The tables were packed like sardines in a can...barely enough room to sit down. Head server reminded us that we have only an hour and a half time slot for dinner. We then waited 20 minutes before another server took our orders, appetizer took another 20 minutes to be served. We didn't get our main dishes until an hour into our dining time slot. Because The Pantry crowds diners so tightly together, the place is extremely loud...so loud that I felt I like I was part of the adjoining tables' conversations. We could not hear eachother. It was impossible to hold a conversation. It was school cafeteria loud. We were unable to talk about the day and enjoy our meals...the noise was too distracting. Our food was nothing special. It tasted just ok. We expected it to taste better. The sauerkraut tasted pickled...like out of a jar. The red cabbage was overly sweet. The stew had only four chunks of beef. Overall, the food didn't taste fresh made. My wife could have cooked a better dinner at home. When visiting a new country, one expects better food (quality and taste) for 60 Euro. They loved their hot chocolates and they didn't make it too hot for our kids to enjoy, it was wonderful. The kids meal came with bitterballens, fries and salad and my kids licked the plate clean. I had the roasted chicken with dutch asparagus and chips, it was beautifully cooked. My husband had the lamb and again, perfectly cooked and we loved every bite. After seeing many other hotel guests eat french fries in the same area, my (non white) employee was asked to leave. This seemed targeted and aggressive. The hotel refused to apologize, stood their ground that it's ok for some guests to eat in the yard but not others, and they can enforce on whoever they like. The Dylan should be ashamed and are an insult to the location's history of feeding the poor and elderly. Shame on them and shame on the general manager for refusing to even apologize. Seems their empathy is reserved for elderly, white guests. If you are against classism and racism, don't support this business.

From check in to the front desk employees to the concierge to the breakfast employees to house keeping. I really enjoyed all three - especially my medium-rare veal, which was tender and flavorful. My mom had the asparagus soup and cod, and we both agreed the veal was way better. The cod tasted a bit too fishy. I also appreciated that they did not skimp on the scallops for my starter. The main issue was the very slow service. We showed up around 7:18 PM and didn't finish until 9:19 PM. The staff were friendly, but the pacing was awkward - it took a long time to even get the menu (we ended up grabbing it ourselves), and there were long gaps (10-15 minutes) between courses. It honestly felt like they were understaffed. Because of the delays, we had to adjust our evening plans and missed the train we originally wanted back to Amsterdam Centraal.
