They sell maps to help you get around, and the staff is ready to answer questions about any of the merch. They've got a hiking shoe selection that's hard to beat, and lots of the coolest latest gadgets that'll help you get over the river and through the woods. There's a second story to this place, I don't think there's an elevator available. One of my favorite things about this store are the displays- in the window and on the sales floor, they have little camping scenes set up, where they're highlighting their gear or clothing. This is a great outfitters to get outfitted in before going on that grand journey through the Great Outdoors.

Ok. This is my new favorite store…read more I was looking for travel related gear for an extended trip that would accommodate my minimalist travel style. Hooray for The Base Camp and their phenomenally trained staff. Expectations exceeded! The people were knowledgeable, looked up information when I couldn't find the exact thing I wanted, offered to order something not in stock, but could get from their store in Denver, and then let me explore other inventory. They also made it clear I was under no obligation to buy what they ordered if I changed my mind. No deposit, no restocking fee. Nothing. Available for answering questions, the employees didn't follow me around the store like I was going to steal something (well, maybe one person did on my second visit), give unsolicited commentary on every item I picked up, or attempt to drag me to every other similar, and more expensive, item. As my trip gets closer, I'll be back here to pick up those last minute miscellany. And, because The Base Camp has things for every type of outdoor adventure, it'll be an easy stop without the big-box hassles for future trips.

REI is what it is: a co-op of all things for exploring, living, and experiencing the outdoors…read more Cold weather, warm weather, hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, there's something here to fill your backpack and your sense of adventure. While this location is smaller than some, they've managed to cram a lot of things inside. Between that bit of everything and the employees there to answer questions and offer help, you should get an idea of what you need. Prices are reasonably consistent with other like-stores, but this location doesn't have the crowds levels of their competitors and that's a plus. However, because some businesses are still limiting the number of customers inside the store, I expect the "free to roam" won't last for long. As much as I like REI, I find it a confusing store in how they delineate sections of the store. There might be camping supplies in one main spot, but things you associate with camping might be over by the hiking things. While you don't have to be a co-op member to shop, there are some periodic "rewards" offered to members and on some goods, a reduced price. The Recreational Equipment Inc. store will likely not be a go-to place for me, only because there are local stores, I prefer; but even so, REI does carry some things I can't find at the other places, and it's always good to have options. For that, I like REI.

Now why only 3 stars? I, like many others, have spent $1000's at REIs across the country. My girlfriend and I both have our separate membership, so our household has spent twice that much. I say all of this to say I was thoroughly disappointed by not being left alone at this store. We were greeted probably 10 times each, sometimes multiple times by the same employee. After being greeted, they'd stick by oddly close, adjusting things that were already perfectly organized. This made me move somewhere else in the store just to be alone and think about the purchase I'd like to make. I did end up spending over $100 this day for some warm gear I needed. My girlfriend had several clothing items in her hand and instead of asking if she'd like a dressing room, she was asked if they could take them to the front for her. She said she'd like a dressing room first. Maybe this was a nice gesture to take a load off her hands, but with everything else, I am doubting the intent. If anyone was ready to spend money this day, it was definitely her. She bought a couple things, but we both agreed we were absolutely ready to leave and never return to this store. I've never stolen anything in my life and I felt really weird the entire time I was in this store. Because of this, I will just be going to Scheel's down the road.

Associate tells me that she keeps telling them they should carry some. Wandered back to look at the clearance shoes (just to see if there were any I can't live without) and went up front to purchase the items I had found. Inquire if the associate knows what length I need for my Sketchers (I was wearing them, seemed prudent) and informed she doesn't know. She only wears the slip ons. Told her good luck if your puppy/cat chews on them. Fine, corporate doesn't feel the need to carry replacement laces but shouldn't the associates have some sort of idea of the lace sizes? I for one can never figure out the length and constantly buy the wrong size. Customer service should be more than ringing up your purchases. They already don't help with getting boxes down for you nor sizing. Will I be back? More than likely, I own quite the collection of Sketchers so mildly addicted. Do I expect more from the associates? I had been hearing the Time Out Sports advertised on the radio for some time now. So when my feet…read morestarted bothering me a few weeks ago I knew I wanted to go in and talk with Cindy. Prior to arriving in store I did my research and found two pairs of shoes that might interest me. Upon arriving, we were welcomed and asked if we needed assistance. I immediately asked about the shoes. Later my husband said the Oofos slippahs might help to support my arches when I am not at work. One pair of shoes that I tried on made the ball of my left foot sore. The second pair I tried Hoka One One Gaviota provides the best support for plantar fasciitis which sounded like something I had. Bought the Gaviota and a pair of Oofos slippahs that also help support my arches. This along with stretching makes my feet feel good and I am now on the road to recovery. Hoka One One's are pricey however I see it as investing in myself since I walk 8-10 miles daily for my job. Got what I came for in a relatively reasonable amount of time. They have all the huckleberry jams, candies, wine, beer, etc. that you could ever ask for. They sell postcards, patches that depict the state of Montana. They also have rather healthful foods here- granola bars, pancake mixes. The other side of the shop is all musical instruments! They have everything from mandolins to guitars, bass, and even a trumpet! They sell guitar strings, amp wires, capos, anything you need for your musical needs. I think they even had the sheet music to Merle Haggard's "Big City" about getting dropped off in the middle of Montana. The clerk was pleasant, but minded her own business as I poked around and weighed the different huckleberry options. It seems that when things get cold in this town, a hot jam (whether musical or huckleberry) will always spice things up! Parking was a bit challenging, this place is located on the main strip of Red Lodge, so it's only street-side parallel parking. The shop was ADA accessible, but had some narrow aisles.
