It's a bit counterintuitive; Taaza 1.0 is a Roanoke institution that's been around for decades. This offshoot opened up in Harrisonburg with a different chef and a different menu. The location is directly across the street from JMU's campus, and it is on the pricey side, but the experience and the food are worth it.
I will say that their opening time was listed at 4:30 and they weren't open at 4:35, but shortly after that, a significant number of people rolled in on a midweek night. I went for a baby corn dish fried with curry leaves and pepper, which I thought I'd take home, but ate all of, perhaps unwisely. They offer a special dal tadka, and if you look at it, the tadka (which is a small but potent dose of tempered spices) looked impressive, and it imparted a smoky, spicy flavor. I asked for 4/5 spiciness and received 4 dried chili peppers (perhaps this restaurant's spice rating is so literal that you get one actual chili pepper for each spice level). A cutting chai was poured in front of me, and my roti, like the rest of my dishes, tasted fresh.
Apparently the word "taaza" means "fresh", and I could not accuse them of delivering anything other than what they promised. read more
