Mediocre food and terribly slow service, food was better before they added rice in everything!

Big Thicket BBQ

Big Thicket BBQ

(42 reviews)

This is the BBQ we've been missing. It's located in downtown DeRidder in an old bungalow converted…read moreinto a restaurant and run by some lovely people who really know their food. It's larger than it appears and is very clean. It is handicapped accessible, thankfully, with a ramp on the side and very large bathrooms. The menu is a la carte and the meat is sold by weight, so it is easy to over order by mistake. (I did, severely underestimating how much 1/3 of a pound was. So, I ended up with a generous portion of leftovers for my lunch the next day. Definitely a win-win scenario.) My husband and I both had the 1/3 lb pulled pork and a link of the jalapeño cheddar sausage (also approximately 1/3 lb). There was their own BBQ sauce on the table that others in my party liked, but I thought the pork was very well seasoned as is. The sausage was probably the best I've had, with a great jalapeño taste and lots of cheddar chunks throughout. The casing had a wonderful snap. My DIL had the brisket, so juicy and tender, and my son had the smoked turkey - really a superior meat. I chose the macaroni & cheese as a side. It was super creamy and had green chilies throughout, giving it a nice heat. My husband had the baked beans which he really enjoyed. The other side ordered was the tater tot casserole. That was knock-your-socks-off delicious. It made the famous chain restaurant ("CB") version of hash brown casserole pale in comparison. Seriously, it was unbelievably delicious. Every plate (tray) came with a homemade cucumber pickle and pickled onions, nice to cut the delicious meats' "fattiness." There was also a sweet cornbread muffin that tasted more dessert-y than side dish-y. A lovely young gentleman came out of the kitchen while we were eating to offer us a sample of their "beef bacon" they were trying out. It was really interesting, thin jerky-like beef, but tender with bacon flavoring. If they do decide to offer it, it could be a hit for them. Not picture - my husband got a banana pudding to take home. He thought it was one of the best he's had. The rest of us were too full to think about dessert, something we regretted later on. Yes, this place is a bit on the expensive side, but it was absolutely worth every penny. The meats and the sides were so high quality and delicious, homey food with a five-star treatment.

The Brisket at this place is amazing. All of the sides are…read morebursting with southern flavor and the staff couldn't be any better. The second you walk across that wooden front porch and swing open the gateway to country charm and southern hospitality. Your taste buds are screaming from the mesmerizing smell of the "unruhly" beast. If you are coming to deridder and want to satisfy your Barbecue addiction. DO NOT let this place go without trying.

Festival Tacos - Complementary salsa and chips

Festival Tacos

There are so many Mexican restaurants in Deridder but festival tacos is one of my favorites…read more Service can be a little slow sometimes but the food is solid and the staff are friendly. They have unlimited complimentary chips and salsa. I always get the taco salad and my husband always gets the torta which comes with fries. They have a pretty extensive menu and plenty of drink options. There are both outdoor and indoor seating.

We came in during the week for a late lunch/early dinner, so missed the rush of customers. We received awesome service. As soon as we were seated, we received complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were salty and warm and the "medium" salsa was very nice and had a good heat to it. Later on, the waiter brought us another basket and two more salsas: a salsa verde (green, mild) and a creamy hot salsa. They were all good, but I preferred the medium myself. We had a bowl of queso to go with the chips and it was enjoyed by all. My DIL had the Chile rellenos with the chicken Tinga (shredded chicken & veggies). She loved it. Lots of soft cooked peppers and plenty of chicken and cheese. My son had the Birria quesadilla, a unique way of serving Birria. My husband and I both had the Cheesy Birria Taco plate, which came with 3 tacos, rice and beans. The Birria tacos were so delicious. The meat (shredded beef) was incredibly tender and savory, with generous melty cheese. The consommé dipping sauce was super yummy. My husband opted to swap out one of his tacos for chorizo meat done in the same style and he thought it was fabulous. The beans and rice were pure comfort food. Flavorful and every bite perfect. Now my son had Sprite because he was the designated driver but the rest of us indulged. My husband had a Modelo Negro with a frosty mug and then had an almost Tequila Sunrise. He loved both. My DIL and I both had margaritas. They come in 3 sizes, regular, large, and jumbo. We were very pleasantly surprised by the size of the large. (Just how big is that jumbo? LOL) She had the passion fruit margarita and I had the regular lime, both were absolutely delicious. Our waiter was fantastic. I didn't get his name, but he was a handsome, tall gentleman from Puerto Rico. He treated us like royalty, while being super efficient and kind. If you are in the area, you really must try Festival Tacos. My kids come here often and bragged about how good it was. Definitely not an exaggeration.
