We had originally headed to the local family-run Bar Frape but were distressed to find it shuttered. Perhaps because they closed at 2000 and we were there shortly thereafter. Looking south along the river we spotted tables and chairs on the sidewalk so we headed in that direction. What we found was a trendy (and empty) bar that was obviously serving up what we were NOT looking for. That's when we spotted across the street what appeared to be a Eetcafe but upon further inspection found a joint billing itself as a Grand Cafe. Now, typically we steer away from Grand Cafes since our desire to impress is less than at times it should be. We have found Grand Cafes to not have any better food than Eetcafes and usually at twice the price. However, we decided to go outside our box and give it a try....and we are glad we did. Inside the D'Artagnan resembled more an Eetcafe than a Grand. While there was much more spit and polish than most Eets the atmosphere was that warm, comfy gezellig the Dutch are so wild about. We were looking for refreshment and a snack and ended up finding our favorite Dutch gin (2VC) which right then and there told us we were putting the rest of our evening on hold. We ordered the bouillabaisse and the anti pasta. Both excellent choices and between the both of us we could not finish. The bouillabaisse contained succulent portions of langostinos in a delicate seafood/tomato broth. The cheese bread on top was less a compliment than what was intended but good nonetheless. The anti pasta included ham, proscuitto, salami and pepperoni. Plus bread, olives, salad and scrumptious garlic mushrooms. With the exception of the pepperoni which was mealy, it was a great sampler. If you are not familiar with gezellig (gezelligheid) then you need to look it up or better, hang out here for an hour.... We will return.

A friend had found…read morethis restaurant he wanted to try so I joined him while not knowing what to expect At first glance this place gives the impression of an up-tight and boring restaurant. The staff however is very laid back but not without losing their professional service. Then there is the food: that's just amazing. The lobster was perfectly cooked and not dry (as I find often is the case). The meat was very tender and definitely worth the trip. It's not a cheap place but if it's quality food (and wine!) you're looking for, this is the place to be in Maastricht!

We had the entrecote, which was good with a pretty mustardy sauce though, and the tournadou, was had an amazing house sauce, but was quite rare. The pear pie was a little doughy but also yummy. This could be because the kitchen closed at 10pm and we got there at 910, but that didn't seem that close to us since the restaurant closed at midnight. Really great wines -- I especially recommend the Expressif! It's the cheapest red and super delicious if you like juicy.

They have parking on premises for 35 euros which is kind of a rip off but had no choice but to pay. When we checked in we didn't get a key because they weren't ready but picked them up 1 hour after. Room wasn't anything spectacular and the set up was kind of weird. The bathroom is in a enclosed glass case which I wasn't a fan of. The shower is a bathtub as well. They have extremely thin walls so you can hear everything in the halls. It was horrible. You can hear every door slam and conversation. I heard the cleaning people knock on every door while I was laying down. You can hear EVERYTHING. The room sucked but the lobby area is cool. I think you pay for that rather than the quality of the rooms. It is a unique stay but the actual stay wasn't the best.

She presents two types of bread--which you will need with all of the beautiful wines... My favorite course was the rabbit in plums and the creamy leek soup. All the pairings were well thought out. The menu has a pretty good variety and wines by the glass and bottles have suggested courses which takes alot of the guess work out of it. Dessert was lovely and the tea presentation is exquisite. She brought out a little tray of star chocolates(representative of Maastrict) at the end of the meal which was charming. The host, Annalise, is friendly and warm. I could not think of a better place for a special dinner in Maastrict - simply excellent start to finish. She also called us a taxi so we wouldn't have to walk 20 min back to the hotel. I would come back to Maastrict just so I can eat here again!

The fries were nothing special but the main was a tasty intro to local food, with a side of apple sauce to clean the palate. Mandarin sorbet was tasty and not overly sweet. It has some floral notes, perhaps honey? A lot of things are decorated with this amusing drawing of a man and woman at dinner. The man is licking his plate while the woman is holding it up like a mirror. Inside is on the smaller side, though I may be comparing to American size. It does get kind of loud.

It is very well known in Maastricht for good ambience and delicious food. and for their one Michelin star which they won for their good food. This restaurant is pretty much unique is all aspects. It is nestled in the old city just a hop and skip from the main market squares. The restaurant from the outside looks like an old farm house but inside is a hidden gem. The atmosphere is very French, modern, and fresh, it feels like a villa in the French countryside, I guess it has to do that they have an open terrace which is covered with grape vines all along the roof and a charming modern fountain giving it a very relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is pretty amazing and hosts local artist's paintings which you can buy. The service is very personal. The hostess and waitress tends to your every need, we sat of a party of 4 outside in terrace which was lovely. We already had a 4 course meal booked as it was the night of the open air concert Andre rieu. I forgot to tell them I didnt eat fish or shell fish and they quickly solved that, 4 course meal felt like a 9 course as between every course came a little welcome and treat from the kitchen. Each course came with a different selection of wines to compliment the dish. I was completely full after the 2nd course. After dessert we though yeah we made it but with coffee and tea came a selection of miniature cakes and then came a layout of home made chocolate truffles which was just too good to leave behind. The price is pretty pricey, I would say top end for Maastricht. But for atmosphere, evening and food it is simply a great deal. The evening was really great. The hostess and staff I have to say are really friendly, they come and chat to you and make sure everything is up to standards and that not only are you enjoying your meal but also the whole experience. The chef also comes out and makes sure you enjoying your meal. This time I was not alone and wanted to get a second opinion. Kate was not disappointed. We ordered the 4 cheese plate (Limburger, Brie, goat cheese and bleu). Two wedges of each along with a French roll, 4 slices of fruit and nut bread, apple syrup and a salad of grapes, walnuts and rocket all for $13.50. We accompanied this with her local herbed liqueur coffee and my Le Trapp. We had anticipated this to be a simple bar snack but in fact turned into our lunch of the day. We in particular loved the paring of the apple syrup over the bleu cheese and the Brie on the fruit/nut bread. All was yummy and beautifully presented. This was a perfect meal to linger over and be thankful for your blessings. We will come back.
