I found Dr. Harrington when I was looking for a family doctor in West Seattle, mainly for my…read morehusband and my daughter who was due to be born. I had a long standing relationship with my doctor who was also near my place of work, so I didn't feel the need for a new doctor at the time. Five years later, Dr. Harrington is still my daughter's doctor, as well as my husband's and my infant son. We have experienced nothing but excellent service by everyone that works at his practice, and even more so from him. This also goes for his walk in urgent care which is an amazing and important service for our neighborhood. They have been so helpful to my mom when she was visiting from out of state to both my children when they were sick. My kids and husband love Dr Harrington and I respect him a great deal. I have been through some ok doctors at the polyclinic and while though they were extremely expensive, they also seemed extremely rushed and I never felt like they were really listening to me when I had issues. But not Dr. Harrington. One incident I will never forget was when I was pregnant with my 2nd child and the last month of my pregnancy I developed asthma (when the the wildfires occured). At the time every nurse and doctor I came across diagnosed it as allergies, acid reflux, a cold. I suffered through it, even having to sleep sitting up. The coughing was not as bad in the hospital when my my son was born. However, a day after I was released from the hospital I ended up going to the ER because it came back and felt worse than before (unfortunately Dr. H's urgent care was closed late that night). The ER doc said it was probably just a cough and hopefully it will subside. The next day we brought our newborn in to see Dr. Harrington and he noticed my coughing while he was checking my son. Even though I wasn't one of his patients he asked to check my breathing because he thought I had asthma. Well he was right and he immediately had his nurse set up a nebulizer (i think that's what it was) and also prescribed me medicine an inhaler and medicine. Within a day I was finally feeling better after a month of suffering. As I previously mentioned, most of the doctors I have dealt with in the past as a patient, and someone who works for a well known hospital in Seattle, Dr. Harrington and his practice has provided my family with better service than anyone else in the area has to offer. I hope he realizes what an impact he has made in this community.

He is kind, compassionate, caring, patient, and attentive. In sharp contrast to my experiences with my previous physician at one of the big clinics in Seattle, I never feel rushed when I see Dr. Harrington. For the first time in decades, I feel like I have a true partner who is committed to improving my health outcomes. It has been easy to schedule appointments with Dr. Harrington and he follows up with me after our visits. He also diagnosed a serious health issue that had been undiagnosed and untreated for years. If you are looking for a traditional family doctor, I highly recommend Dr. Harrington.

I do NOT hand five-star reviews out like candy. Someplace that gets everything right gets four…read more Five requires extraordinary effort. I've been seeing Dr. Couret at this clinic for about a year and a half and I have had exemplary care from the first day, when I dropped by in order to select a new doctor (having moved to the neighborhood recently). I asked one of the front desk receptionists which doctors best fit my criteria, and they quickly recommended two of them. I looked over their little autobiographical summaries, and asked if I might be able to interview Dr. Couret for about five minutes. I'd made the same request an hour earlier at another clinic, and was told "no, the doctor's very busy. You can make an appointment. We have an opening in about five weeks." But here, the answer was "He's pretty busy through the end of the day. Would it be okay if he called you at home tomorrow morning?" Well, sure! "Did you want to make an appointment?" I figured I'd probably better, if the interview went well. "We have a slot tomorrow morning." Woah! Really? How about the day after, so can at least talk to the doc first? No problem. By the time that was all taken care of, it was five p.m., and Dr. Couret popped out of the door ready to head home for the day, spotted me, said "Are you Dave?" and invited me back on the spot to ask him questions. Since then I've interacted with his assistant (always cheerful and polite, and quite good at giving shots with a minimum of ouch), the clinic phlebotomist (I hate having blood drawn, but she's remarkably good at getting the needle in and the blood out quickly and often painlessly), and various receptionists (who rarely leave me standing long before calling me forward, and if they're really busy, usually at least acknowledge that they've seen me). About half the time I'm coming in on short notice or unannounced. (I'm sick! Fix me now! I don't think I've ever had to wait more than a couple of days for an appointment, and about half the time, Dr. Couret squeezes me into his schedule that day (if I call, say, before 10am). I have seen other doctors a couple of times when "my" doctor wasn't available. They did not seem any less competent than my doc. The urgent care clinic used to be upstairs. Now it's folded in with the family practice downstairs, and probably will be transitioning more toward the related CityMD facility a block away. But, last year, when I showed up with a head wound, the urgent care crew ended up staying more than an hour after closing to make sure my head was stitched up and taken care of. There's a lot more I could say, about how one of Dr. Couret's diagnoses turned out to be literally life-changing for me, or how I learned about how the office environment is extraordinary in how non-discriminatory and supportive it is of all staff members regardless of gender, ethnicity, or other such categories, but this is already a crazy long review, so I won't. If you show up *anywhere* unannounced, your wait time is going to be mostly a matter of luck as to how many other crises showed up before you, and medical professional are still human; they will sometimes make mistakes. They've made a few minor ones with me. Nevertheless, I have found, overall, the quality of care here to be among the best I've ever had in my life, and if I were offered a job that meant I had to change health care providers, I would not accept it. They're that good. ------- A couple of comments on some of the previous reviews: "They prioritize basic doctor appointments over serious traumatic injuries." The 'basic doctor appointments' are a different pool of doctors than the urgent care ones; they just share a building. "[Receptionists should let walk-in patients] know there is an emergency in the back room which could take an hour to clear up. Give your clients the option to go elsewhere." How would they know? The doctors in back have time to come out and tell them? Shouldn't the doctors stay in back and keep working? And will the doctors even _know_ how long it will take? Maybe. Maybe not. And yet, another review complains that the walk-in clinic wouldn't let them wait when they showed up at 6, the clinic closes at 7, and there was an hour wait, thus *giving that client a chance to go elsewhere*! Nobody should get a 1-star review because they're *busy*.

I am a physician who has been referring patients to Dr. Karmali for seven or eight years (maybe…read moremore?) and after years of seeing her work (from the outside) and hearing patients tell me about her, I would say that Dr. Karmali is easily one of the best primary care doctors in town. Her best quality is that she really listens to patients. It's so often that patients come in presenting with one thing, but if you take a few moments to talk with them, you discover that is not the real issue at all. For example a patient coming in with elbow pain, where she finds out it's not just a presentation of elbow pain but really the patient is extremely stressed and clenching their arms at night, causing elbow pain. So the real problem is anxiety not elbow pain. Dr. Karmali actually takes the moments needed to find that out. My patients love her and I appreciate having a skilled physician to refer to when I want to have a MD on board. In a world of seven minute office visits, where you walk in, get a scrip for your "problem," and walk out, it's rare to find a MD who actually practices such caring and quality medicine. I truly can't recommend Dr. Karmali highly enough, Swedish is beyond lucky to have her!

She made me feel comfortable and relaxed every step of the way, talking me through everything. Dr. Karmali is extremely kind, attentive, gentle, humble, and calming. She went to UW Med School, so extra points for that! Another cool thing is that Swedish uses MyChart, an online personal health record system where you can see your medical history, appointments, messages from your doctor, etc. Strangely, when I called to make an appointment, the receptionist said that Dr. Karmali did not have any openings until January 2015. However, when I went online to MyChart, I saw multiple openings between now and the end of the year. I ended up making an online appointment with Dr. Karmali for early December and cancelling my phone-made appointment with another doctor at Swedish. I am so excited to go see Dr. Karmali again soon!

I had an appointment scheduled for 3:15 PM, made a week and a half in advance, already delaying care for a medical concern because that was the soonest available time. When I arrived, I was told the provider was out sick. I was informed that "we called you," but I never received any message. Even if I had, the issue remains -- I still needed to be seen. When I asked what my options were, the only response was essentially "the provider is sick." No alternatives, no backup plan, no advice, no option to wait and be seen by another provider. When I asked when I could be seen, I was told the next available appointment wasn't until September 19th -- another full week of waiting. So, everyone who had an appointment that day was simply pushed out another week, as if our health concerns did not matter. This felt disrespectful and dismissive, as though my appointment and my medical needs were unimportant. A clinic should have a backup plan for patients when a provider is unexpectedly unavailable. Sadly, this experience showed a lack of preparation and care for patient needs.
