This is definitely overdue as the new school year already started and our daughter had to transfer…read moreto a new school due to re-zoning. Even so, I had to say that the VPK staff at Cunningham Creek is absolutely exceptional. Stacie Prosser is an excellent director and communicator that made the whole administrative side of VPK very easy. And Karen McKeon's commitment and passion for her students is unparalleled. If you are able to get your kid into Little Cardinal's Nest at Cunningham Creek, consider yourself lucky. Our daughter loved LCN every day and the program really prepared her for Kindergarten.

I just saw Max's review regarding The Little Cardinals Nest (VPK) at Cunningham Creek Elementary…read moreand I concur with everything he said. The staff was absolutely incredible and they made us feel like we were part of their family. Ms. Karen is an absolutely incredible teacher and my daughter still talks about her to this day like many of Ms. Karen's former students. I was absolutely stunned at the quality of instruction my daughter received at LCN. She quickly learned her alphabet and then learned to recite it backwards which I still can't do. Then she began to cite the Greek alphabet and I am a little ashamed but when she asked for help I had no idea what the next letter was. By the end of the year my daughter was beginning to read and she was beginning to solve math problems. I was so proud of my daughter and the staff at LCN and I would highly recommend them without hesitation.

Politics aside, like another reviewer, my daughter loves her school and is excited to go every day!…read moreNow in her third year, passing the standardized tests hasn't been an issue, nor does she feel any anxiety over them. Like in real life, she's learned to adapt and thrive with the current education model. JCE also has a much more well rounded curriculum, with resource classes such as art, music, computer, health, and PE - classes other schools in adjacent counties have cut out. With the caring teachers, bright environment, and an emphasis on family involvement, I wouldn't give this school anything less than 5 stars. Give the local school board and state and fed DoE a 1 star review if we're talking the politics of the current education system, don't take it out on this school.

The overwhelming goal is to maintain high test scores on standardized, computer administered tests…read morethat last about 2 hours and are administered to students about 4 x a year, beginning in Kindergarten. If a student fails the standardized testing in 3rd grade, even if that same student excels in all class work and class tests, failure on standardized testing dictates that student is a "mandatory hold back." I.e., the student will not be allowed to advance to 4th grade & will repeat the 3rd grade. Teachers' salaries are tied to students' performance on standardized testing. Too many resources are diverted into maintaining high standardized test scores but to what end? On 5/18/12 The Washington Post wrote "Florida's standardized testing program is being misused & has severely impacted student learning." So many resources are diverted into maintaining high standardized test scores, that there are woefully insufficient resources allocated to ensure School Administrators & Directors are trained in student safety programs such as SESIR & the District's own Code of Conduct. Clay & Duval Counties report SESIR incidents at a much higher rate than St. Johns County schools. I do not believe this is because there are fewer incidents in St. Johns County. I believe this is because such incidents are unreported based on my own recent experience with a JCE Administrator and Director, one of whom admitted she had no training in & therefore no awareness of the existence of SESIR; the other was aware she was a Mandatory Reporter but had no idea of the existence of SESIR. The safety of children should be of paramount concern and priority. Even if the test scores were not an invalid indicator of later success, what would it matter if schools are unaware & untrained in executing their duty to keep children safe?

We moved over last summer and this was my 7 year old daughters first year here. This is a great…read moreschool. The teacher is very Stern and serious. Not too sure if I cared for that my daughters last two teachers were very approachable and were more sociable and got the opportunity to know myself and my child a bit better. She's very closed off and honestly a bit odd but does educate my child. The teacher was very by the book and kept me informed of all activities in a timely fashion. However, not sure if is the school or the teacher but it seems her other school had parents more involved. My mother and I used to volunteer between two and five days a week I sign a form at the beginning of the year to come in very 2 weeks and do art history lessons to the class and I was never contacted. As well as I have offered several times to volunteer and was never contacted. I also wish there was more clarification on release of parent information. The teacher gave my info to the room mother someone I didn't know and she "accidentally" attached me to an email ad for some kind of diet pill she was selling! Told the teacher no apology from them but emails stopped. Recently I started receiving emails from another parent....that's frustrating!! Besides these quirks the school it self is very nice, clean, great staff. She's only in second grade so here's to 3 more years!!
