We were looking for a local Mexican restaurant. Yelp! folks did great again suggesting a local restaurant. On street parking, make sure to pay for parking during the weekdays! With that said, the interior looked very familiar to us, as we were just in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Decorated with very bright colors and these beautiful tiles throughout the restaurant. Location has a bar and plenty of seating in both sides of the restaurant. Our waiter was super friendly. The food was delicious. The super nachos were impressive for the amount of meat to nacho. This place is an absolute scam. My daughter has been here multiple times, always spoke highly of it, and never had an issue--until today. She went with her friends and the waitress tricked her. Instead of the usual chips and salsa, the waitress asked if they wanted chips & guacamole "this time," which clearly sounded like it was being offered as complimentary. My daughter, not knowing any better, said yes. Turns out, it wasn't a kind offer--it was a sneaky upsell that jacked up her bill. On top of that, they completely butchered her friend's order multiple times until she gave up and refused to eat. Then, when the bill came, my daughter--who was just trying to enjoy herself with her friends--got slammed with nearly a $40 tab. She was devastated, called me in tears, and told me she felt scammed by the waitress. And you know what? She was. I called the restaurant to get this sorted out, only to be met with pure rudeness. Asked for a manager and was told, "There's no manager here." Got hung up on. Called back, asked politely again, and was told flat-out that no managers would be available. Completely unprofessional. This place is NOT what it pretends to be. If you want to scam teenagers out of their money and treat customers like trash when they call for help, then congratulations--you've nailed it. But if you're a family looking for an honest meal, don't even bother. read more

This place is in walking distance from My friends house. We sat outside to grab a bite, we were hungry and I only got a photo of the complimentary chips. The food was good. We actually sat outside and never actually went into the restaurant so I don't know what it looks like on the inside but I did enjoy the outdoor seating. The service was good. read more

What a perfect way to spend an afternoon! The food was delicious, as were the drinks - we had mojitos. Our server Sarahi was very attentive. We started with chips and salsa, plus guacamole. Really yummy! I had fajitas that sizzled on the side, and included a side of lettuce, pico de gallo, and beans. Tortillas served separately. We ate outside, and it was wonderful! It was my first time in Lowell and I tried this place and really liked it! Service is fast and friendly. I LOVED that as soon as I sat down they offered chips and salsa, and immediately asked if I'd like some queso or guacamole. I love that because then you can enjoy your chips with all your extra stuff, rather than waiting for them to take your drink order, and then ask for your food order and by that time if you'd wanted some queso, all your chips would be gone anyway. It's just a little detail of good timing, but I loved that proactive question. The house salsa was quite good and had a nice little kick. I ordered the Combo #1 for my dinner and it came out quickly. This combo includes enchilada suiza, a ground beef taco in a crispy shell, and a chicken flauta. The presentation was beautiful, and I loved that there was sour cream on the taco AND on the side. Everything was delicious. I had the cadillac margarita and it was tangy and freshly made, although not very strong at all. The restaurant is super cute, and I enjoyed the brightly painted and carved furniture. Would recommend this place to anyone in downtown Lowell! read more

Highly recommend El Potro and adding it to my list of favorites! The service was great - so friendly and kind. Food was delicious - beginning with the complimentary fresh yummy chips and salsa. Also ordered the guacamole (though a little pricey, it is so so good), the Pesado de la Casa, and asked for the homemade habanero hot sauce, which is extremely flavorful and adds a delicious kick! A lot of restaurants these days have food that is too salty or too greasy, and I really appreciated that the at El Potro was neither too salty nor fatty. Sat outside, as it was a beautiful day. The area had a mask mandate and the staff didn't let us in when we first walked in because we forgot our masks. They weren't offering any disposable mask for customers. I had to walk around to different stores to get a mask to get into this place. I request the Business to provide disposable masks to customers if they happen to not bring in a mask. The food was very average, I got chicken fajitas - the rice and sides were regular. However, the fajitas had just chicken, onions and green peppers. I usually expect it with tomatoes, pineapple and a few more veggies too. The seasoning was too bland too. They had the regular bottled beer available too. read more

My partner and I went to the place for a date. A cozy, small interior with a Mexican touch to it. The moment you walk in, you will feel like it's family, being greeted by staff to sit you down. We came here for my sister and her husband's birthday celebration. It's a nice small, cozy atmosphere. The food, the music, and our sever Santos and his team were great. I have been really curious about El Potro since moving back to the area. Prior to moving back, I've been fortunate to have lived in different cities along the southern border and had access to amazing Mexican/Central American food consistently. I still haven't really found my spot here in Lowell/greater Boston. I ordered the combo #1, and the chicken flauta was missing. I didn't catch this when I picked up my food initially, but was bummed it wasn't included. The taco was unfortunately soggy/the shell wasn't crispy; and the enchiladas suizas were pretty dry and not particularly flavorful. I'd say my favorite part of the meal was the refried beans, which I used to help balance the dryness of the enchiladas. The server who I also interacted with when I picked up my food was pretty standoffish. No doubt times are tough, maybe she was having a bad day. But after paying over $20 for a so-so meal, it downgraded it to a 2 star experience overall. I have checked out the reviews on this page, and do give props to the manager for taking in the constructive feedback, so maybe this may help in the future, as well. read more

Six of ate here last night around 5:45 pm ... it was busy, but they cleared a table for us quickly and efficiently ...btw, they don't take reservations. Service was excellent .. prompt, friendly, and efficient...zero complaints there. Everybody was delighted with their meal and the queso appetizer. Only downside was that two of us ordered 'house margaritas' which were watery, rather tasteless, and clearly had very little tequila (neither of us could taste any). My wife's blue margarita met her standards. Overall, a good experience - especially for a larger group, but they need to improve at the bar. Addendum: Thanks for your response, though it seems canned and is pretty much the same that every Yelper gets. If I'd read other reviews of your margaritas before arriving, I wouldn't have ordered one. You get consistently poor marks in that arena. read more

PRICY! Boston prices for lunch, but really delicious. I had the shrimp tacos and they were plump and flavorful and delicious, as were the rice and the refritos. Everyone on the table was happy. But its expensive for lunch! My son eats there often and he's a broke student (eating on moms wallet!), but he is a food snob and wouldn't go often if he didn't like the food! Its great! And service is even better!!!!! I forgot to mention fresh and plentyful chips and fresh salsa I shouldn't pig out on, and my kid reports that the margaritas are worth it. I didn't think there'd be a day where I was impressed with dining here. Been here in the past (when they first opened) and they usually forget a sauce or something I asked during my visit. Since then, El Potro isn't anywhere on my list unless they're the last resort. Well, that night, I ordered something aside from the usual burrito or taco, the Pollo en Mole. This dish was delicious!! This was chicken covered with some kind of sauce that was sweet, with a little kick of spice. I devoured it all, along with the rice and beans. The best part was the dish felt light and clean. Went here yesterday before a concert. Tiny and packed, a little bit of a wait, but GREAT, authentic food and excellent service. Worth the wait. Clean restrooms. Margaritas were tasty and strong. Our party of 4 all enjoyed our meals - fish tacos, fajita salad, and two burritos. The steak in my salad was tender and flavorful, and the veggies were fresh. We had an amazing time at El Potro's Lowell location this past weekend. We went for an early dinner (around 4) and it was surprisingly super busy. We started with margaritas, chips, guac, and queso. The queso was so creamy and rich, I absolutely loved it. We then got some entrees; my fiancé got the carne asada burrito and I got the shrimp enchiladas. The sauce that the enchiladas were in was INCREDIBLE, and the steak in the burrito was so well seasoned and delicious.
