I did feel 100% safe the whole time though. The instructors were good about suiting us up with the ropes in the beginning, and they all were friendly, had great senses of humor, and were so patient in calming down us scaredy cats!! I think there were about 9 lines in total and the whole thing took about 2 hours? Maybe 3? They were all fun and unique! There were also opportunities to walk across rope bridges and rappel down. Loads of fun! I would definitely do this again.

It all started when she got on our bus to give us initial instructions...with an attitude "if your not in groups of four we will not let you in". "if you ask for coffee before dessert you will not get it" not jokingly advising us but just rude. There is a way to talk to people and get a point across without being rude. Once on the train the rudeness was worse even making an elderly member of our group tremble with anxiety. i didn't say anything because I thought I was just being touchy but as I've talked to others in our group I have found that everyone who encountered her had the same view of her rude attitude. NO WAY should she be serving customers. The rest of the staff were very nice. She should work at Dicks... a restaurant in the South where staff on purpose insult the customers .... We did ask about the cost: The guard told us that the road has been owned by the family for ~100-150 years or so. At some point in the early 1900s the government decided that Mt. Washington itself would become a National 'property' (I honestly cannot remember if it's a state park or national monument or what). But the government did allow the family to keep their road. It's the only way to the top. Driving up the 7-8 miles you can see the amount of maintenance required year-round, so there's where (I assume) a good chunk of your money goes. It was a fun and amazing drive. From hairpin turns to parts that were just gravel roads to fantastic views, it had everything. Beautiful scenery. Super fun getting stuck behind drivers who clearly had no idea that you could actually go faster than 5 mph. Ugh. You do get a 'This Car Has Gone Up Mt. Washington' bumper sticker. Fun. But this is worth it for the top. Even without hiking around, plan to spend at least a half hour, and maybe several hours, just walking around seeing the sights and reading about the history at the top. It's amazing. And highly worth the trek!! ***And on the way down PLEASE pay attention to all of the signs saying to put your vehicle in low gear to save your brakes. This is NOT rocket brain surgery and made it very easy for us to get back down while saving probably 1,000 miles on brake pads.

The road is very, very narrow and you must be very careful to take it slow, take breaks in the various turnouts (check out the amazing view!), drive in low gear, and go easy on your breaks coming down. Most of the road is well-maintained, but the edges of the road in some parts are pretty severely washed out. The gift shop at the top is nice but small and crowded. We also went to the small but informative museum - pay what you choose. No matter the weather at the base or the time of year, it's colder at the top than you think it will be, so BRING A SWEATER.
