service and atmosphere. Aside from the food, I wish Taco Nano would consider using reusable bowls for offering their salsa versus disposable single-use plastics. It's disappointing to see all that plastic go into the trash afterwards. read more

Very clean and colorful place. Burrito unfortunately was premade and sitting out under a warmer for some time. And not good at all. Was almost all lettuce and large folded up tortilla, with the little bit of dried out carne customer facing like it was applied with a butter knife. Not sure what that strange flavor was either, could not get past a few bites. read more

Fuck this place and the people who work there. Came a couple weeks back. Take my order home and it's wrong. Happens. No big deal. I go back and ask for the right order, and I even pay for it again WILLINGLY, cuz I'm not gonna fuck whoever owns this place cuz their staff screwed up. Take that order home, wow, they screw my order again! I go back, I even willingly pay again. So $60 for 3 tacos essentially. Didn't write a review cuz whatever im an idiot too, And not gonna lower the ratings for 1 bad day. I go back tonite. Order a burrito with just carne asada, cheese, and sour cream. Take it home. No sour cream. I go back without the burrito, I tell them they fucked my order up. Girl is like well you gotta bring the burrito, and expects me to pay for the new one. Maybe thinking that maybe I'm trying to get a free burrito or something and I think she also said that they got the order right. I'm pissed and pay. I get the new burrito, go home, and then grab the old burrito really quick and bring back the uneaten burrito and drop it off when nobody is at the counter. Go back home. Bite into the new burrito, and AGAIN... no sour cream lol. I go back again... give the burrito to the girl, she brings it back to the cook and she realizes I'm right about both orders and I can see the cook laughing while she's talking with him about the screwup. I was going to get another one until I saw the bozo cook laughing. So I just ask for my money back. And the girl giving me my money back of course doesn't say sorry. Not that I would have ever expected that from them in a million years. Been coming here a long time. Lost a customer. read more

I ordered a burrito. He asked questions about whether I wanted steak or chicken. I told him that I was ok with the beans. My family ordered tacos, and cerviche and guacamole. I sat and watched while they ate. When I went in to ask after 20 minutes, and the man who asked me the burrito questions said "i never rang it up." He was not apologetic at all. Ridiculous service. And they automatically add a service charge before asking for a tip. I shouldn't have asked for a refund on the extra charges for terrible service, read more

We've eaten at Taco Nano many times over the past many years. We hadn't gotten tacos in a long time so were excited to order tonight. - Birria taco was terrific! - Carne asada was terrific! - Pork carnitas taco was dry and bland except for the green salsa on top - Beef barbacoa had one chunk of meat on one end of the taco, onions in the middle and lettuce on the other end. Big disappointment - The medium guacamole was so hot that my family that loves spicy food can't eat it. They're sweating and drinking milk. It will go in the garbage. This is my go-to Mexican place! I got the steak burrito. It has steak, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, rice, cheese, and beans. I get this every time I go here and it's consistently really good. Not wow'd by this place. Was hoping for some really good food but felt like it was stuff that was frozen and reheated. I mean that's ok when it can deliver. This fell flat. I liked the water station. But overall bc the food was subpar it was a miss for us. The green salsa is pretty good. The rice is missing a yum factor. Feels a bit from-the-box. My husband's tacos fell apart. Great authentic food, super cute little outdoor patio with string lights, tucked away with plenty of parking - perfect simple summer spot. We grabbed the nachos, and one taco of each kind - and loved all of them. The Al pastor taco was my favorite. We washed it all down with some beer and a strawberry margarita. You walk in, order at the counter and pay, grab a table number, water and cutlery and go sit. Pretty basic - but really a nice neighborhood joint. Recommend. read more

This place could be a gold mine but... EVERYTHING is plastic & paper even when you dine in, so gross for the Earth. We won't return based on this alone. Fresh guacamole was the best we'd had in the midwest. The margarita is served in a way too tall plastic glass that might had tequila in it, too sweet and not worth my calories. The veggie taco was expensive, but fantastic! Interesting veggies, some fried, some roasted so the textures were great! The staff was lovely & very attentive. The chicken burrito was tasteless, but the salsas were good. read more

Your food looked nothing like the pics on this Facebook page. I ordered your nachos with steak. Your chips are not fresh. Your cheese sauce is an imitation ball park style cheddar sauce. The steak was rewarmed more than once, as the texture profile was mush. Extremely salty would be an accurate description for the nachos. No sour cream drizzle, as in the picture. I ate 1/2, and tossed them. It was a sloppy mess in which the chips on top only had any toppings. The rest was dry stale chips. Your cashier was very friendly. Your place was clean. I do understand that your clientele enjoys your food, and you are probably successful overall. Also, maybe it was an off day for nachos, and I am probably use to more authentic tacos. Btw, birria refers to either goat or lamb.. and comes with an au jus. My girlfriend's was not served with au jus and was beef.. Barbecoa is beef. Your menu board has them backwards. read more

This place used to be one of my favorite places to eat at but after a recent visit, I can't trust eating here again. One of my family members brought leftover food back from the restaurant (a taco, chips, and guac). After a couple hours, they were complaining about feeling sick and having stomach pains. They ended up going to the ER after feeling chills and throwing up multiple times. The doctor said it was stomach virus from the last thing they ate, which were the food coming from this restaurant. I too felt slightly sick after eating only the chips but didn't throw up. read more

Taco Nano never disappoints. This is your basic local Mexican restaurant with super food. I probably eat here once a month and have not had a bad experience. Taco Nano sent out promotional emails offering free guacamole with your meal on National guac day. They also posted this on Instagram and clearly stated that you only needed to show a member of the staff the email or their Instagram post in order to take advantage of this promotion. When we showed up at the restaurant they informed us that the boss decided not to offer free guac. We also witnessed them yelling at a customer on the phone who was upset that they were not honoring this promotion. This is false advertising and while Taco Nano used to be one of the best taco places nearby there are now many other better alternatives. I would recommend checking out La Taquiza instead. read more

Taco Nano - Mexican Near Me - Northfield, Illinois

Taco Nano is a funky little Mexican restaurant located in Northfield in an upscale neighborhood. The interior space is small w/limited seating. There are tables along the side wall for 2 to 4 people & 1 large table for community seating (cafeteria style). There are also a bunch of picnic benches across the street which some people choose to eat at and it was a beautiful day to be outside. When I went the restaurant was packed so I squeezed in between some people in the last seat and chowed down. (This boy isn't shy and it was time to eat). The menu board is a chalk board w/the items displayed. I ordered 3 tacos. * Adobo Skirt Steak $4 - Skirt steak, cilantro, avocado, onions & lime - this was just ok, the meat was a little dry * Pork al Pastor $3 - crispy pork, onion, cilantro & a piece of pineapple - this was my favorite - the crispiness of the pork and a slight sweetness of the pineapple was very good * Pollo Gringo - $3.25 - chicken breast, poblano red peppers, grilled onions, quest fresco & guajillo sauce - this was also very tasty, but the chicken was a bit dry. The blend of the poblano peppers and grilled onions really added to the overall taco flavor As I was eating an elderly couple sat down next to me and asked the owner what the taco of the week is. Say What? I didn't catch that when I was perusing the menu board. Evidently they have a special every week (duh I guess that's why they call it the special of the week) The special was skate fish (which I have seen at Assi & H-Mart, but have never eaten). They also had a couple of hot sauces that were pretty good Overall I felt that their food was pretty good, but at $3-$4/taco a bit more then many of the other Mexican restaurants. It's definitely worth your time to check it out. If I'm ever in the area again I would like to go back and try their special of the week whatever it may be and their crunchy Camarones shrimp tacos (thanks Joy) which I also missed on the small side menu board. read more

A bit disappointing. We visited after it was featured in one of the Chicago restaurant review TV shows. The tacos tasted day old and service was sluggish on a snowy slow day. Unfortunately, things don't seem to be going well here. After they've expanded the wait times for food are way tooo long for what the food is. Online orders placed with a "as soon as can be ready" are not ready when THEY SAY THEY WILL BE. And I still waited :30 after I arrived. It's unfortunate, as this place used to be great. Edit: got home (a 10 minute drive) and my order wasn't right. They offered to refund JUST THE ITEM that was wrong. So my wife could eat, but I couldn't? I opted to have them replace it and went back, I'm now :50 minutes into picking up an order 10minutes from my house...there was also some weird stuff going on with my replacement as it was handed to the person to give to me and then it went back into the back for a minute. Needless to say, I didn't eat it. This place won't survive much longer read more

I disliked my burrito. It just wasn't good. I could've gotten better somewhere else. The tacos were pretty good. For some reason - which I have no clue why - I had also ordered a quesadilla. Also stuff is pricey here and portions are small. read more

Everything about this place has gone downhill over the past few years. Our last two takeout orders were missing food, and the manager, Pablo, absolutely refuses to replace food or refund money for incomplete orders. It's unbelievable. Poor management has also translated to poor food quality (super greasy ground beef, underwhelming presentation and shrinking portions), and given how sloppy the place is run I cringe when I think about the kitchen. We won't eat here again without a management change, and we can't recommend it to anyone else either. The trend of negative reviews is real. Check out Trendy Taco, La Taquiza or Guanajuato. All much better alternatives than Taco Nano. read more

You'd think that a place that specializes in tacos would have at least a couple decent veggie taco options. Maybe a potato taco, or a fried plantain taco, or a chile relleno taco, or a fancy mushroom taco, or even a fake chorizo or fake chicken taco, or a nopales taco. But instead it's just one option with the "super authentic" combo of zucchini and carrots. Come on people, it's not that hard. read more

Occasionally I sign up for a late afternoon/early evening torture (I mean class) @ Shred415* and then often stop across the street at Taco Nano to get back all those calories I just burned. I've only picked up food from Taco Nano, but look forward to dining in this small casual restaurant at some point. In the meantime, it's proven to be a quick and easy dinner to take home to my taco lovin' husband. I typically stick w/ the vegetarian tacos for myself. My husband has tried many tacos on the menu, but announces the Old El Paso as his favorite after every meal. Two tacos tends to be plenty for me, while my husband can typically finish 3. Stopped in to order a quick lunch bite to go after reading a review in a local paper. Since I rarely believe anything I read in these local rags that are trying to land future ad placements by never saying anything negative about ANY place they review I was prepared for mediocre food a drab decor. Instead what I found was a pleasantly bright and lively, albeit tiny, seating area and a very legible menu hand written on a blackboard. The decor is colorful without being offensive and I look forward to squeezing in here for a quick dinner in the future. Compared to the other new Mexican place nearby in Glenview (El Mexican - see my review) this place is comfortable, inviting and homey. It has a way WORSE location than El Mexican as it is tucked into a small strip of retail stores one block south of Willow Road just east of Happ with no real "drive-by" traffic. Even with that they were quite busy at lunch time. We ordered a Pork Al Pastor and a Adobo Skirt Steak. Both were fantastic. The pork was tender with a good hit of chile de arbol in the marinade and a very noticeable pineapple taste as it should have. Some folks might find it too sweet - we thought it was perfectly seasoned - no salt needed. The fried fresh jalapenos added a nice flavor without being too hot. The skirt steak had great flavor with a red adobo marinade - maybe chili de arbol again but it tasted very different from the pastor. It had a nice addition of a slice of avocado. Both tacos were seasoned with cilantro and onions and were served on tender and flavorful corn tortillas. We look forward to returning to try the guacamole, duck mole, vegetarian and sea of Cortz tacos. My bet is that this place will survive via word of mouth and their very good branding. read more
