Travelling around Sydney CBD is a bit of a pain atm due to the road closures but the app that predicts when the 'bus is due or gives a heads up about delays as been pretty good. The Opal card seems to work most of the time but when it doesn't you need to get onto the website to check that your logging off was recorded and you have not been assumed to remained on the 'bus endlessly going around the circuit. The one thing that has been a pain is the leaking aircons during the summer. Sometimes it is just a little drip but on other occasions seats are saturated and the water falls like rain. So it may seem a little unfair to accuse a whole transport system of being useless, but then again, is it? These days I like to get around on foot, as more often than not, it's quicker (and I guess it has some health benefits too). But a couple of years back, it wasn't that easy. I lived out in the far eastern suburbs, and the only way to get to and from anywhere was by taxi (gets a bit expensive after a while) or by bus. Unfortunately, the latter became my "preferred" transportation. Thankfully they're phasing out the really old buses, but they used to be the main type that serviced my area, and they were not much fun on a summer day - especially when the window was stuck so you couldn't open it that 4cms that you were allowed to open them. Another thing that bothered me about them, was the drivers. In particular there was one who may have given me such a bad impression that I just grouped all of them under the same banner. He was possibly one of the most miserable men I've ever come across, and the only words I ever heard him say were grunts. Although one time he did clamber out of his seat, lumber to the back of the bus, and abused a drunken guy who'd had the nerve to fall asleep. Turns out he was English - didn't make me feel too patriotic for the motherland! Now this isn't to say all drivers are like this - at least I hope they're not - and in fact, I've come across plenty of friendly ones, but the majority do seem to have a chip on their shoulder. The other thing that bothers me, is their size (the buses, not the drivers). Coming from a city where the norm are double-decker Goliaths on the road, these puny blue and white ones just don't cut it with me. Surely they must've had to consider rush hour during the designing process? Obviously not that much though. The bendy-buses are ok, but they're not exactly in the majority. OK, enough ranting - it's not that the bus won't get you to where you want to go (you may have to take a few of them though), it's just that it doesn't seem like a great system for a major world city, plus I've been wanting to get that bit about the grumpy driver off my chest for ages! read more

As a tourist I only had to take the bus twice. Once to Circular Quay to Coogee and once from Bondi back to Circular Quay. The buses were on time, air conditioned and a pretty smooth ride. If you download the Sydney Transportation app you can punch in your trip and they'll give you a schedule of all the buses (trains and rail) that will go to your destination with trip duration. It came in really handy while I was in Sydney. I have to add that the app is awesome but it was confusing as F finding the side I had to be on at Circular Quay. It's the number-one lament you hear about Sydney - the public transport is awful. That, and the traffic - although it's possible that one is symptomatic of the other. Having lived in Sydney for the better part of my life, I complained along with everyone else - but I didn't reallllllllllllly get it. Yes, the buses are unreliable and infrequent, but that's just how government buses are, right? Then, I spent six months living in Europe and was completely blown away - FOUR BUSES AN HOUR!?! To my HOUSE? Amazing. I've since returned, and really felt the vitriol everyone else has towards the Sydney Buses. They are slow, and incredibly unreliable. They are expensive, despite this. They are concentrated on certain areas while others are left out in the cold (Northern Beaches, put your hands up! Hills District, I'm talking to you!) They are staffed (generally) by rude and unfriendly bus drivers. They are WAY TOO HOT on summers days, probably because they are old and decrepit. They are stuck permanently in traffic, probably because the bus system is so average that everyone needs a car. Come on, State Government - get your act together! read more

Sick of spending half my life waiting for a late bus. Not once has my bus, the 348, been on time. Ever!! Really wish the bus system would get their shit together or update the schedules to reflect more accurate times. I'm waiting for the bus right now and it's over 15 minutes late which basically means I'm waiting for the next scheduled bus, meaning I have waited AN HOUR for a freaking bus!!!!!!!!!
