The choco frito had a light batter on top and you could tell it was really fresh because it was so light and bouncy. The bolinhos de bacalhau were also a highlight; creamy potato filling with codfish mixed in. The asparagus and jamon with scrambled eggs provided a nice balance to our meal. I'm always a sucker for well made scrambled eggs. My favorite dish by far was the arroz de pato. It was packed with smoked duck flavor, and accented with charred sausage and bacon on top. The dishes were on the smaller end, so we ended up getting 5-6 dishes for three people.

Then it started to fill back up again. Our waiter was a fantastic young man who was also a student but I failed to capture his name (hope to come back and provide later) whose service was FANTASTIC. I ordered the steak sirloin rare and it was perfect. I'm an architect and love the decor of the whole place and would recommend it highly. The second night we dined there we ate inside on the upper floor and I actually ordered the same damn thing. If I was to go a third time I would surely try something different but when you find something or someone you love you try to hold on.

Having experienced fado outside of Portugal I didn't feel strongly that it was a must-do, but when I found myself at night on the street that is known for fado I prioritized it. For the best fado experience I recommend an intimate space, hopefully crowded with people but also with a view to the performers. Tasca do Chico is exactly that place. The doorman told us that space was standing room only, at the (tiny) bar. From there we could see and hear the performers while ordering food and drink. We'd not been there long before we were offered an available seat at a table which caused us to order more food and drink and stay a little longer. The fado here is quite good, made even more enjoyable as the artists change quite frequently; a song or two and a new artist steps forward, all very talented and enjoyable to watch and hear. The fado places tend to have lines out the door and a doorman managing entry. A place across the street looked much bigger but the intimacy is, in my opinion, what makes the experience both unique and special. Even if you have to start at the bar, Tasca do Chico is a great place to experience fado.

I'm sitting here writing this review and crying a little on the inside that we in the States don't have such easy access to quality ingredients to make such a stand-out dish. Grilled bread, tomato spread, and the best jamón I've ever tasted. This was an order we added at the very end and I'm glad we did. 3. The sweet rice pudding with cinnamon ice cream and toasted rice krispies on top. I was almost too full to function by this point but still made room to demolish this dessert. We also got the grouper stew, which was pretty good, but at that point, I had basically gotten the same dish multiple times and this one didn't particularly stand out. Definitely make reservations! There are two seats on the street but I personally wouldn't want to sit there as there's a ton of foot traffic in the area (plus the cars drive pretty close too so you're also breathing in fumes and exhaust). The little burst potatoes were cooked just right as well - sometimes potatoes get dry when cooking --- Portugal has this absolutely figured out. And last but 100% not least - this was the best Sangria my husband and I have ever had. We tried at last 6 other pitchers at different locations that week and not a single one held a candle to this one... its *the* best.
