I'm updating my previous review and downgrading the rating from 4 stars to 3 stars. We used to go here all the time because it was nearby and the food was good in general, however we stopped coming here about a year ago due to an older lady who works there. She was so rude and unwelcoming every time we went there. It was such a turn off that it wasn't worth going there. We decided to return recently, but this time we ordered our food online. The food was ready when we picked it up. The prices have increased and they seem to be more expensive than other Mexican restaurants nearby. I ordered the Asada con Huevos for $19.85. That's pretty pricey for a breakfast plate. The chilaquiles were soggy by the time we brought the food home. The meat was chewy and seemed like a cheaper type of meat. And I was disappointed that they had changed the potatoes. They used to offer tater tots but now they have roasted potatoes. My husband got 2 ala carte salmon tacos. They were $7.95 each. Yikes! Talk about pricey. He also got chips for $2.95 and guacamole for $7.95. Our total meal came out to almost $50 when all was said and done. Unfortunately I don't feel that the price reflects the quality of the food. read more

First the service. Everyone was very nice. Food arrived before i could finish getting salsa! I thought that was cool. I ordered the giant taquito, a crunchy chicken taco and a potatoe taco. The potatoe was beef. Not a fan of beef. The taquito was made with breaded chicken breast. I tried to like it but was definitely expecting shredded. And the taco was made the same way. Breaded chicken strip inside a crunchy shell. Not a fan at all. I dont remember them ever serving chicken that way. I always liked how fresh it was. But not tonight at all. I have not been to Taco Mesa in years and I actually forgot about how amazing their food was! I love the cool murals on the walls and the overall chill vibes. All the staff are nice and their chips and salsa are amazing. The food tastes very authentic! I ordered a veggie quesadilla and I'd love to see them make it more like fajitas with bell peppers and other veggies because it was pretty bland. We stopped by to try their tacos to see if it'd be a good fit to cater food for an event we were planning. Their tacos were amazing! We tried the steak and chicken tacos. Their corn tortillas were nice and had just the right amount of chew that paired well with the tender meat they serve. This spot usually has a line out the door and every table is full. It's a casual spot, and family friendly. Patient and kind service explaining the portion sizes and flavors. The chile relleno itself was huge, stuffed with meaty cheese and more of a stewed-tomato sauce/topping than red sauce. The pepper itself was a little more firm (underdone?) than I've usually had it at many other spots before but the flavors were on point. And big scoops of rice and beans accompanied it. The shrimp taco with corn tortilla was really good. The tomato soup also good and tasted like a cheesy tomato soup - not the typical basil-tomato-y soup you might get with a grilled cheese. Our favorite fast Mexican restaurant in North America. We make a point of eating there when we're in Southern California. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant is always clean. Unique menu items, like blackened calamari tacos. I'm a big fan of the king tostada salad with salmon. Taco Mesa is one of the few places that still has a salsa bar. Decided to try this place since it's my friend's favorite taco spot. I thought it was really good. It's definitely on the pricier side, but good enough that I'd come back if I didn't live so far. I got two tacos; steak and fish. I wish I got a third! They were quite good. My only real complaint is the horchata. It was super grainy and had a coconut-like texture that kept getting stuck in my teeth. I think it might have been the tiger nut. It also tasted a bit bland. The restaurant has its years but its always clean, specially the salsa bar that most of the time is spotless. The food consistently comes out great, and the staff is genuinely friendly. We have been going to Taco Mesa in Orange and Mission Viejo for well over a decade. It was our favorite spot. However, the recent menu changes make me a sad girl. Many of the unique and interesting items have been taken off the menu and the vegetarian options are reduced. The menu has, in my opinion, been given a very whitewashed and boring facelift. The salsas are still bomb. I appreciate that they still focus on healthy ingredients and the employees are always so kind. Went to Taco Mesa to try the Mesa Bowl with Salmon. The vegetables were fresh & delicious and the portion size was big. Unfortunately, the portion size of the salmon was too small in comparison to size of the bowl. Not worth the price. My husband had the Taco Tuesday taco's and they were delicious. We've been loyal customers of Taco Mesa for several years and have consistently supported this neighborhood business by recommending it to family, friends, and neighbors. That's why this experience was especially disappointing. I understand that Cinco de Mayo is one of the busiest days of the year, and longer wait times are expected. However, our order took significantly longer than usual, and we noticed several customers who ordered after us receiving their food first. When I politely approached the owner to check on our order, his response was condescending and unprofessional. What made the situation worse was that he spoke to me in this manner in front of other customers and employees. Rather than addressing the concern respectfully, he was dismissive and even stated that he didn't care if he lost our business. As long-time supporters, this interaction was disheartening. Their chips are so good as well as their sides of pickled carrots, onions, cauliflower. However today, some tasted extra salty, such as the green sauce & the chips.
