In general, I dislike eating lobster in a restaurant as it is typically a snobby affair and I have yet to master eating and enjoying a lobster without having it all over me. But Den Beer is super informal, it is like you go to your grammy's house to eat. The owner is 78 years old, she is a real gem: fierce but welcoming. The food itself is why I keep on coming here and keep on wanting to come back: the lobster is just DELICIOUS. I've tried several styles over the years and all are finger licking good. The lobsters are always super juicy and cooked to perfection, it would be hard to pick my favorite style as all of them are the bomb but maybe the grilled flambe with whiskey has a slight edge in my book. I truly wish Gusje, the owner, a long life and good health as I will continue to come again and again!

For my entree I had ceviche, which I have never had so I tried it out. It was delicious, however the sweetness and the coconut flavor overwhelmed me toward the end and I wasn't able to finish it! Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

As a matter of fact I look forward to stop here each time we're in town. My wife and I made friends with Mario the owner a while ago...can't say that it has had any influence on our dining experiences. Their wines are not overpriced and well selected for their dishes. My favorite is their grilled octopus with with roasted potatoes and paprika spices...A very authentic Spanish dish and delicious. When in season their Matjes fish dishes with westfalian black bread are great too and can be a good appetizer to share. If the weather allows, outdoor dining is fun if not too crowded. There are not many alternatives for Fish-Houses in Germany that have such a variety. Of course, if there are large exhibitions in Dusseldorf places like this get overwhelmed and should be avoided.
