I'd never had Pakistani food before, so had no clue what to expect. But I assumed it would be pretty similar to Indian food, with heaps of vegetarian options on the menu.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. This is a meat-heavy place, big time. They only have two vegetarian dishes: palak paneer (contains dairy) and dal mash (which I confirmed was vegan, so I ordered it. It's kinda like the Indian yellow lentil curry but the lentils themselves were different -- definitely smaller -- and the flavours were a bit different).
Also, the food here is CRAZY spicy. My boyfriend is not super-wild about spicy food so he requested the lowest level of spice on his dish (the lamb korma). But it was still way too spicy for him, to the point where he had to basically drown his food in the yoghurt sauce just to make it palatable.
As for me, I like spicy foods so I was fine -- but even I could tell it was crazy spicy. So yeah. If you don't like spicy, maybe give this place a miss.
Other than that, though, the flavours here are nice, and GEEZ the portion sizes are huge. The dishes are all in the $10-13 range and you get enough food to feed a small army. This place is really, really amazing value for money.
Service was hit and miss. Both Pakistani guys, one who was sullen and uncommunicative, and another who was super smiley and friendly and cheerful.
Atmosphere-wise, the place is odd, with super-bright lighting and harsh white walls with a few pieces of art (Arabic calligraphy, etc). The tables are a little rickety and oddly configured, and the place has a bit of vibe where you wonder how clean the kitchen REALLY is, but honestly for the price it's not bad at all.
Definitely worth a visit if you want to try Pakistani food and can handle your spicy. I just wish they had more vegan options (much less vegetarian options!) read more
