It was okay but when I got home I immediately ran to the toilet. Whatever I ate made my shit come out of my asshole like fire.

This is a small Mexican convenience store and taqueria. I spent the day working a couple doors…read moredown. When I got really hungry, I asked the manager of the shop I was working in about the tacos at this store. She said they were great. She said she usually gets the chicken tacos and loves their sauce. She said she also gets the chips and salsa and enjoys it. Well, I got there and found a very simple menu with just a few items. I should have taken a picture. I'll have to do that next time. I tried to order a tamal but she said I was too late in the day. I ended up getting two tacos with carnitias and one pastor. They came with a bit of cilantro, onion, and a slice of avocado. The tortillas (corn, of course) had been prepped on the griddle but not enough for my liking. I prefer them to be cooked a bit more, nearing crispy while still remaining foldable. It means the juicy insides won't soften it up cause it to tear. This is probably just my personal preference. Now, lets talk about the insides. That was probably the best carnitas I've ever eaten. I usually find them a little bland and think they need a good sauce. You could have given me a bowl and these to eat by themselves and I would have been thrilled. It was a mix of tender, juicy chunks and smaller pieces that crisped up just a little on the griddle. They were filled with flavor and amazing. Next, I got to the el pastor taco. This was mostly chunks of good pork with a red sauce. The sauce was great. It definitely had a kick but it was just full of flavor and not insanely hot. I'm not sure which one I liked better. All the tacos were loaded with meat. The bottom line? Next time I'm working in Burgaw, I'll try to get there earlier because I really want to try the tamales. I'm usually disappointed with them from most places. If they use pork that is seasoned half as good as the tacos, they'll be great.

Maybe it was all the talk about how good it was but we were let down :(…read more I always say sometimes expectation is the thief of joy. That was the case at Shaka Taco. No issue with the wait and the servers and staff were working hard and kind. That said, the prices were high for what you got and not having cups for water increased the dissatisfaction. We did enjoy the chips and the red salsa was good however our meals outside that were fairly flavorless. Pretty sure the only thing that was raved about was the Sangria Slush. I'm a fan of doing something and doing it well but not so sure outside the slush or the shrimp taco what the signature dish is here but it wasn't the specials, the seafood nachos, the beef, ahi tuna tacos.

4.5 Overall - A real beach-feel taco shack, less than a block from the ocean. Outdoor seating (no…read moreindoors) and weathered wood lends authenticity to the Surf City vibe, but then one also needs to contend with the birds and heat (minus the ocean breeze). We drove here with friends from Jacksonville (NC) and experienced the food and service and, afterwards said we'd definitely return here. Why? Tacos. We ordered four - Tuna, Shrimp, Chicken, and Veggie- all on a soft corn tortilla. Each one packed a mouthful of flavor combinations that were distinct and memorable. My blackened and seared tuna took a different turn with the bacon, yet it melded well with the cabbage and the spicy mayo. My favorite - the blackened and grilled Shrimp taco - included Asian slaw and sweet chili sauce that complimented the char. Our friends ordered the seafood nachos which frankly looked liked the shrimp and other seafood were overwhelming the chips! If I had been hungrier, I would have ordered this monster! Soft drinks (Coke products), adult beverages, and "Sweet Treats" are also available. The bathrooms are inside the surf shop. Paid parking is right next to the store. (If a song could be adapted for this review, it would start, "Shaka, Shaka, Shaka, Shaka Tacos)
