Let me start off by saying that if I could give 10 plus stars - I would. I live in California and…read morewas the caregiver for my mother who lived in Texas. One of the hardest things to do is to care for a loved one, especially thousands of miles away. My mom was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was in and out of the hospital a few times in a short period. Her health was failing and all I could do was pray. Once again, my mom was rushed to the hospital and I immediately flew out to see her. She was no longer able to care for herself as she lived alone. I needed to make sure that she would be safe after post-discharge and definitely wouldn't trust her going to a skilled nursing facility under the care of under-worked and underpaid staff, where she would be almost certain to have bed sores, etc., for lack of care. I didn't know which way to turn; praying for guidance, I was referred to Gilbert's Assisted Living from a rep from the Texas Adult Protective Services who gave high regards; THAT in and of itself speaks volume. God answered my prayer when I met and spoke to the owner, Mr. Ronald over the phone. He assured me that he would do everything he possibly could to help us Mr. Ronald stepped up to the plate like he promised. My husband and I went to the facility where we met Mr. Ronald and his right hand manager, Mrs. "Q' Quananda who was super helpful and professional. It was only by the grace of God that Mr. Ronald went to the extent that he did to assist us; visiting mom at the hospital shortly after the meeting with him at the facility, connecting me with additional resources, and making sure that my mom had a space at the facility upon discharge from the hospital. Unfortunately, my mom's health was declining quickly while in the hospital; the stay took a great toll on her. She was discharged and taken to Gilbert's. She was also under hospice care at the facility. Mr. Ronald was TRULY a BLESSING to me and my family, in fact, he treated us as family. They made sure that she had a favorite treats, foods, and anything else that she wanted. Although my mom had a short time to live after her hospital discharge, I couldn't see her in the care of anyone else but Gilbert's Assisted Living. Mr. Ronald and the staff were TRULY a blessing to us. They made sure that she was treated with dignity, respect, and like family. They also made sure to facetime me daily so that my mom and I could talk since I live so far away and I am forever grateful for that. Do not hesitate to consider this facility with it's attentive, loving, and caring staff. And trust me, they are NOT about the money. They are the epitome of a facility that has a heart for people and upstanding care. Gilbert's Assisted Living was truly a God-send. After he had become bedridden, she called me eight hours into her shift to find out how to change his diaper. I called the on-call person to get support. This person informed me that she was unable to go to clients homes due to family obligations that required her presence. I found this unacceptable and quickly found a nursing student to replace them. If you are reading this you are probably as clueless as I was when my quest began. Nursing students are a good source for sitter, as are nursing homes, since a lot of their staff moonlight. Questions I did not know to ask: Training for sitters? Support for sitters by agency? Background checks for staff?

My mother was a client with VA for a year. After the first 5 mos, the caregivers started changing…read more Over the course of a year, we had over 15 caregivers. With so much transition, we put in cameras. This was communicated with VA and a sticker was placed in the front door. The caregivers knew there were cameras. About 3 mos ago, my mom was very distraught. She said the caregiver had slept with her head down on the counter and had not been nice to my mom. We checked the video and sure enough, the caregiver had slept for over 90 minutes of her 4 hour shift. The shift was 4-8pm. My mom has dementia and is at a high risk for falling. The caregivers job is to have eyes on her and protect her from falling. Hard to do that when you are sleeping. We complained. VA sent the same girl back. The behavior repeated itself. If she wasn't sleeping, she was on her phone. We complained again. Three of the last caregivers we had either slept or were on their phone, or just blatantly ignoring my mom. There is a huge lack of training within this organization. I'd strongly advise Visiting Angels to spend more money on training and quality employees and less on marketing.
