All of those things mixed together and twisted and pulled into a sweet singular strand of small town taffy. We bellied up to the bar later than we had hoped, in mid-afternoon. We met the current manager who explained the history of the spot, and while it's a little spotty, they've been around a long time in one form or another. She was related somehow to the original owner and it's passed through generations of families. There are strange gifts, new gifts, a lunch counter, booths, and a small menu board. We came in post-hike and got burgers because of course you get burgers. I can sum up the vibe of the food and the whole experience thusly: ME: "Wow, this tomato looks like it came from the garden." HER: "Ya, we get them from a guy who grows them for us. He's actually my old history teacher." Local, small, quirky, but very very delicious. Simple. I'm off shakes but by dining partner got one and it filled the cavity well. You have to stop in here when in Roosevelt. It's small town history teacher tomato good.

Nobody wants depressing donuts, but that's what I got here. Up early and headed to nearby Dinosaur National Park, we thought why not treat ourselves to a box of donuts. I like to support small local businesses, and Shane's fit the bill. Tucked away in a plain Jane strip mall with no fancy sign or surroundings, I figured their donuts would speak for themselves. Well, the sure did -- and not in a good way. We couldn't make up our minds and opted for a 6 pack so we could take a bite of each and have a variety. The donuts on display looked really tasty, and the store already had a few old timers having their daily breakfast sweet. You could tell they were regulars and locals, this isn't a touristy place. We picked three different flavors of glazed donuts, then three different filled donuts. The donuts were good and tasted fresh and soft, but the oil was old and needed to be changed. That's always strike one when you bite into a donut. The glazes were good but overly sweet, and the yeasty dough was light and fluffy. What a shame the old oil ruined the flavor. I'm docking them two stars for this. What brings Shane's Donuts down to the dreaded one star rating is that ALL THREE OF THE FILLED DONUTS were completely empty of filling! No cream or jelly in ANY of them. I was doubly disappointed because we paid extra for the specialty "filled" donuts, but none of them had filling inside. I guess somebody messed up, but the staff needs to pay more attention to quality control. I paid extra for AIR! See photos of my sad, empty donuts. Since we had a full day planned at the national park, I couldn't turn around and complain or get the items replaced. By the time we got back to town, they had closed for the day, and we left early the next morning. I would avoid Shane's Donuts, or at least take a bite of the filled ones before you leave the parking lot. I am super disappointed, and I won't be returning to Shane's when I visit Vernal again.

I asked for a sampler dozen of their best and was extremely pleased! Though they don't showcase many of their cake donuts, they were by far the better - in my opinion.
