Taco Burrito Box, had it to go, but no box

It was a sad day when I've been craving hard shell tacos and was told they no longer serve FIERY Tacos. Sure, cooler ranch is nice, but where's the soft burn you get with every bite and the ssst you make when go for your next shell? All I can talk about now is the space itself. The only noticeable change is the giant circle light thing with KFC's logo. Not sure where to get my taco fix now, the best I can settle for is go basic and request but loads of diablo sauce

    In the drive through!!!

Yesterday was the day and, boy it did not disappoint. I grew up in Texas and we call the good tacos (cow tongue, cheek, etc.) "ghetto tacos" and this is right damn near it! Ironically when I first moved to Lowell, I actually lived upstairs from this convenience store. It's changed store owners at least 3 times that I've known but right now-- this is where it's at. Came in not hungry but hoping to get the husband what he calls "slippery chicken" which can usually be found in Dominican and Puerto Rican spots. Instead, to my surprise, the first sign I saw was of Birria Tacos!! I've seen these all over social media and it's craze from the west cost to NYC. Behold, we now have them in Lowell, MA-- and it's fire. While waiting for my food, another customer was speaking Spanish with the clerk and I could've sworn I heard the word "ceviche". I damn near hit the floor. I asked the old guy, "cebiche?", he nodded and went to the fridge of soft drinks and pulled out a plastic cup of what I've always known to be Mexican Shrimp Cocktail. Of course I had to grab that also, since I wasn't hungry. It came with some bomb ass warm tortilla chips. Being not hungry, myself, I left the convenience store with 1 lengua (tongue) taco, 3 birria tacos, a cup of shrimp ceviche, and a glass bottle of grapefruit soda and oops-- a coke for the hungry hubs.

The food is fantastic, fresh ingredients and balanced, plus it's affordable. The women that work…read morehere are super friendly and work really hard to complete orders fast.

As this is Latinx heritage month, seems like a perfect time to finally check them out. This is a tiny little store front. Most of the building is taken up by kitchen and storage. There are 2 two-tops and 1 four-top table for dining-in. Tables are very nice and the area was clean. An open kitchen over looks the dining area. A cashier stand, where you order, is to the left of the entrance. Menu boards are located on the wall above the open kitchen. A cooler across from the cashier holds bottled soda, water and tea. The cashier was super personable and answered a couple of silly questions from me. (I always have questions. So many questions!) I had to try the empanadas of course and they offer several varieties. My SO got himself a pepperoni pizza. We both grabbed bottled soda. We had an opportunity to chat a little with the cook too who is also very nice. A parton who is clearly known to the staff came in and had a long, friendly chat with staff while we ate. Just before we left some high school students came in. This is absolutely a neighborhood spot. The pastry on my empanada is very good. Flakey, thin, holds together well. I would have preferred less pastry for the amount of filling. Most bites were air. The ground beef was seasoned well enough but I think I was looking for more spice and maybe a little heat. Still, it was enjoyable. The vegetable empanada was bell peppers, onions and mushrooms with a little bit of cheese. Same result. I was looking for more filling, spice and heat. Don't get me wrong. They are good. I did enjoy them. And for all I know, this is the way abuela makes them. Everyone has their own preferences. This is just me. Take it as you will. My SO enjoyed his pizza. That's all I got from him. Sorry I can't elaborate. This is a small store front right off a neighborhood. On street parking is free. You may have to walk a bit from your parking spot, but as mentioned, this is really a neighborhood spot the locals frequent. There does not appear to be a public restroom inside. I didn't ask. Staff were lovely. Food is good.

For the main course I got mofongo with creamy chicken. It was bland and the modongo was hard and dry. The cream sauce reminded me of Alfredo, but it was on the bland side. The chicken within it was dry and tasted like microwaved chicken breast covered in white sauce. Would try something else next time. My fiancé got the ribeye and that was cooked to his liking with good seasoning and very tender. The server was very nice, however very slow. Had to go up to her and flag her down multiple times throughout dinner and especially when we were trying to get the check. I had to keep reminding her because she would come then leave "to get it" but then went behind the bar and was talking to people. Then would come by and ask if we needed anything, and after the fourth time it was very annoying.

I had to travel up to Massachusetts on Monday and I was quite disappointed with the lack of a New England accent on anyone. We used to be a proper country. In any event, on Monday, I went to Mexica Burrito Grill. I met a man, on the line in front of me who insisted this place was good. I was skeptical because, I don't know this guy and why was he being so friendly? I ignored the warning signs and assumed he may be correct as he too was a husky gentleman. I ordered a burrito bowl with carnitas. I told them to include the rice and beans, because a man needs fuel that sticks to the ribs, along with double carnitas, cheese, and nothing else that sounded like it belonged in a rabbit's lunch. No vegetables, no salsa, no cilantro trying to ruin a perfectly good meal. They delivered. The carnitas were delish, properly seared, and tasted like actual pork that had been treated with respect (salt, heat, and time). The rice and beans did their job, simple, hearty, and not pretending to be anything fancy. No lectures about "fresh ingredients" or where the avocado came from. No one cares, Chad. Just a solid bowl of meat and starch, which is how God intended bowls to be used. I ate it back at the hotel with a black coffee and a pocketknife for portion control. Felt like I could split logs afterward. This is acceptable food. I may return. Highly recommended for men who understand that beef or pork are staples, with enough rice and beans to keep the machine running.

The tacos were sitting in a pool of it after walking from the counter to a table and were leaking a lot while eating. One taco had a ton of salsa and the other two had next to none. Also pretty light on cheese. The roja had good flavor but wasn't very spicy. Ended up adding Valentina hot sauce that they had available. The meal was a bit cheaper then other places in the area.
