Half the store is typical tourist attire: sun-washed pastel hoodies with Captiva Island in brush script. Snow globes with black chunks and plastic carrots swirling around labeled Florida Snowman. (Get it?) Salt Life koozies and floating sunglasses straps. Most reasonably priced, especially for its proximity to South Seas. The other half is dedicated to your feet. Teva, Sanuk, Reef, Crocs and OluKai (the latter in only kid sizes?) in every imaginable design and style. I've always wondered when the standard price for flip flops would eclipse the $30 mark. Guess what, Copernicus? Today is the day. Still, these brands are made to last and it's still cheaper than the resort gift shop. Just don't lose them when the tide comes in!

When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by a young lady who kindly showed us their selection. Unfortunately, they didn't have tap shoes in the size we needed, but she went out of her way to bring out a new pair to check the fit. She was very helpful, and I appreciated her customer service. The disappointment came when I inquired about the price. While I was still planning to purchase ballet slippers, the older woman in the store abruptly told me, "So you know next time there's a $10 fitting fee. I don't do this so people can try on the size and buy online." The way she said it was condescending and made me feel very small, as if I had done something wrong by simply checking sizing. I even offered to pay the fee since I hadn't been aware of it, but the tone she used left me feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. If I had been told upfront that there was a $10 fitting fee, that would have been completely fine and understandable. It was the way it was delivered -- with bitterness and condescension -- that made the experience so hurtful. Just because I couldn't afford the $48 new tap shoes at that moment didn't mean I wouldn't have returned in the future or bought used items when available. Instead, I left feeling hurt and told my daughter to put away the ballet slippers I had planned on buying. This was an extremely disappointing experience. While the young lady was wonderful, the older woman's rudeness completely soured the visit. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, regardless of what they're able to spend.
