    University Club of Palo Alto

I absolutely love the University Club of Palo Alto!…read more For me, the highlight is the pool. I love swimming here--there's an excellent lap pool where you can sign up for lanes, a diving board for extra fun, and plenty of open swim time for families. Kids can't get enough of the swim team, and there's even a shaded baby pool that's perfect for infants and toddlers. The tennis courts are top of the line, whether you're playing just for fun or competitively. The tennis pros are fantastic, and the whole tennis community here is great. Pickleball is also really taking off--it's always fun and social. The gym has everything you could want: Peloton bikes, free weights, machines, and a full range of classes. Beyond fitness, people also gather for bridge, mahjong, and other activities, so there's something for everyone. The food is excellent, the full bar is always a plus, and the events calendar is packed. There are great adult activities (salsa dancing, wine tasting, Aloha nights) and plenty for kids too (kids' night out, movie night, and more). Best of all, the community is welcoming and friendly. It's easy to meet people here, and many members end up making lifelong friends. All around, it's a wonderful club--I can't recommend it enough!

It's such a fun way to stay active, and we love that we can play together as a family. The courts are in a beautiful setting, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. We have lighted dedicated courts that are the best in the valley. Several members of our club have won major pickleball tournaments nationally. Our men's elite team has won the peninsula league the last two sessions. Beyond the game itself, one of the best parts has been meeting new friends--we've connected with such a welcoming group of people. It's been the perfect mix of exercise, community, and family time in a great environment.

They have a pool, tennis courts and the staff is wonderful. The food for a country club was a surprisingly very good.

I have to say if you are planning some sort of large event there is alot to like here. First off the grounds a quite nice, well kept and tidy. Its a short walk from the parking lot to the hall. Inside the accommodation are what you would expect from a banquet hall. Nothing exciting, but okay for most events (Its a union meeting not a wedding so we don't do alot of decorating, but the space itself is nice and can easily be dressed up). The staff is fantastic. The service is consistently excellent, and its almost seamless. With 150 people there eating and drinking for almost 7 hours there are going to be the inevitable spills and drops. The staff handles these events with ease and never misses a beat. I see alot of the same people each year and their experience no doubt shines through. The food is also pretty good for these types of events (It was not you usual large function rubber chicken meal) . The Caesar salad is well dressed and tasty. The spinach salad was a nice counterpoint with its sweet dressing, dried cranberries and walnuts. The potato wedges were crispy on the outside and had a touch of rosemary tot hem. The beef was well roasted (perhaps a bit too done for my taste but hey they were feeding 150+) but fairly tender and the sauce was savory, beefy, perfection. Plenty of Iced water and the usual coffee and tea suspects. The only downside is that the parking kind of sucks. Its clearly geared for the Country club and not large events. Our 150+ easily overflowed the lot and people had to park up to 100 yards away.

Having said that, it runs more or less smoothly and people treat each other kindly and respectfully. If your focus is on the meditative aspects of practice, and you'd like to interact with others that have that focus as well, then this is a fine place.

This center is affiliated with the San Francisco Zen Center, also founded by Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki,s o they are mainstream, excellent pedigree, nothing cult-ish here. Unlike the San Francisco Zen Center, the program for beginners was intense even for me, and I don't think my attention span is as gnat-like as some people. We began by meditating after about a ten minute talk. We sat for 20 minutes, did about 15-20 minutes of walking meditation, took a 10 minute break, did another 20 minutes of meditation, then another 10 of walking, then another 20 of sitting. I was overwhelmed. All the books I read said to start a few minutes at a time, and that even that would be a challenge. I was really struggling. And I had no idea what the purpose of the meditation was. What exactly had I been reading about? If I could focus, to what end? This class was mainly meant to get you started on focusing your mind, and getting your body used to the posture. The nun was very nice, the facility was clean, tranquil, and the gardens beautiful. But this was just too intense for me, and from what I understand, much more intense than the beginners classes at the SF Zen Center. The Wednesday night sessions also have beginner's session, followed by 40 minutes of sitting, followed by a service, then a dhamma talk, which I'm sure would be great to listen to, but I got the distinct impression you couldn't come for just the talk. I don't expect to be good at this overnight, or to gain understanding or insight even after a few years at it, but I think I may need more guidance and a more gentle beginning. If you want to start though, these people are nice and you'll have plenty of time to think, focus, and work on posture.
