Carson Mansion - taken during a sunny afternoon

Carson Mansion

This is a beautiful home, one of the most photographed homes in the country. It's a beautiful…read moreexample of Queen Anne Victorian architecture. The home was finished in 1889, and was built for lumber baron William Carson. He and his family lived in the home for many years. It was in danger of demolition, as maintaining such large historic homes became costly. A group of local businessmen bought the home in 1950, and turned it into a private club. They have since spent millions and millions of dollars to restore and maintain the home. While it is absolutely beautiful from the outside, unfortunately, it is not open for tours. However, if you happen to know a member of the club, or if you are invited to an event such as a wedding, office party, etc. at the mansion, you can get a tour. It's a very nice home on the inside, and the highlight is the cupola at the very top, which Mr. Carson used to observe his business interests. If you would like to see what the inside looks like, you can Google the phrase , "Carson mansion interior."

Beautiful Victorian architecture!…read more Went up north for the Memorial Day weekend for the redwoods but had to make a stop to check out the famous Carson Mansion. Love the green tones of the home and varying rooflines. At first I was surprised that there was no placard with a summary of the place but then I noticed a small sign. It was fun to see the sign at the front of the gate that had a QR code to scan and it'll take you to a Spotify listening to learn about the history of the place. Very cool, because this way you can listen to the history of it via your phone at either the site at that moment or even play it on the drive back. It was unique and something I haven't seen before! We took our time and appreciated the view because if you turn to the left you can also observe the water and pedestrian walkway corridors in town. If you're in Eureka and even only have 5-10 minutes to spare, I recommend swinging by the Carson Mansion to get a taste of high quality architecture, unique views, and a lil history moment!

Headwaters Forest Reserve is an amazing place and full of natural beauty! The Reserve is managed by…read morethe Bureau of Land Management in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The trails are well maintained and there is a decent size parking lot. This Reserve protects 7,472 acres of old growth redwood groves, other forest stands, streams, and wildlife. This is an amazing place to go hiking at there is a Headwaters Education Center if you want to learn more about this area. There are different hikes you can take varying in length. Some of the trails are paved and some are unpaved. Dogs and bikes are allowed on some of the trails and not on others. The Elk River Trail is the longest trail and it is 11 miles roundtrip. This area is so peaceful and tranquil and loved that this area has been preserved so that everyone can enjoy it!

Overall, the high review comes after the expansion of their parking lot. If you are familiar with this place you will know that it used to be a two-way entrance now it is a one-way. Careful when coming in because a car might be backing up or confused it is a one way! I highly appreciate that on the trail they consistently have signs to show you if you are allowed off trailing or not. It is helpful to see a map in case you are unsure how far you want to go in. Take into consideration the amount of miles going in and out. Usually my partner and I go up to the 2nd mile maker which is the bridge overlooking the river. And building up your tolerance from there.

City of Eureka - 05.26.25 funny how Yelp won't post the photo because of the business name so here's their Instagram page: @dicktaylorchocolate

City of Eureka

City of Eureka as a visitor [Eureka CA]…read more We saw and did a lot more in the City of Eureka this time around when we revisited during the extended Memorial Day weekend 2025. Each below have their own a separate review. New to us: * Sequoia Park & Garden - the garden featured a wishing well and a gazebo. Lots of flowers in bloom which is generally between May and September. * Sequoia Park Zoo and The Redwood Sky Walk - The Sky Walk is accessible only through the Sequoia Park Zoo. Enjoyed both attractions! The suspension bridge was my highlight but I also really liked seeing the flamingos! * Fort Humboldt State Historic Park - cool history where future U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, served as a Captain and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War. This place is said to be haunted. * T.J. Maxx - just passing time before movies. As we were about to leave town to head back home we stopped by downtown on Memorial Day. Many businesses were open including: * Old Town Square - historic charm and for the most part I didn't see too many homeless people on the streets as many have mentioned in their reviews. We came around 10:00a. * Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate - located right on the waterfront of Humboldt Bay. Sampled some artisanal chocolates and enjoyed a Browned Butter Rice Krispy Treat from their cafe bar. * Los Bagels - tried their Scrambagel for the first time. Very good in organic sesame seed bagel. This is a cafe with Mexican and Jewish influence. Revisited: * The Donut Mill - Ham & Cheese Croissant for breakfast * Broadway Cinema - "The Last Rodeo" [an Angel Studios production] * Brick and Fire Bistro - featured in DD&D twice... first one in and we got to sit inside the main dining room this time. Had the Kobe Fettina Steak again. We've pretty much explored all we wanted to see in the City of Eureka so won't be back in a long while. We'll probably revisit again in a few years. This is our 2nd visit to Eureka in 2 years and I like this town more and more. The biggest draw is…read morethe weather. It is SF weather at affordable prices then there is Eureka's progressive culture. We live in Silicon Valley for now but will retire in the next 10 years so we are looking for our next home & Eureka is very high on the short list. I love the historic district, it is 1 of our favorite places to hang out. Eureka has many murals all over town which was fun to check out. We have heard so much about the unhoused situation, but honestly, we had no problem with them. In fact, the unhoused people we came across the whole time we were here were just as friendly as the locals - they said hi and told us to have a great day. The only other place unhoused persons had said hi to me and talked with me was in Fremont. I work in Fremont and love it. Eureka is not a big place compares to Fremont or Sunnyvale but it has 2 of the best grocery stores in town: Eureka Natural Foods & the Co-op. I love both shops. I love the spirit, the politics and the friendly people here. I shall continue to come back and stay longer each time....
