The business is enormous, housed in a huge warehouse on Bayshore. I only wish it were double it's size, and that my home were double the square footage so I could buy more! Grand Central Station Antiques hits the sweet spot with quality and price. I can say without a doubt that you will not find a larger selection anywhere in the Bay Area at these prices. Robert, who's been running the business for decades, is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and always helpful in locating the perfect item for one's home. I have included pictures of some of my favorite and unusual finds. My friends all joke that I now present as a rich heiress, but the truth is, is that I spent comparatively little in furnishing my apartment with items I found at Grand Central Station Antiques. Purchasing antiques provides quality you just can't find in newly manufactured furniture, and honestly, one won't pay more (or much more) than their modern equivalencies. Antiques have soul, history, and create rich warmth and beauty for your home - priceless! The prices are always fair and the selection is like no other in the Bay Area. I have a particular interest in bookcases and shelves to house a growing book collection. At GCSA I've discovered a number of wonderful European 19th and 20th century classic items to display our collections, as well as beautiful oriental rugs, art pieces and practical household items. You won't be disappointed with the wide selection and the outstanding care which Robert and his team apply to their merchandise. I can also attest to the prompt delivery and exceptional attention given by the delivery team to delicate and heavy items. One extremely large (over 9 ft wide and nearly 12 ft high) walnut Victorian bookcase with glass doors had to be installed as a single piece. It was expertly handled and placed. You won't be disappointed. I've attached a few images of pieces found at GCSA that I treasure.

The building was a printing press back in the day, so it's a bit of a maze but that's part of the charm. I've discovered some amazing local businesses. I recently went to their February artisan food fairs, and bought some delicious food products. They had a variety of food vendors: hot sauces, honey, dips, cookies, teas, and more. As for the craft fairs, respect jewelry, candles, cutting boards, and even a few food vendors. That's where I discovered Apisol, a woman-owned company based in the Peninsula that makes delicious sparkling honey beverages. Don't miss the vintage store on the first floor, which has really unique vintage products like postcards, buttons, posters, and more. I never heard of this place until a fellow Yelper brought this up to me and I said SFBox? I never heard or been in this location before and I am sure most of you never heard of this place either unless you search for history of the William Randolph Hearst printing press building so many years ago. The building was built in 1926 as a printing plant for the San Francisco Examiner. It is a nice mixed use building like a nice cozy maze to explore the nice layout and architecture of the old print shop. So upstairs about 2 floors and vendors are scattered so it's like a hunt for them, almost like a needle in haystack. Lol Well it's not that hard as you won't miss anyone. Too floor that where you will satisfy your sweet tooth . Yummy. The vendors that were there were a nice mix from tea, cheese, spices, India coffee , Turkish spreads, ice cream, giant cookies, healthy drinks, spreads, and I am sure you will find something you will enjoy. I don't normally buy stuff, but the honey , red beet, 2004 sweet land Bingdao $95 brick tea that is aged 21 years that can make 175 tea servings for $95, Il Fiorello basalmic vinegar was thick and smooth great texture and syrupy taste very captivating and Taste of Levant tahini and their chocolate jar of molasses was excellent and I had to buy them. I was brought to Antique & Art Exchange by an interior designer, who said that they'd be the best…read moreresource for deciding whether the family furniture I'd inherited and paying to store is valuable, something that they'd be interested in reselling, or even worth my cost of storage. She was right! We met Howard Settle, who looked at my grainy photos of various furniture items and instantly knew about each. He told me the greater detail unavailable in the photos but that I'd have to know about each to determine what I really have to sell. Turns out that one item I suspected to be perhaps the least valuable, almost a throwaway, might be worth several thousand dollars (if it turns out to be what the photo suggested as a possibility). A chest I thought to have value...well, he suggested considering donating it to charity, as it's not valuable. This was an Antiques Roadshow-like experience! Go here for fine antiques and art pieces, not junky bric-a-brac typically sold in "antique stores." Just because something is old does not make it a fine specimen or valuable (applies to people, too). The items in this store are curated, and each is there due to its quality. Unfortunately, the items I have are not special enough to sell through them, but I learned a lot and Howard suggested places to contact. Key Points: 1) If you're considering buying newly made furniture, look here first (but not for cheap stuff or furniture for your kids to climb on). For instance, $10,000 for newly made furniture won't buy much in quality or quantity, and it'll be mass produced factory goods. You'd be surprised to see how far that money will go in a place like this, and everything here is high quality with "a story." And the value of this furniture won't plummet the day you buy it, either. 2) They sell directly to consumers and other dealers and designers. Selling to the latter group means that they're held to a higher standard, as the dealer and design communities wouldn't buy there if the merchandise weren't special or as represented.

I started searching online but couldn't find anything close to what I had in mind. Then I remembered the antique shop near my old apartment, the one run by such lovely people with an amazing eye for beautiful pieces. So I went there, hoping to get lucky. As soon as I walked in, I saw many lovely mirrors, but none that matched the one I'd been imagining. Just then, Howard asked if I was looking for something specific. I told him about the mirror I'd been dreaming of, and he smiled and said, "I just bought one like that." He showed me a photo on his phone, and it was the one. He told me it would arrive on Monday, but I was leaving town for work and worried I might lose my chance. Howard kindly promised to hold it for me until I returned. When I came back, I hoped he had kept his word, and he had. There it was, waiting for me: the gorgeous Victorian mirror I'd dreamed of all my life. Not only did he keep his promise, but he also gave me a generous discount, saying that the mirror was meant to be mine. They delivered it to my second-floor apartment with great care and professionalism. I absolutely love it and feel so grateful to Antique & Art Exchange SF for helping make a lifelong dream come true.

This takes me to "Community Thrift Store" that is located in the heart of the Mission District - San Francisco. Located directly on Valencia St. and adjacent to 17th St, this very popular thrift store has been serving its customers dating as far back as the mid-1980's. I came here on a whim as I just finished buying some baked goods at nearby Tartine Bakery (a must-try if you're in the area). Parking can be hit or miss but I would advise coming here by public transit (Bart/Muni), rideshare, or simply by bike or foot. The exterior part of the building is a distinctive hot pink color that gives it a strikingly bright charm. Once inside, you will notice just how much space is occupied as every square inch is utilized to its full potential. Usually when I shop at a thrift store, I walk out with at least a few items that are really cool finds. However, during this experience, I left empty-handed and walked out with the same amount of money I had when I came in. From what I noticed, many of the items (which includes clothing, kitchen items, and other knick-knacks) were quite pricey. For example, I saw a pair of Levi's jeans that looked GREAT; only problem is that they were asking $29. There was even a small stain as the jeans should've been less than $10. I even saw a very nice glass casserole baking dish w/lid but even at $25, I could find this same item at Target or even HomeGoods around the same price. I am not stingy but thrift items should not be costing an arm and a leg. I will say that their selection is quite extensive with a ton of men's/women's/children's clothes, purses, book, electronics, furniture, area rugs, music (vinyl records, CD's, cassette tapes), housewares, and other odds and ends that is sold here. But unless there is an item I really want, I don't think I will be making any future trips back here. Again, don't let this review deter you from shopping here. What someone else might find as a diamond in the rough might be classified as junk to others. What that said and done, I am giving "Community Thrift Store" just an average three star rating.
