Yes it's just a state park but it has some nice walking trails and beautiful views . The bridge over the dam reminded me of the rainbow bridge over the Niagara river. They have paid parking for 10 bucks although today to my delight was free the booth wasn't open to pay lucky me . I parked easily I guess during October it's off peak season. My advice park at the bottom walk up to the top and then walk back down . Spend two hours or more enjoy take photos enjoy the sun and be one with nature .

The short stay, strolling and absorbing the sun was relaxing and peaceful- especially being up close to the Hudson River. One of the things hubs and I always appreciate is how much art work Peekskill has included in their landscape. And what a nice and quiet retreat it was for us. Even though it was a 20 minute trip heading north to come this way- this was the perfect way to slow down and go outside. Just step outdoors to appreciate this park's contemporary sculptures. And whether you're looking to escape with a book, come for a picnic or just lay on your blanket.....Isn't this what a breath of fresh air is all about?

Decent restroom facilities are nearby. *Adults- Seating areas to view the beautiful waterfront and stunning sculptures. Please see attached sculpture photos. Saw several men out fishing the day we visited. Across from the park, there's several places to eat. Unfortunately, cleanup needs to be done due to the Canadian geese droppings in the children's section.

People are walking their dogs and leaving their half-empty coffee cups all over, tossing single-use plastic bottles wherever they want, leaving packaged food wrappers to blow away in the wind, and having the audacity to pick up their dog's poop with poop bags only to leave the tied off bags laying on the ground. This park is for public use, and on top of that, is inhabited by many wild animals. This is their home, and park patrons are literally trashing it. Please be more considerate of your environmental impact by reducing your waste through use of reusable cups/bottles, and leave the space you occupy looking better than it was when you found it. Otherwise, stay home and trash your own house.

I could not believe the many areas for barbecuing with plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, and some areas even had volleyball nets,. Perfect for cookouts, and nice pavilions for events. There is also a beautiful scenic lake where you can rent row boats, and fish. It is also home to the largest pool of all New York State parks that can accommodate 3,500 people.

It also borders five towns: Danbury, New Milford, Brookfield, Sherman,and New Fairfield. This is a very popular place for all kinds of water sports, and bass and trout fishing. There are two state boat launches and many marinas for docking. The shoreline has so many magnificent homes, and don't be surprised if you see a seaplane landing or taking off on the lake. This lake usually gets very busy on the weekends in the summer.

At our age, we are able to drive a boat without a license but not many places will rent a boat to you without the license. Last year we rented a boat on Long Island, in the ocean water, and it was a fun experience. This year, we were talking about it with friends and they said they'd be down to come along so we decided to put together a group outing on a lake instead, especially since we would have the kids jumping in the water also. I really wanted to get a pontoon because we had an awesome time out on a lake in SC with my sister-in-law and family. Our first boat got canceled on us because needed repairs last minute, and after scrambling for a replacement boat, the boat we ended up renting became available for a date that worked for everyone so we jumped on it. We met up with the boat manager at a public launch site, packed up our stuff on the boat and got quick instruction about driving and different locations on the lake. We dropped off our guide and headed out to have some fun exploring. The lake is huge and there are plenty of places to drop anchor and enjoy the day We settled on a sandbar in the middle of the lake. There were quite a few boats already anchored so we didn't have quite a sandbar as we planned but the kids got in the water and we all got to swim some. Theres a restaurant you can actually sail up to called, Down The Hatch, right there on the lake. There were a few spots where you could anchor, that have calmer water and even a rope swing. The whole day was great, despite a few hiccups. This weekend there was a regatta so we were able to see a lot of sailboats which was pretty cool. There were lots of people on the lake enjoying the weather. The water is cold for the first couple minutes but warms up immediately after getting in. The water feels clean. It's constantly agitated and there were plenty of boats so the water was far from calm. I didn't have that slimy feeling I felt in SC after we got out. I brought my scuba mask to test it out and wish I could have seen the flooded city beneath the water. Very many years ago, the town flooded the former town in order to introduce hydroelectricity and when the water level drops, you can see the town's church bell sticking out of the water. We didn't have time for that but hopefully this is the beginning of an annual event with our friends. We only rented the boat for 4 hours but 6 hours would have been way better. The boat manager was very cool and we hope to do more business with him in the future.

The Maybrook Trailway should honestly be given the whole name from this point until New Paltz as it completes the connection. The trail runs aside a train track for which was once used for the Maybrook Line and Beacon Line for you history geeks like me. We started from the Hopewell end and walked for a couple of miles until we tire out. Two other times, we started another point in Stormville and walked west for about 2 miles. I know pretty much the whole line including the scenery along the way, it's quiet, and not a lot of action to be seen around. For those who enjoy peace and quiet, here you go. From what I've seen on the map, there are limited parking spaces for each trail spot at crossings. I'm hoping something would be addressed about that and even with bathrooms. There's more to explore on this trail.

The trail is not accessible for a 3-mile stretch. From Green Haven and then Eastbound is impossible…read moreto pass. Trees have fallen down virtually every 50 yards blocking passage. I carried my bike past about 6 trees and each time I saw another tree blocking the trail. I came across a clean up crew that told me the downed trees went all the way to Green Haven. I was 3 miles east of Green Haven when the mess started. There is also debris along the entire section which I was fortunate not to get a flat tire. The cleaning crew told me they have only 4 people and they will try to hire a contractor to clear the trees. There is no way a crew of 4 people could handle this. It would take them months to clean it up. (July 10, 2026)

I seriously adore this island…read more Small parking area off the main road and its legit in such a random spot that it gets very little traffic which i really appreciate. You walk along the inlet and up a hill, eventually you will on top of the 'mountain' that is also the metro north train tunnel. You can go around one of the fences and sit directly above the tunnel but we aware-- there is no additional fence before the drop. And if you drop..well, um. You dead. But otherwise its super cool to watch the train approach and feel it rumble underneath you. Going along a little further up the trail you will come to an outcropping of an old foundation and what is left of a fireplace and chimney. I believe this was one of the guest houses or the daughter homes belonging to the McAndrew's estate that is directly opposite the island. (That is another great hike with lots of ruins including an old race track, ice house and some old foundations.) Eventually you will start downhill and get to the waterfront which is gorgeous and has a great view of Haverstraw. It's a rocky area but can be traversed with slight caution, in order to skip rocks or fish or even hang out in the water. There's a beat up picnic table or two and some benches around in case you feel like packing a picnic. Please be sure to pick up after yourself though and keep the preserve clean for all! Cans are usually by the exit. No bathrooms either so be one with the call of nature.
