The food here is so bland. I do not recommend having a meal here. Though the patio is a lovely experience, and my margarita was great, because the food's flavor is so poor it's too hard to justify even three stars. Two stars it is. I could barely decipher a difference between the taste of my steak tacos, the rice, the beans and the guacamole. I asked for a side of raw onions just to help add flavor and I was adding that to everything. The one thing that was really good with great flavor was the red salsa they served with their chips. If the food were better, I'd love to come back as the ambience is very relaxing and it's a great spot if you're just looking for something lowkey and super casual. Service is beyond bad. You have to go to the register to order ANYTHING. Ridiculous They bring your food and never check back on your table but hey they remember to turn the computer around when you order and demand an 18 percent min tip. For what? Then forget about clearing anything. They sit there and talk at the register. People ask for water and they just say it's there pour it yourself. The owner doesn't care AT all. I've seen him told him multiple times. Doesn't care. The chef is amazing. Food is great but the price you pay is ZERO service. So you want great Mexican food then fine. The person behind the cash register who was also out side pointed over to a water bowl under the water stand . It was filthy and had scum on the bottom. I asked him if he could please clean it . He said no I can do it in the bathroom , which I did. We ordered salads one with chicken and one with salmon . Both were ok. Unfortunately, nothing we ordered stood out. The steak tostada was especially disappointing. The steak was bland, extremely dry, and placed over what tasted like cabbage mixed with mayonnaise - runny coleslaw gone wrong. The tostada shell was very hard and tasted stale. The chips and guacamole were equally uninspired. Neither had enough salt or seasoning, so it essentially tasted like a fried tortilla served with plain avocado. The salsa was extremely smoky and tasted like burnt sauce. My partner's enchiladas were also bland. The tortillas were soggy, the chicken and tomatoes were sparse, and everything was overwhelmed by far too much cheese. Even the pinto beans and rice were noticeably underseasoned. We really wanted to enjoy Taco Jane's, but the entire meal lacked freshness, balance, and flavor. First time and never again especially how expensive it was! read more

It has been a few years since I had been to Taco Jane's and was surprised to see that they changed the format to order at the counter and tip on service that we hadn't yet received. Our tab for lunch for two was $85 for an appetizer, Enchilada plate a Chile Relleno and two margaritas. The food arrived quickly and was quite tasty. We were enjoying our meal and decided to get a second round using the Toast app they advertise on the tables. I placed an order and was charged $38 including tip at 2:52. A server came out and said the kitchen and bar close at 2:45. I went in and asked about the charge that posted and they said they would refund the amount. So the man who seemed to be in charge came and brought a receipt for the refund and it was for the $33.87. I made another trip inside to say that the amount is incorrect by nearly $5 dollars. He declared that they don't give tips back, mind you for a drink they didn't make or serve. I again expressed my disbelief and said that I would like my money back and he reluctantly handed me a $5. It is a shame because the food and ambiance was good, but the customer service was abysmal and soured the whole meal. They should let customers know that they close at 2:45 instead of 3:00 as posted on Yelp, Google, etc., deactivate Toast when closed and maybe try a little customer service that is reflective of the price point. read more

Ok, disappointing but I've already paid for it. Ok, then can you give me a beer and a house tequila? Sir that would be a couple dollars more. So, while we are enjoying our Queso Fundido and salad they bring our Entrees! We weren't ready and we didn't even have room on the table. I sent it back. Called the manager over and explained to him that a good wait person checks in on a customer before telling the chef to fire the entrees. He shrugged his shoulders and said: "That's the system to bring the food as soon as it ready". "You need a new system". "That's the system". And soooo on.... I then order two shots of tequila and the waitress has to charge us with handheld device. Tiny shots btw. It's feeling very impersonal now. This is my go-to place after hiking at the nearby trails or visiting friends that live in San Anselmo. I like how the restaurant is so colorful and vibrant and has a good outside patio presence. Taco Janes has been a favorite of ours for years, but we haven't tried it for a long time. We opted for a takeout meal of Red Snapper Tacos and a combo plate with a shrimp taco and a chicken enchilada. Both were excellent except for one problem... our tacos were limp and almost soggy, making them impossible to pick up. I'm guessing the closed takeout trays steamed them to the point of them falling apart. Still, the flavors of everything were excellent! I also appreciated the chips and their special bean salsa, and that the chips were very lightly salted rather than the expected heavy salted. Perfect! I also had a coupon for a birthday tres leches cake, but unfortunately they were sold out. Guess we'll have to do another takeout soon! read more

Not our favorites: Although we tried the Chariza and Pabil tacos, we didn't want the whole plate with salad rice and beans. You cannot order ala carte and with 2 tacos to an order for $16 for the plate, it's not something I'd recommend if you're looking for just tacos. The mezcal marg was also decent but not my favorite. I am so torn about this. I really, really want to like Taco Jane's more than I do. All my friends rave about it and the staff are so crazy nice that I feel bad for feeling so mediocre about the restaurant. I've been there for dinner multiple times and I've ordered the family taco platter to go. Staff/Service- 10/10 Food- 8/10 I love the mateo cake. Love it. I might just go grab a few mateo cakes for lunch because I love them so much. The mole sauce is also excellent. Other than that, I feel like everything is just ok. The rice and beans have no flavor and the chips were bland as well. I'm not sure why Marin hates flavor so much. Add spice! Add heat! Add something! The margaritas were good but could have used more kick. I will say that everyone in my dinner party loved their food so maybe I am just an outlier? The family taco platter is a great option if you want to grab food and go, or you are having a social gathering and want to keep the food easy. You have to stand in line to order and then grab a table anywhere you like. Their staff is very friendly and their owner is really nice and welcoming! We got the jackfruit, chicken and red snapper fish taco plates. They all came with rice and beans and a organic spring salad. All the dishes were awesome!
